Skilling Youth for both Employability and Entrepreneurship

Skilling Youth for both Employability and Entrepreneurship

New Delhi, July 15, 2022: World Youth Skills Day emphasizes the need to equip the youth with skills that make them employable, able to deliver stellar work, and become job creators. As the world revives from the pandemic, World Youth Skills Day 2022 is a chance to assess the need for skill development in a world undergoing remarkable socio-economic and technological changes.

The pandemic might have disrupted the pace of skill development and there might be considerable ground to be covered to upskill youth in preparing them for a better tomorrow. The job sector and various industries have undergone a major transformation during the pandemic and the demand for enhanced skills has only grown.

India has the largest youth population in the world with an average age of 29. Nearly 40 percent of the Indian population is aged 13 to 35 years. The youth (18-29 years) form 22 per cent of country’s population, totaling more than 270 million in number.

The Prime Minister has rightly reiterated that India would lead the fourth industrial revolution, supplying high-quality workforce to the whole world. Skilling youth properly, across urban and rural India, will be the key to actualizing this vision and ensuring a strong, future-ready workforce for India.

India’s demographic dividend opportunity is the longest in the world, available over five decades, from 2005 to 2055. India has the potential to emerge as one of the largest consumer economies in the world too, thanks to emerging economic dynamics and favourable demographics.

The young and working population brings many unique possibilities for India’s future too. They include social mobility, economic growth, and a more inclusive and equitable society.

“Both employability and entrepreneurship are the keys in enabling today’s youth to take the nation into the future.  I feel convergence of endeavour among all the important players will play a significant role in the path of nation building,” says Mr. Santanu Mishra, Co-founder, and Executive Director, Smile Foundation.

Smile Foundation has been one of the leading organizations working in the areas of skilling and upskilling youth across India.

Smile Foundation’s documentaries “Manayun” and “Torch” compete in the Audience Choice category at the Durban International Film Festival

Smile Foundation’s documentaries “Manayun” and “Torch” compete in Audience Choice category at the Durban International Film Festival

The two films, shot at Smile Foundation’s projects, capture real-life journeys of two inspiring youth from rural Odisha

New Delhi, Aug, 2022: Two films made by Smile Foundation got a world premiere at the 43rd Durban International Film Festival (DIFF). The films are among the top 12 films selected globally under the Audience Choice category of the Nelson Mandela Film Festival, partnering with DIFF this year.

‘Manayun’ and ‘Torch’ are both documentaries shot at Smile Foundation’s education projects in Odisha and capture the real-life coming of age journeys of two ordinary but inspiring young men.

Manayun – My Wonderland showcases the journey of a young migrant who travels in search of livelihood. His struggle makes him realize the importance of education and he returns to his native village to open a school. His homeland happens to be the picturesque, naturally endowed district of Kalahandi.

The other film, Torch, captures the life of a teenager growing up in a village near Konark, home to the Sun Temple. Soumya suffers from a condition in his legs that prevents him from leading a normal life, pushing him into depression. His interest in life is rekindled by a torch light.

Both the films have been made by Smile Foundation, known besides its development work, for making the iconic children’s film I Am Kalam in 2010. The organization has carried forward the legacy by making several documentaries, films, television series and a children’s film festival called SIFFCY that has been running for eight years now and is known for its curation of handpicked films for children and youth from across the world.

Santanu Mishra, Co-founder of Smile Foundation and producer of Manayun and Torch, says, “We want to take the work, the stories and the inspiration from what we practice on the ground to a larger audience. Ever since I am Kalam, we have come to believe in the power of films as a tool to reach and sensitise the masses. These films are a step forward in vocalizing challenges that are faced at the grassroots, and exemplify how ordinary people can bring change in their lives, their communities.”

