Five year old Vikas saw his mother fall into the burning brick kiln, helplessly. She was rushed to a govt. hospital by co-workers. While her treatment was going on, Vikas’s father ran away one day, leaving the family at the hospital, which included his little brother.
Hailing from rural Jharkhand, Vikas’s parents had migrated to Patna, Bihar to find work and feed the family.
After spending fifteen days in the hospital, and almost destitute now, they took a train to Rourkela, Odisha, without a penny in their hand to take support from distant relatives. Once there, no bus would give them a ride – his mother’s wounds were stinking.
Almost God-sent, a Good Samaritan fed them and left the children at Smile Foundation’s residential Mission Education programme centre at Kutra.
After five years, Vikas is now doing well in Class 5th at the centre, while his kid brother has just begun schooling there. His mother has recovered but can’t work to earn a living. She is now staying at the centre too.
Vikas says, “I will study hard to be a doctor and help people. I have seen my mother suffer so much.”
Like Vikas, most of the currently enrolled 150 children had no home when they were brought to the centre. But their optimism towards life and mutual affection has turned the place into a large, happy family.
Smile Foundation’s Mission Education programme is providing education to 19,000 children through 90 projects across India. These children are either homeless, orphaned, abandoned, or belong to extremely poor families. Leaving their circumstances behind, today they have started dreaming of a better, brighter future.
Each one of these children deserves at least a chance – a chance to break out of the cycle of poverty and ignorance, a chance to build an independent identity, a chance to have a dignified life.
This New Year, help us continue the education of these children and take them a step closer to their dreams.
