Some journeys stay with you long after the camera is packed away.
Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to the rural districts of Jamui and Begusarai in Bihar to document the stories of school-going girls receiving scholarship support through Smile Foundation. What began as another assignment soon transformed into an unforgettable experience—one that reminded me why storytelling has the power to inspire change.
Our journey began in Delhi. Along with my colleague Ritika , I boarded an early morning flight to Deoghar in Jharkhand, the nearest airport to our destinations. But landing there was only the beginning. Ahead of us lay nearly 150 kilometres of winding, uneven roads cutting through villages, fields, and small towns. The drive was long and exhausting, with every bump on the road reminding us how distant these communities are from the conveniences of urban life.
By the time we reached our hotel, it was late at night. Fatigue had taken over, and after a simple meal, we called it a day, knowing that the real journey would begin with the first light of dawn.
The next morning, as the sun slowly painted the countryside in warm hues, we set out with the dedicated team from Smile Foundation. Their familiarity with the villages and the families helped us navigate not just the roads but also the lives of the young girls we had come to meet.
As documentary filmmakers, we often arrive with cameras and equipment, but the most meaningful stories reveal themselves only when people begin to trust you. Each home we entered had its own rhythm, its own struggles, and its own aspirations.
One after another, we met girls who had dared to dream beyond the boundaries often imposed by circumstance. Some wanted to become teachers, believing education could transform not only their own lives but also those of future generations. Others dreamt of becoming doctors, engineers, civil servants, or professionals who could support their families and uplift their communities.
Despite limited resources, these young girls carried an extraordinary sense of determination. Their eyes reflected confidence. Their conversations revealed clarity of purpose. Their smiles carried quiet resilience.
The scholarship they received was more than financial assistance—it was reassurance. It was a message that someone believed in their potential. For many families facing economic hardship, this support meant that education would not have to be sacrificed because of financial constraints.
As we documented their daily lives, we witnessed mornings filled with household responsibilities before school, long walks to classrooms, hours of dedicated study, and evenings spent helping their families. Yet, nowhere did we find self-pity. Instead, we found hope.
There were moments when the camera simply became an observer. A father speaking proudly about his daughter’s achievements. A mother smiling silently as she watched her child read aloud. Friends walking together through village paths discussing examinations and future careers. These were ordinary moments, yet they spoke volumes about the transformative power of education.
What struck me the most was how confidence grows when opportunity meets determination. These girls were not asking for sympathy; they were asking for a fair chance. Through Smile Foundation’s scholarship programme, that chance was becoming a reality.
Behind every scholarship lies countless hours of effort by educators, community workers, mentors, and organisations committed to ensuring that talent is never limited by geography or financial hardship. Witnessing the work of the Smile Foundation team on the ground reinforced how sustained community engagement can create lasting impact.
As storytellers, our responsibility extends beyond creating visually appealing films. We document lives, preserve voices, and build bridges between those creating impact and those whose lives are being transformed. Every interview, every frame, and every candid smile becomes a testament to resilience.
When we finally wrapped up the shoot and began our journey back, the roads felt just as long. But this time, they carried memories instead of fatigue. The faces of the girls, their dreams, and their unwavering optimism travelled back with us.
The behind-the-scenes moments from this journey tell another story—the miles covered, the equipment carried through dusty village lanes, the laughter between takes, the patient waiting for the perfect light, and the collective effort of everyone involved in bringing these stories to life. While the final film will showcase the scholarship programme, these unseen moments celebrate the dedication behind documenting impact itself.
Some assignments end when the footage is transferred to a hard drive.
This one didn’t.
It continues every time I think about those determined young girls who reminded me that dreams do not depend on where you are born—they depend on whether someone believes you deserve the opportunity to pursue them.
In the villages of Jamui and Begusarai, I met an entire generation of girls who are ready to shape their own future, one classroom, one examination, and one dream at a time. Their stories are a reminder that when education is supported, aspirations are nurtured, and opportunities are created, young minds can transform not only their own lives but also the future of their communities.
