Volunteerism: Be The Change

Law of nature is such that it has not provided us all with equal means. We are all born in different situations with different abilities and that is the reason the world is so diverse, having said that, we are all entitled to equal treatment and opportunities. Regardless of race, age, gender, religion, beliefs, culture and disability everyone must be treated fairly and respectfully, have rights and equal status in society in order to reach their full potential.

Man is a social animal, we cannot live in isolation. It is very important that we get involved and engage ourselves with the community . In the course of life irrespective of our position, each one of us faces upheavals and we as human beings have the capacity to bring about a change, everyone can in some way or the other give back to the fraternity. Volunteerism, civic participation, outreach and service are the driving force for making a positive impact and transformation in our community and society at large.

There are a lot of people who are in distress but very few are willing to lend a helping hand. As fellow travellers on planet earth we must show solidarity and give them support and extend our kindness if we are the privileged ones. As a matter of fact everyone needs inspiration sometimes in their lives. The entire world is a varied fabric of human beings and we all have the potential to enact change and improve the lives of fellow human beings.

Volunteering will equip us in promoting a more just and prosperous society. One of the biggest tool for bringing equilibrium in our society is the sharing of self. This opens up the door of understanding, compassion, education, and empathy. Even the smallest bit of support and contribution can make a huge difference to the lives of people, animals, and organisations in need. Hence providing support can actually be an overwhelming, humbling and exhilarating life changing experience.

The present day lifestyle has resulted in rising stress levels all across the globe. This results in negative effects on our well being – mentally, physically and emotionally. At a personal level volunteering helps curb stress, anger, and anxiety. When one gets involved and try to bring  about a change, the entire process has an extremely profound effect on the overall psychological well-being. It gives the volunteer a new meaning and direction to their life. Community service provides a purpose and a natural sense of identity and accomplishment which in true sense is the essence of life.

There is a popular Chinese proverb that says: “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”

Smile Foundation believes that unless members of the civil society are involved proactively in the process of development, sustainable change will not happen. We encourage and invite volunteers to be an active part of our organization and share the same vision and purpose as us – to work for the welfare of children and their families. Volunteers are the backbone of every organization – they not only carry the organization’s ideals within them, but also spread the message far and beyond, sensitizing the society towards the cause.
