Smile Foundation is a national level development organisation reaching out to more than 600,000 underprivileged children, youth and women directly every year through more than 250 welfare projects on subjects such as education, healthcare, youth employability, and women empowerment across 25 states of India. Adopting a life cycle approach of development, Smile Foundation focuses its interventions on children, their families and the community.
As part of its effort to equip the girl child to face the challenges and complexities of modern times, Smile Foundation, under its Swabhiman programme has organised a day long learning workshop at Mumbai University for 40 scholar girls from marginalized background to help them explore themselves holistically and shape their own life.
To make these girls self-aware, confident and make relevant choices in life; interactive and self-exploration workshops were conducted to empower them with various life skills. The workshop also laid emphasis on financial literacy and adolescent reproductive and sexual health awareness among girls. They were helped by experts from various fields to develop their personality, interpersonal relationships and studies. Girls were also educated about various career avenues and job opportunities available for them.
Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Santanu Mishra, Co-founder & Executive Trustee, Smile Foundation said, “In India, the girl child is usually deprived of basic rights and education which is evident from the high drop-out rates. This workshop is a platform through which Smile foundation wants to continue the conversation, helping girl children realize their real potential and defeat the societal norms. Through this initiative we aim to empower and inspire the younger girls to develop a road map for the future and make them self-aware, confident, take full charge of their own development and become role models for their peers.â€
Smile Foundation’s Swabhiman scholarship programme helps academically bright girls, studying in schools and colleges continue their education several. It aims at imparting practical skills and information to these young scholars, enabling them to explore their potentials and establish a positive self-image and develop better career perspective. The team also engages with the parents/ guardians of the girl children to support an attitudinal shift in their mind-set. Such efforts also help is bringing down the high drop-out rates among girls which is quite high during school to higher education lift.
Such a programme is expected to bring about change in the overall personality of the girls in terms of confidence-building; strengthened ability to manage studies efficiently; effective communication skills and independence to take personal and professional decisions in life. These forty girls are force multipliers who will create impact in the society, inspiring many more in their respective communities.

The fourth edition of Smile International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFFCY) will commence with actress Priyanka Chopra-produced Sikkimese movie “Pahuna – The Little Visitors “.
Backed by Priyanka and her mother Madhu Chopra’s banner Purple Pebble Pictures, “Pahuna…” will be screened at the festival on December 10.
The film narrates the story of three Nepalese children separated from their parents and their journey back home. Directed by Paakhi A. Tyrewala , “Pahuna…” has won two awards at the SCHLINGEL International Film Festival for Children and Young Audience in Germany.
Santanu Mishra, Executive Trustee of Smile Foundation and Chairman, SIFFCY, said in a statement: “The cast has done amazing work in the movie ‘Pahuna’. With such impactful and unique films at the film festival, we look forward to enlighten the youth about issues that are influencing our general audience.”
SIFFCY 2018 will focus on German cinema to bring global exposure to the audience and will also organise film making workshops, panel discussions with an objective to engage, educate and empower our children and youth.

Ahead of the fourth edition of Smile International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFFCY), the Smile Foundation NGO has collaborated with the European Childrens Film Association (ECFA) and the Student Academy Awards to add a new dimension to the festival.
In collaboration with ECFA, SIFFCY has introduced ECFA Award category at its 2018 edition. The Award was launched in 2011 and was first presented during the International Film festival Berlin – Berlinale.
Also, with SIFFCY being a member of ECFA now, it has got the voting rights to nominate a film for ‘Best European Children’s Film of the Year’.
Lawrence David Foldes, a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the United States and a member of the Executive Committee of the Student Academy Award will be present at the film festival to represent the Student Academy Awards here.
Foldes will also mentor SIFFCY’s children in various workshops and the selected students will get an opportunity to be present for the upcoming Oscars.
Excited about EFCA’s association with SIFFCY, Felix Vanginderhuysen, General Secretary, ECFA said in a statement: “It’s the first time but very important because SIFFCY is the only festival outside Europe that participates in this award; therefore we hope that it will be the start of a long tradition.”
The festival will also present films which will talk about social issues like gender equality and education. And more than 150 award-winning films from all over the world will be screened in six different categories — International Competition, Yellow Carpet, 70MM Smile, Next Gen, Take One and Country Focus.

Smile International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFFCY) is a celebration of exuberant childhood, youthful energy, positivity and progressive change. SIFFCY 2018 will once again celebrate meaningful and socially relevant cinema in its fourth edition that is scheduled to be held from 10th – 16th Dec’18 at Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi.
The objective of Smile Foundation’s annual film festival is to use cinema as a catalyst, acquainting the young with meaningful cinema, creating conversations around topical issues and allowing the exchange of ideas and perspectives around the same.
More than 150 films from over 30 countries will be showcased which includes 9 feature films & 16 short films in the international competition section and others are in other different non-competitive sections, of Feature, Shorts and documentaries, & films made by children. Few of the most notables ones that are part of this bouquet are, Oscar nominated The Breadwinner Directed by Nora Twomey, Kenya’s Official entry to Oscar this year Supa Modo by Likarion Wainaina Cross My Heart by Luc Picard (Canadian Screen Award Winner), and Multiple award winning Indian film Chuskit by Priya Ramasubban among others.
