National NGOs look at leveraging domestic fundraising and innovation for sustainability

National NGOs look at leveraging domestic fundraising and innovation for sustainability

With international funding slowing and domestic fundraising taking off strongly, local NGOs have to up their game to win hearts, minds and donations from local companies. A five-day workshop by Smile Foundation in association with Wilde Ganzen’s Change the Game Academy in Chennai seeks to help organizations crack the local fundraising.

Chennai, November 26, 2019: With its commitment to work towards ‘Civic Driven Change’, Smile Foundation has teamed up with Wilde Ganzen’s Change the Game Academy to bring in best practices and help grassroots organizations take forward their development mandate. Through a unique classroom learning course, NGOs get to hear from experts on how to tackle fundraising issues and comply with the processes of due diligence from stakeholders to avoid abrupt shut downs.

This is particularly important in today’s context as over the past decade or so dependence on foreign funding for national NGOs has been erratic and is on a slowdown. As per a recent report, there has been a decline of 40 percent in foreign funds for NGOs over the past five years. This coupled with global economic slowdown and emergence of corporate social responsibility and individual giving, local organizations are looking for new ways to raise resources and support for the causes they champion within the national markets.

Only recently, around 1800 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in India have been banned by the government from accepting foreign funds for allegedly violating norms of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). “In our experience of over 16 years in the sector, we have realized that most of the times, the smaller organizations lack the basic know how of dealing with funds,” said Santanu Mishra, co-founder and trustee, Smile Foundation.

“Sometimes they don’t know how to raise resources, and many a times when they have funds, they don’t know the compliance processes. Foreign funds are shrinking due to valid reasons –corporates are more systematic in how they want to invest, NGOs by and large lack the skills and the attitude to complement the policies of Government in place by either improving or setting them anew,” he said.

“Self-Sustainability is a big question for these smaller NGOs. Change the Game Academy (CtGA) addresses these issues through its Classroom Course approach by focusing on the aspect of local fundraising. The course brings forth a paradigm shift to the participants that local fundraising is a more sustainable option in the long run and they leave the room equipped with skill-set, ready with an event plan to fundraise,” said Gargi Kapoor, In-charge, CtGA, India.

“These workshops help civil society to rethink their business models, think strategically about its financial models and adopt new and innovative approaches that will help the sector maintain its independence and still be sustainable. The idea exchanges that happen through the workshops empower these smaller units with long term and short-term fundraising goals,” she explained.

There is a growing trend in donations by individual philanthropists. They have ensured that the role of private funding continues to grow despite slowing foreign fund inflows. Similarly, funding under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is maturing, which has seen a growth of 12 percent in recent times, but local NGO’s need to explore ways to also find alternate means of fundraising.

The answer for smaller NGOs is on finding financial stability, which is basically about diversifying financial resources to have a healthy mix of long and short-term funding, CSR donations, foreign and local donors as well as internally generated resources by events, fundraisers, etc.

With most organizations that are working at the state level and rooted in the community, the understandingof financial stability is poor and lack of mentoring makes is difficult to sustain with changing scenarios. Change the Game Academy (CtGA) through its classroom course program aims to empower smaller nongovernment organizations in methods to become self-reliant and sustainable, and help them understand the dynamics of being self-sufficient and self-reliant.

Smile Foundation: Spreading cheers on Women’s Day

Smile Foundation: Spreading cheers on Women’s Day

(09 March 2009)

National level development organisation, Smile Foundation, recently organised a campaign ‘Main Kathputli hoon’ to celebrate International Women’s Day. The campaign was aimed at spreading awareness about HIV/AIDS and women empowerment
SMILE FOUNDATION celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8, with a campaign titled ‘Main Ek Katputli Hoon’ – meaning ‘I am just a puppet’. The campaign started with a multi-theme puppet show at Dilli Haat conducted by girls, who are community leaders from various underprivileged areas of Delhi. The puppet show was aimed at communicating the life of girl child from ‘Womb to Tomb’ and disseminating positive message on HIV/AIDS and against eve teasing to the privileged masses to commemorate the International Women’s Day 2009.

In Focus

Smile Foundation, through this ancient art of storytelling, attempted to portray life of the girl child in our society. The show was performed by community health workers and volunteers under the Swabhiman programme of Smile Foundation. Swabhiman programme stands for self respect and dignity of the girl child and woman across various sections of the society.

Chief Guest on the occasion, Pamela Philipose, Director, Women’s Feature Service and coveted journalist on women and development issues said, “Smile Foundation has adopted a very new way of highlighting the declining sex ratio in our country, the concern that is one of the most serious challenges facing India today.”

Audience was enthralled, as the community health workers performed the puppet show with male counterparts’ together standing up for the rights of the girl child and women. Complemented with music and folklores, the puppet show supplemented the theme of United Nations International Women’s Day 2009, ‘Women and men united to end violence against women and girls’. Realising the need of girl child education and promote women empowerment, Swabhiman programme of Smile Foundation enhances the skills and information relevant to make girls and women realise their self esteem.

A woman is expected to care her family from her young age to death; with marriage she plays dual roles, lives prejudiced life, falls prey to man’s lust but dedicate herself to family and in-laws. A woman symbolises giving, sacrifice, tolerance and all feminine virtues still facing cradle to grave discrimination.