Mr Pranab Aich, Director of the two films, says “I have been making documentaries with NGOs for 15 years now. I am fond of telling stories through children as they are our future, and their perspective on life has mostly been ignored in the mainstream. Smile has been doing excellent work with children. Getting to make films on such stories is a challenge and joy as well. Manayun was shot in very difficult terrain.

Smile Films is an initiative of Smile Foundation, an Indian social development organization, benefitting over 15 lakh children and their families every year. Smile Foundation believes that unless members of civil society are involved proactively in the process of development, sustainable change will not happen.

Smile Foundation believes cinema is one of the most influential and creative tools that can promote positivity and aims to empower and educate society about societal problems and about the way to resolve these through good cinema. Smile Foundation has been deploying good cinema as a medium for sensitizing the masses and engaging them proactively in the process of initiating social change. Smile Foundation wants to involve civil society, to take an active partner in all its welfare initiatives.

Smile Foundation awarded for Skill Development of Youth

Smile Foundation awarded for Skill Development of Youth

New Delhi, Dec 12, 2022: Smile Foundation receives the CSR Times Award 2022 for Skill Development. Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment, Km. Pratima Bhoumik presented the award in the presence of eminent dignitaries.

The award conferred under Gold category was in recognition to the foundation’s Smile Twin e-Learning Programme or STeP. Smile Foundation conceptualized and launched the Programme in 2007, with an aim to create a pool of skilled and gainfully employed youth through skill enhancement in tandem with market requirements across India.

Smile Twin e-Learning Programme (STeP) is further aligned with the ‘Skill India’ initiative that was launched by the Government of India in 2015. STeP aims to empower the underprivileged youth of our country by providing them with knowledge and the requisite skills, thereby increasing their career opportunities and enabling them to secure jobs in the organized sector, become financially secure.

“We are thankful for such a meaningful encouragement. Looking at the emerging and growing opportunities for the youth, we are preparing ourselves for a significant expansion of this programme,” says Mr. Santanu Mishra, Co-founder & Executive Trustee, Smile Foundation.

This national level programme develops and trains youth with necessary skills, ensures beyond-classroom learning, helps them on career choice and counseling, facilitates exposure visits and interaction with prospective employers, and provides them with job placements.

Initially, the skill development programme was a primarily focused on providing market-oriented skill training to underprivileged youth for gainful employment in retail, hospitality and ITeS sectors. As the pandemic brought major disruption in many industries, it also triggered emergence of new jobs that demanded specific skills. As a result, Smile Foundation restructured the STeP curriculum to fit the emerging employment market. Efforts have been made to facilitate skilling and employment of youth in sectors such as healthcare assistance, digital marketing, BFSI (business, financial services and insurance), BPO (business process outsourcing) and e-logistics where the demand for workforce is rising rapidly.

Currently, 84 STeP centres are operational across India. Out of the 75,000 students that have been trained so far, 47,000 have been placed in over 200 brands successfully. Others chose to pursue higher learning and explore more opportunities with their new-found skills and confidence. Girls constitute 61 per cent of the overall beneficiaries.

Improving the Lives of the Underserved In Bangalore

Improving the Lives of the Underserved In Bangalore

Over the last two decades, Bangalore has witnessed rapid industrialisation resulting in improved infrastructure and booming technology sector. The growth has created vast wealth for many, but it has also exposed India’s IT capital to migration of people from different parts of Karnataka and other states resulting in increase in the number of slums as well in the city. According to reports, more than 2 million people of Bangalore, who constitute a quarter of its total population of 8.4 million, live in slums primarily due to their poor socio-economic conditions. Most of these slum residents are engaged in construction work or informal labour to make the ends meet.

Reportedly, the city has at least 600 slums and several other unaccounted squatter settlements. The inhuman conditions in these areas deny its residents their right to basic amenities, such as drinking water, sanitation, drainage system, toilets and garbage disposal. Unhygienic conditions, clubbed with overcrowding and poor ventilation, have made these slums a breeding ground for preventable and vector borne diseases like tuberculosis, diabetes, malaria and dengue. Lack of health-seeking behaviour and limited access to health facilities further makes it challenging for vulnerable communities, especially pregnant women and children, to lead a healthy life.

