Riding to pave the road for children’s education

Riding to pave the road for children’s education

Seven Islands H.O.G. rides for Smile Foundation to send children to school

Mumbai : Smile Foundation in association with Seven Islands H.O.G (Harley Owners Group) organized a Harley ride today to support the cause of children’s education. Termed ‘Miles for Smiles’, the initiative sought to highlight the plight of millions of children forced in child labour and to spread awareness about importance of education amongst the most deserving children.

The event was flagged off from Bandra, Mumbai, around 6:00 am. Around 50 Harley owners from the Seven Islands H.O.G. extended their support by riding 100kms. to Lonavala during this event. The entire journey focused on sensitizing the privileged mass about the importance of education for the less privileged children and appealing everyone to do their bit by helping send one child to school. Proceeds from the ride will benefit the children under Mission Education, a national level programme of Smile Foundation.

Ameya Kapnadak, the Assistant Director of the Seven Islands H.O.G. Chapter said, “It is quite ironic, actually. A couple of days from now, the world celebrates the International Labor Day as a turning point in worker rights. And here in India, we see rampant child labor – right from maids in our homes to farm and factory workers. So we said let’s do our bit to put these kids where they belong – in schools.”

“Education is the most effective tool that can help the less privileged children come out of the vicious cycle of poverty and suffering, and transform into an empowered next generation. By involving the privileged section of the society proactively in the process of child development, we aim to bring some real and permanent change in the lives of the most deserving children,” said Mr. Vikram Singh Verma, Chief Operating Officer, Smile Foundation, echoing the thought.

Jagdeep “JD” Singh Bhatia, the Activities Officer for the Seven Islands H.O.G. Chapter and a moving force behind the initiative added, “It is amazing what the Harley community can do when they come together. This idea really just came up over a cup of coffee, and look what it’s grown into! Just goes to prove that when our passion for riding is clubbed with a social message we can move mountains.”

The Hogs (as they’re affectionately called the world over) managed to raise over Rs. 5 Lakhs from this effort.

About Harley Owners Group

Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) is the official riding club of Harley-Davidson and has over a million members across the world. The community was created in 1983 and has numerous chapters across the world. HOG Chapters are volunteer organizations that organize riding and other activities for the members.

Pankaj Advani celebrates International Day for Girl Child with Smile Foundation

Pankaj Advani celebrates International Day for Girl Child with Smile Foundation

Bangalore : 10-time World Billiards and Snooker Champion Pankaj Advani celebrated International Day for the Girl Child with Smile Foundation at the Karnataka State Billiards Association. Pankaj Advani has been awarded with the Arjuna Award in 2004, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2006 and the Padma Shri in 2009. With an aim to raise awareness about educating the girl child, the champion also pledged his support towards Smile Foundation’s relief and rehabilitation efforts in the Kashmir valley to help out children who are the worst hit.

In September, when the combined fury of heavy rains and flooding rivers affected more than 2 million people in Jammu and Kashmir, Smile Foundation quickly mobilized emergency aid and reached the state, with special focus on children and their families. Today, even after a month of the disaster, the affected people are facing food shortages and water contamination, along with increased risk of water borne and vector borne diseases. The winter in Kashmir is always harsh due to heavy snowfall and children will be the most vulnerable in such a situation. Hence there will be an urgent need of warm clothes, blankets, medicines and medical help besides stocks of ration.

Smile Foundation is continuing its intensive relief operation that includes relief camps and health camps for the affected villages in Jammu and Kashmir namely Udhampur, Reasi, Rajouri in Jammu and Bandipore, Srinagar, Budgam, Pulwama, Anantnag in Kashmir region till the end of the month. After that ground work for the rehabilitation programme will commence.

Supporting the cause, 10-time World Billiards and Snooker Champion Pankaj Advani said “Women play a very important role in our society, in our lives. It is my grandmother’s birthday today. I was very close to her and have learnt a lot from her. On this special day, I would like to stand up for the cause of education of girl children. These young girls will be women tomorrow, mothers and unless they are educated, the future generations cannot be empowered. Smile Foundation has been doing really good work for the girl child. They are also reaching out to the girl children in Jammu & Kashmir, who have been affected by the floods. I am supporting their initiative and request all of you to join me.”

Commenting on this occasion Mr. Vikram Singh Verma, COO Smile Foundation, said, “Jammu and Kashmir has never witnessed such a nature’s fury before. Numerous villages have been devastated. Children, being the most vulnerable, have been affected the most – separated from their families, traumatized and in want of food, shelter and warmth. Our efforts in the Kashmir valley are focused on children and their families. I would like to thank Mr. Pankaj Advani for coming forward in support of the girl children affected in the floods on the occasion of International Girl Child Day.”

