SUMMARY:Smile Foundation launches program to provide support to families affected by lockdown
DESCRIPTION:With the economic distress and ongoing lockdown\, Smile Foundation is distributing free ration to the underprivileged society and also providing tele-consulting and tele-counseling. Through these sessions\, the foundation will be talking about how to prevent COVID-19 by practicing social distancing and maintaining the hygiene of self and surroundings. \nApproximately 40\,000 families (more than 2 lakh+ people) across 10 worst-hit states\, namely Delhi\, Haryana\, Uttar Pradesh\, Maharashtra\, Gujarat\, Karnataka\, Telangana\, Tamil Nadu\, West Bengal\, and Punjab will benefit in the first phase of ration and essential services distribution. \n“During the last 15 years we must have worked with more than 12 disasters and every time we have reached out to the ones in need. This is something far bigger than anything that has happened in the past\, and our strength that is community reach has become our weakness in this scenario as being physically present on the ground is challenging. We are constantly guiding and training our health teams to deliver primary health needs to the underserved community by way of Tele counseling. Safety for one and all is our priority.” said Santanu Mishra\, Co-Founder\, and Executive Trustee\, Smile Foundation. \nSmile Foundation has developed a two-pronged strategy and aims to reach 1\,50\,000 such families in phases by providing dry ration and basic necessity kit as part of immediate relief for a month in the current times arising out of COVID-19. The kits include rice\, dal\, salt\, oil\, sugar\, masks\, sanitary pads\, soap to name a few and other essentials. \nSmile Foundation has now started providing online medical assistance and teleconsultation across affected areas of the country thereby providing healthcare services at home digitally and increasing awareness towards social distancing and hygiene. \nPrior to the lockdown\, more than 180 healthcare professionals (including doctors\, paramedical staff\, community health workers) were on the field every day through Smile’s mobile unit “Smile on Wheels” to spread awareness about protection from COVID-19 to the most vulnerable population\, living in 1000 communities spread across 19 States.

SUMMARY:Smile Foundation and Oppo India launch "Wall of Knowledge"
DESCRIPTION:While the pandemic has been difficult for everyone\, children have been the most affected during this time. The closing down of schools and staying at home and transition to virtual classrooms has impacted their mental well being. For millions of underprivileged children it has been more difficult as they have limited or no access to digital learning. For these children education has come to an abrupt halt. As per UNICEF data\, over 76% children in India are on the wrong side of the digital divide. \nIn this adverse scenario\, the Smile Foundation team has been trying its best to help the less privileged children continue their education. From home visits to distributing worksheets and study material from door to door\, from using alternate modes like television and radio to conducting cluster classes facilitated by community volunteers\, different methods are being explored to ensure that education does not stop for the children despite the pandemic. \nAn idea called ‘Be the Light to Spread the Light’ has been developed for Diwali. Under this initiative a “wall of knowledge” was created in collaboration with Oppo India\, consisting of an LED screen and attached smart phones. The aim is to give the less privileged children an opportunity to experience the exciting world of digital learning without having to bear the cost of owning a device. This initiative is expected to make learning in the neo normal scenario much more fun and engaging for the kids. \nThe “Wall of Knowledge” will be created with multiple community based organizations in Lucknow\, Kolkata\, Chennai\, Hyderabad and Noida.