INTERVENTION

At Smile Foundation, we understand and believe that early detection and treatment can curb the spread of a disease and lead the underprivileged sections of the society towards healthy living. Hence, we have joined hands with Philips to bring primary healthcare services to over 10 slums in Bangalore including BK Nagar, Kempapura, Amruthahalli, Kodugehalli and Dasarahalli under the unique Smile on Wheels (SoW) programme. The primary aim of this intervention is to attend to the health of men, women and children residing in these slums, and provide a wide range of preventive, promotive and curative healthcare services at their doorstep.

To serve the purpose, a self-contained Mobile Hospital Unit is dispensed in the target areas with a team of medical experts and community mobilizers. The medical van has all the necessary lab equipment and other facilities to provide medical consultation, diagnosis and lab testing services to the beneficiaries along with free distribution of medicines. Street plays, health talks and other IEC activities are conducted to sensitise slum dwellers on the essence of nutrition and general hygiene. Pregnant women, being the ‘high-risk’ group, are given special counselling antenatal and postnatal care, immunization, breastfeeding and family planning. Referral services are also provided to connect the underserved communities with the government.

Project Highlights

  • The project will benefit at least 35,000 beneficiaries from 10 slum clusters in Bangalore, every year.

  • Regular OPDs are conducted every month to offer medical consultation, diagnosis, lab testing, and medicine distribution services.

  • Many IEC activities and school health programmes are organised on topics like Personal Hygiene, Nutrition and Family Planning to encourage health-seeking behaviour in men, women and children.

  • Awareness sessions are conducted to educate women on pregnancy and newborn care related issues like ANC/PNC, immunization and breastfeeding.

  • Referral services provided to patients in need of institutional care.

IMPACT

A total 76 OPDS organized

Total number of female beneficiaries was 1732

75 pathological tests were conducted so far.

A total of 2862 people benefited from the health care services provided

Education bringing joy to tribal families of Andhra Pradesh

Education bringing joy to tribal families of Andhra Pradesh

This project works for child development, health and tribal welfare of Ramnagar village in Andhra Pradesh. The target groups are the children of 3 to 18 year age group from poor tribal families of the catchment area of the project as well as from other tribal areas of Palavancha mandal of Khammam District.

Due to many reasons, including social taboo, inaccessibility, violent situations, child labour, assisting the parents to take care of toddlers and lack of awareness among the parents, the children of the village do not get a chance to go to school. The project aims to promote primary education of the poor tribal children.

In addition to this, the project strives to improve the quality of formal education for children in the tribal belts of Palavancha. Promoting health and healthy practices among the rural tribal children is also a part of the project.

Smile Foundation has partnered with Society for Integrated Rural Improvement (SIRI) for implementation of this Mission Education project.

Generating employment for slum dwellers of Jogeshwari

Generating employment for slum dwellers of Jogeshwari

This project aims towards the upliftment of the socio-economically backward population in the slums of Jogeshwari by providing them training for formal employment. Its main focus is to empower the underprivileged living in this slum, particularly women and girls, by inculcating the requisite skills in them and generating employment opportunities.

With a large percentage of the destitute population being settled in Mumbai, slum colonies have become an integral part of the city. Jogeshwari, which is home to more than 4 lakh people, ranks as the third largest slum area in the metropolitan.

This project is designed to motivate these deprived people and provide them a fair chance at white-collar jobs through formal training in soft skills, basic management and sales, computers and English proficiency.

The project also ensures their overall personality development through counseling sessions. Industry visits, live interactions with experts from different professional sectors and placement assistance further helps them choose their own career and work towards a better, brighter and more dignified future.

Smile Foundation has partnered with Society for Human & Environmental Development (SHED) for implementing this STeP project.
