The buzzword for 2023 is artificial intelligence (AI). From corporate press conferences to media houses and even casual group discussions, AI creeps in everywhere. It has been around for years, but the conversation got serious after Microsoft-backed OpenAI released ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot.

Innovative and ground-breaking, the tool holds incredible value for all industries and individuals, with many touting it as one of humanity’s great inventions. ChatGPT and other Large Language Models (LLMs) deserve such recognition as they’re fantastic tools that enhance human capability and efficiency and bring change to society.

The latter is more valuable from a universal viewpoint, as, despite incredible evolution and transformation, problems exist worldwide. Take gender equality. The 21st century is littered with unfair gender bias examples, with women unable to perform and contribute the way men can.

It’s a bigger problem in India, where traditional customs and traditions further alienate women and draw a clear distinction between things men and women can do. Artificial intelligence offers hope. Being a machine, it sees people as individuals, not men and women. AI can help break barriers, challenge biases, and pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable world.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Change

The growing prominence of artificial intelligence gives hope that gender equality can be addressed. AI systems are unbiased, relying on data-driven algorithms rather than societal prejudices.

By removing human intervention and relying on objective data, AI can help reduce gender disparities and ensure fair treatment. Below are a few areas we think artificial intelligence can profoundly impact and support the cause of gender equality.

Recruitment

Recruitment has been plagued by gender biases for decades in the corporate world. Men are preferred in certain roles, especially those requiring programming and tech skills. Despite their skills and experience, women are often overlooked in such roles.

AI-powered systems can solve this problem and revolutionize the recruitment processes by analyzing resumes and applications without preconceived notions. By focusing on skills and skills alone, AI algorithms can identify candidates best suited for the job. This can help overcome unconscious biases, promoting a more diverse and gender-balanced workforce.

Pay

Men are paid more than women. It is an open secret, yet no one wants to address it. Women are paid less than men in multiple roles across industries, but artificial intelligence can solve this.

AI can assist in eliminating this by providing tools for monitoring and fair performance analysis. AI-powered analytics can assess salary data and link it to employee performance metrics, helping companies identify if women are paid less than men for the same role and performance.

AI can further assess promotion rates to identify patterns of gender discrimination. Organizations can use these data points to take proactive steps to rectify pay disparity and create a more inclusive work environment.

Education

Gender inequality begins at home and in schools. Girls are devoured with the same learning and extra-curricular opportunities as boys. The problem stems from there to various aspects of society, amplifying gender inequality.

Combining artificial intelligence with gender equality is an excellent solution, as AI can find ways to provide equal access to learning opportunities, thus solving gender biases. AI-enabled platforms also have broader benefits, as they can make education more accessible, affordable, and personalized.

Virtual tutors and adaptive learning systems powered by AI can cater to individual learning needs, helping girls, as well as boys, overcome educational disadvantages.

Social Issues

Gender-based violence has been a massive problem in India. Until a few years ago, media houses reported violence and harassment against women, with many even losing their lives.

This is another area where artificial intelligence can affect human life. AI can play a critical role in combating gender-based violence and harassment due to its amazing data analysis abilities. Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms can analyze data from social media platforms to detect harassment, hate speech, and gender-based violence.

This can enable intervention and quick action to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable. AI can also assist in identifying patterns and predicting potential hotspots for violence, allowing the police to allocate resources strategically and prevent incidents before they occur.

Healthcare

Healthcare is one of the most important areas where artificial intelligence can impact human life and help support the cause of gender equality. AI is already revolutionizing the diagnosis and treatment of diseases by accounting for gender-specific factors.

It is an underrated feature as, historically, medical research has focused primarily on male subjects, leading to gaps in understanding diseases and their effects on women. AI-powered systems can analyze chunks of medical data, considering gender a critical variable.

This can help identify gender-specific symptoms, risk factors, and treatment approaches, leading to accurate diagnoses and personalized healthcare for women.

Closing Thoughts

Artificial intelligence in education, healthcare, recruitment, and corporate life can address the issue of gender inequality faster. However, caution is equally necessary as AI tools also possess threats.

Tech companies must focus on avoiding bias in AI algorithm training. LLM models are essentially trained by humans, who, unlike machines, have gender biases. If the training data is biased or limited, AI systems may inadvertently reinforce gender stereotypes and discrimination.