Speaking at the event, Naresh Chaudhary, Chief Operating Officer, Smile Foundation, said, “Smile Foundation stands by half of the Indian population that still in 21st century is struggling to live with pride and dignity. Through International Women’s Day, we reiterate our firm belief in women power and strongly feel that we shall strive hard to achieve the status of a developed community unless we respect them at par.”

Puppets have been used for teaching everything from stories of medieval kings to HIV/AIDS and in the digital age too such art forms have not lost its relevance as an expression to mobilise the society. Smile Foundation through its Swabhiman programme enables girls and women to realise their inner potential in every sphere-be it home, workplace or community. Swabhiman, is successfully working in 10 urban slums in Delhi and has created a line of leaders to spread the message of women self respect and empowerment.

‘Kathputli or Puppet’, is what the girl child lands up being, as she plays different roles in life. From womb to tomb, the girl child is nothing more than a puppet in the hands of one or the other. The first expression that a child learns is, ‘Maa’ but as she grows up with self identity, the respect for the gender gets in oblivion. Smile Foundation aims to sensitise privileged citizens to educate, heal, empower and honour the so called ‘fairer sex’ through a puppet show, as the most beautiful and entertaining expression of art to symbolise the varied facets of women.

Main Ek Katputli Hoon

She lives or dies in womb, is something that society decides.
She gives up education because her family needs to live.
She marries early because her family wants to rid off the burden.
She serves herself the last because her family needs to eat.
She bears child because she is supposed to grow the family tree.
She nurtures family because she is an inspiration for sacrifice.

Swabhiman (self-respect) is a programme from Smile Foundation, which endeavours to empower adolescent girls and women, with focus on the underprivileged sections, by generating awareness, imparting self defence techniques, inculcating a health seeking behaviour and providing specialised mobile health care for girls and women. ‘CSR spend to rise; greater sensitisation needed’

‘CSR spend to rise; greater sensitisation needed’

(Nov 23, 2015)

NEW DELHI: Corporates can allocate Rs 20,000 -25,000 crore for their social responsibility initiatives, but there is a need for greater sensitisation for the companies to give back to the society, says non-profit organisation Smile Foundation.

“As the CSR spending is still not completely mandatory for the corporate yet, we expect a surge in the coming years when companies start witnessing the changes that start taking place at the grassroot levels,” Smile Foundation Co-Founder Santanu Mishra said.

On the number of corporates who have mandated Smile Foundation for their CSR activities this year, Mishra said “… in total, be it a big or small support, around 100 corporates supported us last year alone, including Ericsson India, Canara HSBC OBC Life Insurance and Indigo.”

Mishra believes it makes business and economic sense for the organisations to form partnership and achieve the joint agenda of social development in an area of their choice.

“Such partnerships can play a complementary and supplementary role with the government mission of contributing towards social development in a much bigger way. In coming years, this trend is only going to grow stronger owing to a variety of reasons,” he added.

He noted that “there is also a need for greater sensitisation for the companies to give back to the society and building positive and sustainable social changes that can also have business dividends.”

Under the new companies law, certain class of profitable entities are required to shell out at least 2 per cent of their three-year annual average net profit towards the CSR activities. The first year of implementation was financial year (April 2014-March 2015) and compliance reports would be available by the end of this year.

The workshop will provide a platform to the adolescent girl scholars to learn useful life-skills, exchange their experiences, ideas, aspirations with experts and resource persons as well as a working session as a part of the workshop to enable the participants to build their road maps towards their journey of self-reliance.

As part of its efforts to equip them to face the challenges and complexities of modern times, Smile Foundation, under its Swabhiman programme, imparts practical skills and information to these young scholars, enabling them to explore their potentials and established a positive self-image and develop better career perspective.

The workshop is conducted under the guidance of subject experts, trainers. It gave the students a platform to meet the real life role models from various fields- women entrepreneur, teacher, doctor, lawyer, journalist, woman police officer etc.

The workshops during this camp empowered these young girls through various activities such as Yoga, Self-exploration session, abhivyakti: effective communication through Media and theatre workshop, Self-defence and first- aid, career counseling session, planning a common future and meeting the real life heroes.

The program aimed at –

(a) Encouraging young girls to share the issues which affect their lives and enable them to understand their potentials and make relevant choices for themselves
(b) Providing them a strong Leadership orientation so as to enable young girls to put their best abilities for achieving their life goals as per their interests and aptitude
(c) Providing them access to information and opportunities available

Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Santanu Mishra, Co-founder & Executive Trustee, Smile Foundation said “In India, the girl child are usually deprived of their basic rights and education. Through this workshop we want to empower and inspire the younger girls to develop a road map for the future and make them self-aware, confident, take full charge of their own development and become a role model for thousand others.”

Smile Foundation, through its Scholarship programme has initiated efforts for the attitudinal shift of marginalized communities towards the girls’ education. The support is for school and college level girls. Most of the scholars strongly agree that due to Smile’s support they are motivated to achieve desirable education. Their families are also encouraged to continue the education of girl children further. They appreciate changes in the scholars in terms of their confidence, personality and information level.