From Philanthropic Act to Strategic Policy Enabling and empowering grassroots NGOs

From Philanthropic Act to Strategic Policy Enabling and empowering grassroots NGOs

Bangalore : Smile Foundation, a national level development organization, held a three day workshop in the city through their one-of-a-kind initiative “Empowering Grassroots” – Capacity Building of Community Based Organizations, which received a tremendous response from national and international grassroots NGOs. The aim of this initiative was to enable and equip community based organizations to achieve sustainability by aligning themselves with the CSR mandate under the Companies Acts 2013 and the growing middle class in India with high net worth individuals, in the wake of foreign institutional funding slowing down.

The programme witnessed global participation from industry experts, grassroots NGO’s and observers. It aimed to facilitate grassroots NGOs by educating them in building their capacities to mobilize resources for the sustainability of their projects, programmes and organizations without dependency on international aid. The outcome of this workshop was that community based organizations were instilled with the need to achieve sustainability through credible delivery, whilst at the same time they were exposed to various tools that they could used to scale up their management, operational and governance bandwidth to establish credibility transparency and accountability so as to facilitate resource mobilization and thus achieve sustainability.

In partnership with Wilde Ganzen, Netherlands, and taking learning from India and similar economies in the world, such as Brazil, Kenya and South Africa, Smile Foundation has built capacities of 500 grassroots NGOs in last two years under ‘Empowering Grassroots’ programme.

Speaking at the press conference, Mr Vikram Singh, Chief Operating Officer Smile Foundation said, “Whilst the ripple effect of the global financial crises of 2008 is now being felt in the NGO sector with the slowdown in foreign funding, there are new opportunities for resource mobilization under the Company’s Act 2013 and the growing middle-class with high net worth individuals. As Smile Foundation acknowledges the noble work being done by community based organizations at the grassroots level to bridge the gap in addressing social issues, we are committed to hand-hold them in building their capacities so as to help them achieve sustainability of their projects and their organizations by instilling in them the need for credible delivery and effective resource mobilization”

Mr. Robert Wiggers, Deputy Director Wilde Ganzen said,” Change the Game is an innovative program for supporting CBOs and NGOs in low and middle-income countries by strengthening their organization, learning how to mobilize local funds and resources, and enlarging their capacity to relate to local and national governments in order to promote service delivery. Robust organizations place the responsibility for combating poverty much more where it ultimately belongs, namely with governments, business communities and members of the middle class in emerging economies. Change the Game combines a series of workshops, learning events and coaching, digital learning modules and courses with a portal that presents 1,001 examples of good practices, information on relevant legislation and regulation and a series of practical tools and formats. The program starts this year in India and Kenya”

Smile Foundation is partnered with Wilde Ganzen which supports such programmes in four emerging economies of the world and is currently working with its National partners in other countries in expanding it to more than 2000 NGOs worldwide.

Child Education begins with a Skilful and Passionate Teacher

Child Education begins with a Skilful and Passionate Teacher

Smile Foundation, a national level development organisation, is conducting an innovative series of Teachers’ Training and Capacity Building programmes across India. Education of children, when they are the first generation learners, depends solely on the levels of training and passion of the teachers. It helps the children stay in the education centres, increase their learning, prepares them to get mainstreamed in reputed schools and also helps the children to cope with the teaching methodologies prevalent there.

Each of the three-day training programmes is residential in nature and has been scheduled for all four regions of India. The modules include Pedagogical Skills, Library Management and Computer Teaching.

The first programme for North India was held in New Delhi which included 37 teachers and instructors from 23 grassroots NGOs from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Chandigarh & Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi NCR.

The training programme for West India was held in Mumbai which included teachers from 23 NGOs from Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa.

The training programme for South India and East India are being held simultaneously between 10th and 12th of March, 2014 in Hyderabad and Kolkata, respectively.

“Quality of learning for the small children, who could be first generation learners, begins with a passionate and skilful teacher who creates interest in the classroom. If we expect a child to learn effectively, our teachers have to create that interest and excitement. This effort of ours complements the Right to Education (RTE) Act where Smile Foundation would like to see 20,000 children to be mainstreamed in reputed schools and help them build a bright future,” says Mr. Vikram Singh Verma, Chief Operating Officer, Smile Foundation. He adds, “Teaching should be creative, engaging and effective especially for the underprivileged children. When teachers apply simple yet right methodologies such as story-telling, use of colourful library cards etc. for better use of the libraries, it creates interest amongst the children in studies and enhances their learning.”

Wilde Ganzen, the Dutch international development agency, is supporting Smile Foundation in conducting this first series of teachers’ training and capacity building programme which has been designed to take advantage of the Right to Education (RTE) Act.