Therefore, it is essential to ensure diverse and representative training data and implement rigorous testing and auditing processes to minimize bias.

World Health Organization’s (WHO) data points to India having a high maternal mortality rate of 174 deaths per 100,000 live births, significantly higher than many other countries in the South Asian region. Around 50 million women in India suffer from reproductive health problems. Additionally, Anaemia affects around 50% of women of reproductive age in India, complicating pregnancy and childbirth.

Malnutrition and food insecurity also disproportionately affect marginalized women in India. Nonprofits are tackling these issuez by implementing healthcare and nutrition initiatives that aim to improve the health and well-being of marginalized women and their families.

Focus on providing regular health checkups, and nutritious meals, educating women on balanced diets, and promoting sustainable farming practices take center stage in these initiatives that are implemented after surveys and deep research into the problems faced by marginalized women in India.

Nonprofits collaborate with local communities to establish kitchen gardens and agricultural initiatives, empowering women to grow their own nutritious food and ensuring long-term food security. Additionally, they conduct workshops on nutrition education, emphasizing the importance of balanced low-cost, high-nutrition diets and healthy eating habits.

Moreover, these initiatives often integrate skill development training, teaching women about food processing, preservation, and value-addition techniques. By addressing menstrual hygiene, nutrition, and entrepreneurship, Swabhiman provides a holistic approach to women empowerment. The programme empowers women by promoting menstrual hygiene awareness, ensuring access to hygienic products, improving nutrition and food security, and equipping women with skills, and organising financial literacy workshops to live with dignity and autonomy.

Recognizing the significance of this phase, the Indian government has been committed to providing comprehensive early childhood care and education through the establishment of anganwadis. These centers, integral to the Poshan Abhiyaan (National Nutrition Mission) and the Padhai Bhi, Poshan Bhi (Education and Nutrition) initiative, play a crucial role in nurturing India’s young population.

Anganwadis serve as vital hubs of support and intervention, catering to children aged 0-6 years and their families. These centers aim to provide a nurturing environment that promotes early learning, health, nutrition, and overall development. Under the Poshan Abhiyaan, anganwadis focus on addressing malnutrition and improving maternal and child health outcomes, while the Padhai Bhi, Poshan Bhi initiative aims to integrate early childhood care with preschool education.

According to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, there are approximately 14 lakh operational anganwadi centers across India. These centers provide a range of services, including immunization, health check-ups, nutrition supplementation, preschool education, and parental counseling.

Through the coordinated efforts of Anganwadi workers, supervisors, and community participation, these centers contribute significantly to enhancing early childhood development outcomes. By providing age-appropriate learning opportunities, nutritious meals, and health interventions, anganwadis lay the groundwork for a strong educational foundation, improved health, and overall well-being of children.

Poshan Abhiyaan 2023: Transforming Early Childhood Care and Nutrition

Poshan Abhiyaan, also known as the National Nutrition Mission, is a visionary initiative by the Indian government to uplift the nutritional status of children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers across the country. Launched in 2018, Poshan Abhiyaan is a comprehensive program implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, with the aim of addressing malnutrition and promoting early childhood care and education in India.

The primary objectives of Poshan Abhiyaan 2023 are to reduce stunting in children under the age of 5 by 2% annually, decrease anemia in women and adolescent girls by 3% each year, increase exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life to 65%, and raise the proportion of children aged 6-59 months consuming a minimum acceptable diet to 75%.

To achieve these goals, Poshan Abhiyaan incorporates a wide range of interventions, placing particular emphasis on improving the quality of food provided at Anganwadi centers, the cornerstone of early childhood care in India. These centers serve as crucial platforms for delivering nutrition education and counseling to mothers and caregivers, screening for malnutrition and anemia, and promoting breastfeeding. Poshan Abhiyaan also emphasizes the importance of sanitation and hygiene to ensure overall child well-being.

Since its inception, Poshan Abhiyaan has made notable progress. The prevalence of stunting in children under 5 years of age decreased from 38.4% in 2015-16 to 36.4% in 2018-19. However, challenges persist, with high rates of anemia among women and adolescent girls and suboptimal exclusive breastfeeding rates.

