Swabhiman marks World Aids Day with community sensitisation

On December 1, 2012, when the world celebrated World AIDS Day in tune with the theme of "Getting to Zero: Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS related deaths", Swabhiman marked the day with a host of activities in all the nine intervention areas under its Integrated Slum Development Programme in Delhi NCR.

The activities, ranging from workshops and open discussions on transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS, screening of movies on the subject, street plays for sensitising the community about AIDS prevention, treatment and discrimination, and a painting competition for children on the theme of HIV/AIDS, were conducted for 600 target beneficiaries in the nine areas of New Ashok Nagar, Shashi Garden, Bismil Camp, Indira Camp, Valmiki Camp, Shri Ram JJ Camp, Idgah, Ambedkar Colony, and Nutt Colony.

These activities were carried out as per a planned module in the intervention areas by partner ngo's – Sahyogita, Health & Care Society and ADHAAR – with the aim of sensitising the community members, especially women and adolescents, about the global pandemic HIV/AIDS and to make them aware of RTI/STI infections and their prevention and treatment.

According to National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) report, released on December 1, 2012, an estimated 1.48 lakh people died of AIDS related causes in 2011 and an estimated 20.89 lakh people were living with HIV in India.
