Meaningful Cinema Festival SIFFCY to stage over 150 films from across the globe

Meaningful Cinema Festival SIFFCY to stage over 150 films from across the globe

New Delhi, April 14, 2023:  Children and youth are the future of any nation. If they are sensitive then they can be the best change agent and show right direction to their family or community. However, due to the kind of messages that are inundated in the media today, many teens today are vulnerable to harmful addictions, loneliness, insecurity, violence and aggression. That’s why there is a need to fill the youth with a right consciousness and energy. For this, Smile International Film Festival in its ninth chapter has brought meaningful cinema from across the globe. Whose aim is to inspire the youth and bring positive change in the society. In this chapter, apart from films, many filmmakers, artists and influential people from all over the world will discuss the change in society by putting their perspective in front of the youth.

The week-long SIFFCY (film festival) is entering its ninth edition from April 17 this year. In this, more than 150 films from more than 50 countries will be staged. The week-long festival will be celebrated on three days at Sirifort where more than 30,000 youth will participate while meaningful films will be shown to more than 100,000 children in various schools across the country on the remaining days. These films have been made on topics like climate change, road safety and children’s cinema and have been awarded many awards.

“We believe that meaningful cinema is a powerful medium to bring about genuine change in the society by portraying reality. Good films have the power to encourage discussion and reflection among the youth. This process makes them better and capable of personal, emotional, social and moral duties. Through this film festival, we aim to attract their attention and make them reflective towards the society. The aim of these films is to create a good impact on the society,” says Mr. Shantanu Mishra, President and Executive Trustee, SIFFCY and Co-Founder, Smile Foundation.

This year the film festival will also host the prestigious European Children’s Film Federation Awards and the prestigious CIFEJ Awards. Smile Foundation is the only Indian organization to host these awards. Apart from this, SIFFCY is also hosting the much talked about Film Critics Circle of India Awards. A Czech animation film will also be screened at the festival in collaboration with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in New Delhi. In addition, 10 selected films made by young filmmakers from the Tomasz Bata University in Zlín will also be screened during the film festival. Renowned filmmaker from Japan, Mr. Nijitaro will impart skills to the children through an animation workshop.

The festival is also showing the best of European cinema with the delegation of the European Union. Also young Indians will be able to watch 10 selected films from Germany due to the collaboration with Schlingel International Film Festival, Germany. “This edition of Siffsy will feature dozens of workshops, panel discussions and film experts to encourage the youth to think critically. So that they can express themselves creatively. Through this platform, we also want to provide young, aspiring and independent filmmakers an opportunity to showcase their talent at an international level,” says Mr. Jitendra Mishra, Director, SIFFY Festival.

Smile Foundation believes that every filmmaker or storyteller has a unique way of working. It is also an important responsibility of films to inculcate a sense of contemplation among the youth through films. Good films inculcate in the youth invaluable human emotions like helping others, empathy and sense of responsibility. Smile Foundation has successfully worked on many short films, documentaries, TV series. The feature film ‘I Am Kalam’ has created a worldwide buzz by winning more than 30 awards, apart from the National Award.

Prominent directors, actors, writers, cinematographers and production stalwarts including Hansal Mehta, Jhanu Baruah, Santosh Sivan, Nagesh Kukunoor, Resul Pookutty, Tigmanshu Dhulia, and Utpal Borpujari have been supporting this platform by standing by SIFFCY.

India Today-RPG Group happiness awards | Champions of cheer

India Today-RPG Group happiness awards | Champions of cheer

(April 10, 2023)

This year, as the quest entered its second season, it was pegged around three tentpoles. First, in January, India Today magazine came out with a special issue—‘The Secret of Happiness’—that featured inspirational, heartwarming and emotive insights from seers, celebrities and do-gooders on the many paths to bliss and how to find them. The next month saw the first-ever India Today-RPG Group Happiness at Workplace Summit and Awards that, based on a comprehensive survey, recognised companies for creating employee-friendly spaces and policies.

The grand finale came with the Happiness Fest and Awards. The evening kicked off with a performance by The Suryansh Project, a band of young musicians known for their Indian classical, Sufi and indie pop compositions. It was followed by celebrity chef-author Ranveer Brar recounting his culinary journey and sharing his ‘recipe’ for happiness. As comic legend Johny Lever took the stage with actor Kunal Kemmu, his co-star in the Disney+ Hotstar comedy series Pop Kaun?, the hall was bound to reverberate with laughter. Breaking into spontaneous comic acts and elaborating on his process (“observe everyone and everything”), the veteran said that good comedy boils down to “good writing”.

Fresh off the success of her Netflix heist thriller Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga, actor Yami Gautam spoke about how her happiness comes from spending time with family, which includes husband Aditya Dhar’s and her mutual love for “nature and finding peace in the mountains”. Her one piece of advice to the audience—“Never take work back home” if you want to be happy. Stand-up comedian Abish Mathew next got the laughs going with his observational humour.

The highlight of the evening was the India Today-RPG Happiness Awards. To shortlist the categories and nominees, India Today had engaged the research agency MDRA. It researched each nominee’s contribution thoroughly and conducted a perception survey across a dozen cities to shortlist five names under each of the categories. Jury members Aroon Purie, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief, India Today Group; Harsh Goenka, Chairman, RPG Group; Anant Goenka, Vice-Chairman, RPG Group; and Raj Chengappa, Group Editorial Director (Publishing), India Today Group, presented the trophies to the winners for bringing happiness and giving hope to people in these trying times.

The illustrious list included Alia Bhatt, who was awarded for the ‘Most Inspiring Performance of the Year’ in the movie Gangubai Kathiawadi, Ashish Chanchlani for being the ‘Funniest YouTuber of the Year’, and Abhishek Banerjee for the ‘Funniest Film Performance of the Year’ in Bhediya. The Viral Fever team followed up its last year’s win (for Kota Factory) with yet another for making the ‘Most Inspirational OTT Series’—Panchayat 2. India Women’s Cricket Captain Harmanpreet Kaur was adjudged the ‘Most Inspiring Sportsperson of the Year’ and Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev the ‘Most Positive Influencer’. Goa was the ‘Happiest State’ and Smile Foundation the ‘NGO that Brought the Most Happiness’. And then there were two Special Jury Awards for the India Women’s Hockey Team and actor Rishab Shetty (see Why They Won).

The evening concluded with the ‘desi’ rock and roll group Faridkot bringing the audience to their feet with a setlist that included Amar Jalal singing their chartbuster ‘Nasha’ twice on special demand. There were smiles all around and a spring in everyone’s step after the group’s hour-long vibrant act—bringing to an end the Happiness Fest that surely lived up to its name.