More Progress

As part of the Poshan Abhiyaan 2023, Poshan Pakhwada will be observed, a dedicated fortnight to intensify efforts towards improving nutrition. This period will witness extensive awareness campaigns, community mobilization, nutritional assessments, education, and counseling. Screening for malnutrition and anemia will be carried out, accompanied by the provision of iron and folic acid supplements. The promotion of breastfeeding and the importance of sanitation and hygiene will also be emphasized.

Poshan Abhiyaan is a long-term commitment, and while progress has been made, sustained efforts are required to fully address malnutrition and enhance early childhood care and education. By actively participating in Poshan Pakhwada 2023, every citizen has the opportunity to contribute to building a healthier nation and nurturing the future generations of India.

Future of Early Childhood Education in India

As we delve deeper into the lives of those impacted through affirmative actions undertaken by many of our individual and corporate partners, we hope that the insights provided here find a way into the hearts and minds of our readers. 

Let’s unearth the soul and substance of one of our livelihood programme, STeP hero, Aman Shukla (19-year-old) trained at STeP’s centre located at Sangam Vihar, Delhi supported by Smile Foundation. 

Q. So Aman, tell us about yourself. Who are there in your family? How did you find your way into this training centre?

I have a small family of 4 members. My papa, my maa, didi and me. Papa works as a BSES Supervisor with a monthly salary of 12,000 INR. Maa takes care of us and the whole family and Didi is pursuing a B.Ed. degree with a clear resolution of turning into a government-school teacher someday. 

I am pursuing B.Com. (Honours) degree from the University of Delhi-School of Open Learning and since I wanted to help Papa with the family expenses, I got myself enrolled in the Retail Management Training course at the Sangam Vihar centre of STeP after one of my friends told me about it. Now I am placed with Whirlpool as a Sales Representative earning 14,000 INR every month.

Q. How did your training help with your current job? What has your experience been like till now in your job?

I think more than anything, what one needs to do well at a job is having the confidence in self to learn and absorb different things. The training was tailor-made in such a manner that the learners fully understood promoting and selling products and services while increasing customer satisfaction and brand loyalty. But our trainers also focused on the importance of soft skills and being able to confidently and composedly answer our customers’ queries. 

My work environment is very friendly and supportive. My on-the-job training has taught me a great deal of knowledge about refrigerators and air conditioners. Since the washing machine and microwave’s workings are a little more complex, I am still in the learning process about those types of equipment. Sometimes, I feel like I am not learning fast enough but my manager looks happy about my speed and retention abilities, so I guess I am doing well in my work.

Q. That’s great Aman. It seems like you are working smart and hard at your job. You are making more money than your father now, has that changed the family dynamics?

Whatever I am is because of my papa. He is honestly the most inspirational person in my life. He never forced me to do anything and he has also taught me how less money doesn’t always mean less happiness. In all our years, even with limited money, he has brought us all the joy in the world. 

So I might be making more money than him now but that will never change what he and I share emotionally. He is my biggest cheerleader and it won’t change even when I start earning 40,000 INR tomorrow.

Q. How about your ‘me’ time? What do you do on your free days?

I work 6 days a week so I don’t have a lot of time for myself but on Sundays, I make it a point to hear the songs of rapper Emiway Bantai. His songs are so relatable and inspire me to do better in life. When I enter into the world of rap songs, my mind automatically feels relaxed and it fills me up with energy and passion. 

Q. Yes, music is really one of the best ways to export the self into another world. So do you see yourself in this job for a long time? 

For a few years, yes! My ultimate goal is to serve the nation by being a part of the BSF (Border Security Force) Army and I have already appeared in the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) GD Examination once but failed it by a few points. But I am going to clear the examination with flying colors the next time around, take my word on this!

Many of my family members are in the army. Their lives and their stories inspire me to serve the nation and its people. After all, nothing is more courageous than saving innocent lives.

Q. That is indeed a beautiful dream. Any piece of advise that you would like to share with your peers?

It’s essential to collect knowledge from every area of your life and apply it practically. Since I am young, I try to be curious and eager to learn as many things as possible. So, my suggestion is to be hungry for knowledge.

Also, always believe in something bigger than human lives. Have faith in yourself and let the magic happen to you.

The soul and substance of Aman lie in his passion to serve the nation and love his family without many conditions. We wish him well and hope that his dream to become a part of the defense services comes true someday soon.

