SUMMARY:Personality development workshop for STeP students
DESCRIPTION:A personality development workshop was organised on January 1\, 2010\, at Ank\, a Smile Twin e- Learning Programme (STeP) centre located at Malviya Nagar\, New Delhi. At least 25 students participated in the two hour long workshop on ‘soft skills and personality development’ conducted by Anupam Sharma \, a management student from IIM- Indore. \nAs part of the team building workshop\, the students were divided into five groups and each group was assigned the task of making a building with a set of newspapers provided to them. The purpose was to highlight on the concept of stability and space. \nGroup discussion sessions were conducted on topics ‘need of computer education for the overall development of society’ and ‘need of English education in the present context’. It was followed by an interview session wherein the students were asked to answer a basic set of questions usually asked during interviews. \nThe workshop ended with tips given to the students on ‘how to prepare a good resume’ and ‘how to face an interview confidently’.

SUMMARY:Health camp organised to develop health seeking behavior at Kalighat in Kolkata
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation in association with Lafarge India Pvt. Ltd organised a general health camp on January 12\, 2010 at Kalighat Railway Sideing area\, Kolkata. The objective of health camp was to generate awareness about the need of regular health checkups in the target communities of Kalighat. \nShri. Neeraj Akhoury\, Senior Vice President Sales\, Lafarge India inaugurated the health camp. He addressed the community members and encouraged them for more active participation in the camp for developing better health seeking behavior. \nAround 200 labourers who work in the Kalighat Railway Station sideing\, their family members and children were the main beneficiaries of the health camp.

SUMMARY:Swabhiman girls perform at Airport Metro Express Line
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation organised a street play performance for construction workers of Airport Metro Express Line project on January 13\, 2010. The play was organised under Swabhiman\, the women and girl child empowerment programme of Smile Foundation. \nThrough the street play\, community educators from Swabhiman intervention areas sensitised 500-600 workers on the safety measures to be taken care by the workers at the construction sites. The street play was performed twice between 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. \nThe play was an effective means to sensitise the workers about the safety measures. The workers\, engineers and safety managers working under Alpine-Hindustan Construction Company joint venture appreciated the efforts by Swabhiman and Smile Foundation in creating awareness about the safety measures among the workers.

SUMMARY:STeP students visit Crompton Greaves’ factory
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation organised an exposure visit for the students of Smile Twin e-Learning Programme (STeP) at Crompton Greaves Factory at Mandideep\, Madhya Pradesh. \nFamily Planning Association of India\, Twin e-Learning centre in Bhopal organised this exposure visit for 17 students from Regional Technical Centre on January 23\, 2010. The students were accompanied by Mr. Syed Javed Ali from FPAI – RTC and Computer Teacher of STeP Bhopal & Ms Anita Sahu\, Computer Teacher of STeP. \nMs. Yasha from the HR Department\, Crompton Greaves welcomed the students on their arrival at the factory. The STeP students were then introduced to Mr. Arvind\, Engineer – Crompton Greaves\, who took students to all the divisions of the factory to explain the processes in detail. \nHe talked about the different Products\, Manufacturing processes\, Human Resource Management\, working of the Machinery and the rules & regulations to be followed inside the factory. He also answered to all the queries students had very patiently. \nThe students were very excited to see the factory of Crompton Greaves. Through such exposure visits\, the young students of STeP get to explore new jobs in different industries at length in detail. \nTowards the end the refreshments were distributed amongst the students and teachers.

SUMMARY:Swabhiman girls perform at Airport Express Metro Line
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation participated in Sarang 2010 IIT Madras for spreading awareness towards the plight of the underprivileged children in India. Videos on Girl Child and Child Labour provided by Smile Foundation were showcased during the event in the presence of gathering of around 12000 youth. The videos showed the state of underprivileged children on the streets and how education can improve their conditions and help them in being better citizens of society. \nPopular Playback singer\, music composer Shankar Mahadevan along with his band members Ehsaan and Loy performed at IIT Madras’s event – Sarang 2010. The 2 videos of Smile Foundation were showcased 5 times during the glamourous music concert.