A Strong Step Towards Freedom

The future of India lies in its youth. With our working age demographic increasing every year, it is imperative that the youth are trained and upskilled for them to become a part of the Indian workforce and contribute to the growth of the country. 

Smile Foundation’s livelihood programme, STeP (Smile Twin e-Learning Programme) understanding the modern needs of the Indian youth is upskilling the youth of underserved communities in six-course modules, namely– Retail Management, Healthcare (General Duty Assistance), Core Employability, Digital Marketing, BFSI (Banking, Financial Services and Insurance) and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO). The programme has trained 75000 youth with 47000 of them placed with 400 employment partners.

Here is the story of Madhu Verma, centre coordinator of Smile Foundation’s Mission Education(ME) programme,  located at Shri Ram J.J.Colony, Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi in her own words.

1. Madhu, you have been an inspiration for the women of your community, Could you tell us about your journey at the education center? How did you join the programme?

Fifteen years ago, I joined this centre as a teacher. It was a turn of events that led me to this incredible opportunity. A dear friend of mine informed me about the programme, and as luck would have it, the education center was conveniently located close to my house. At that time, I had just graduated from Delhi University and was contemplating my next steps.

I initially joined the center for a temporary period of two months, unaware of the profound impact it would have on my life. Little did I know that my encounter with these children and the noble cause behind the education programme would ignite a deep passion within me. The more time I spent with the children, the more I realized the transformative power of education in their lives. 

2. What challenges did you encounter while working in this urban village setting, and how did you overcome them?

When I joined the community, there was a lack of awareness about the importance of education, and parents were not sending their children to school. I took it upon myself to spread awareness and disseminate information about the benefits of education to each household in the community, which consisted of over 500 families.

I went door-to-door and engaged with parents, explaining the value of education and addressing their concerns and doubts. Initially, it was difficult to gain their trust but I worked tirelessly to build relationships and establish a sense of partnership with the parents, emphasizing the long-term benefits that education could bring to their children’s lives. And the next 15 years went by like a flash and I am still nowhere done with this place.

3. Since you have been a part of this cause for over 15 years, your roles and responsibilities have certainly evolved. Could you tell us more about your professional journey?

Since 2007, I have been actively involved in the overall development of the community, one of my key responsibilities in the early years was to survey the community and assess the educational needs and challenges. I have taught a diverse group of 100 students at the education center. Alongside my community outreach efforts, I also played a significant role in counseling both parents and children.

I recognized the importance of addressing the emotional and social aspects that impacted a child’s ability to learn. I have also collaborated with other teachers and staff to develop curriculum plans, monitor student progress, and organize extracurricular activities. It has been a fulfilling journey, and I am dedicated to continuing my efforts in making a positive impact in the lives of these children and their families.

4. How has Smile Foundation helped you in your journey?

Under the guidance of some incredible mentors from Smile Foundation, I have learned that understanding the family background of a child is crucial to understand the challenges they may be facing. Now, I have made it a point to meet the families of our students, follow up on their progress, and spend time getting to know them. This has allowed me to gain deeper insights into the issues affecting the children and provide appropriate support.

Another valuable aspect of the ME programme is the provision of quarterly teacher training sessions. These trainings focus on various topics including child psychology, equipping us with the knowledge and skills to better understand and address the behavioral and emotional needs of our students. One session, in particular, taught us how to engage students in learning through fun and playful activities, making the learning process more enjoyable and effective.

5. That sounds great, is there any particular incident that made you realize the importance of these training sessions?

Yes, I once noticed a girl who exhibited withdrawn behavior, constant fatigue, and an inability to complete her homework. As I had learned from the training sessions, I decided to follow up with her family.

It was then that I discovered she was burdened with excessive responsibilities both at home and in her academic pursuits. I advised her family to reduce her tuition load and prioritize giving her time for herself. Since implementing this change, I have witnessed a remarkable transformation in her. She has started making friends, and her academic performance has also improved.

6. Your journey is commendable, we would like to know what keeps you going? What is your motivation to come here every day?

Oh, my children are my motivation (laughs with joy). The achievements of my students, Aakash and Vikas, fill me with immense pride and joy. I taught them for 12 years and it’s amazing to see them grow. Aakash now owns his own tuition center and Vikas is an animation artist. I remember the days when Vikas would come to class with his sketchbook, brimming with creativity.

Then there are Nisha and Amit whom I taught for nearly 10 years, and they have recently secured jobs in prestigious positions. Nisha landed a job at the UK Embassy, and Amit joined the Swiss Embassy. Knowing that I played a part in shaping their educational journeys and witnessing them achieve such remarkable milestones fills my heart with an indescribable sense of fulfillment and moments like these make every challenge, every late-night preparation, and every ounce of effort worth it.

7. Great! We got to know a lot about your professional life, are you comfortable sharing something about your family? What has been their role in your journey?

Yes, ofcourse. Though my husband and I don’t have children of our own, this education center has filled that void in my life. It has become my extended family, and the children I work with have become a source of immense joy and fulfillment. My family, including my husband and in-laws, take immense pride in the work I do.

They understand the impact it has on the lives of these children and the community as a whole. It’s truly heartwarming to come back home after a long day at the center and share stories with my family. Their understanding and appreciation for the work I do make me feel truly blessed.

8. Thank you for sharing your journey, Is there anything else you would like to share or future goals and aspirations in terms of this centre.

Looking ahead, one of my dreams is to have a bigger space that can accommodate more students. Currently, we have 100 students, but my heart aches when I have to say “No” to parents who come to me, desperately seeking admission for their children. It’s a tough decision to make and therefore by expanding our center to accommodate 200 students, we can make a small difference and give more children the opportunity to receive the education they deserve.

I also aspire to establish a separate counseling section within the center. Recognizing the importance of addressing the emotional and psychological needs of our students, I believe that having a dedicated space for counseling will greatly benefit them.

If someone stays back at a place for more than 15 years, they most probably have built something of great value and importance to them. As Madhu looks forward to impacting many more lives in the future, we would like to take a long moment to salute her spirit and her commitment to affecting positive changes in the lives of JJ Colony’s children and their families.

Sonu Sharma: A 21-year-old Making Things Work for Him

When Sonu is asked why money is important to him, he replies rather quickly, as if the answer is permanently stuck at the back of his throat. “I want us to live rent-free. Most of my friends who are from rich households have their own houses. All 5 of my family members share a one-room apartment. I want a room of my own by 2024. I want to experience the joy of privacy.”, says a very strong-willed Sonu.

Sonu Sharma, a 21-year-old young man, who lives in sector-31, Noida, Delhi NCR likes wearing white sneakers and talks fast eating up his own words at times. It seems he wants to share his side of the story without missing out on anything important.

Training Courses and Placement of Sonu

After doing Core Employability and Digital Marketing training courses from the centre at Noida of Niveda Foundation (one of the implementing partners of Smile Foundation’s livelihood programme, Smile Twin e-Learning Programme, STeP), Sonu got placed as a graphic designer with Key Solutions, Noida– a Corporate Design & Print House with a monthly income of 12,000 INR. To supplement his income, he freelances with other organisations that add anywhere between 4000-6000 INR to his monthly income.

Sonu knew poverty but experienced it quite closely when his father got unwell and he had to take up odd jobs including that of a waiter at a cafe for a few months in 2019. Without letting the embarrassment of a job profile that is looked down upon in India take over his sensibilities, Sonu did what he had to do for the survival of his family and himself.

When asked about his friends, Sonu says, “All my friends are from high-class families. They all have their own cars and do not think twice before spending any money.” Sonu’s answer opened up the questions of class differences and aspirations. “I don’t exactly know how I became a part of that group but it feels more natural for me to be a part of that world.”, shares a highly ambitious Sonu who rightly doesn’t want to water down his dreams.

Sonu is a big fan of social media influencer Rohit Zinjurke who creates lip-syncing and dance videos with a massive following of 25.9 Million followers on Instagram alone. The relatability factor runs high in the veins of Sonu who knows that Rohit Zinjurke came from difficult circumstances in life like himself. Signs of regret are visible on Sonu’s face who didn’t pursue music wholeheartedly and in his own words, “wasted some precious time” unlike his idol.

But Sonu is a realist too. He has plans to take a course in video editing to pursue a career in content creation in the near future. For now, he seems content to contribute towards the family expenses and save money for the downpayment of a home of his own.
