SUMMARY:Empowering Grassroots
DESCRIPTION:The growth of the non-profit sector in India in the last two decades has been phenomenal. India has possibly the largest number of active non-government\, not-for-profit organizations in the world. Official estimates put the number at 3.3 million. From relief services to educational initiatives\, from healthcare projects to housing organizations\, grassroots NGOs work in numerous spheres which touch the daily lives of marginalized communities across the country to aid in empowering grassroots. Engaging directly with the people\, these grassroots development NGOs are able to participate in the thought-making process of the communities they work with\, and thus have the capacity to bring about long-term change. As such\, the sector has had a substantial contribution in the nation building process. \nBut accelerated development soon reaches a stagnant point if it is not sustainable. Ensuring sustainability of initiatives requires a reorientation of NGOs focusing on their capacity building to attain competitiveness. This is not an easy transition\, requiring grassroots NGOs to rethink and reform their programme designs\, planning\, fund mobilisation\, fund management\, and effective programme delivery. There is also a need to guide these NGOs to be able to identify and adapt with the changing national and global socio-political and economic developments which affect them. To equip and facilitate grassroots NGOs in the country to address these issues and eventually aim at achieving sustainable grassroots empowerment and community development\, Smile Foundation initiated Empowering Grassroots. \nA national capacity building programme\, Empowering Grassroots is aimed at handholding\, training and enabling community based organisations (CBOs) to maximise their impact on the ground. Under ‘Empowering Grassroots’ initiative\, CBOs are trained on vital issues relevant to the development sector in the country like scalability\, sustainability\, communication\, resource mobilisation and governance by industry experts from reputed Indian and international organisations. Handholding meetings and face to face learning sessions are held round the year to help the CBOs effectively resolve their day to day operational challenges\, helping achieve the highest social return on investment (SROI). \nEmpowering Grassroots is not only an effort to strengthen the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid in India\, but also an attempt to bring transparency and accountability in the workings of the development sector at the grassroots level. So far\, Smile Foundation has built the capacities of more than 5000 grassroots development organizations under the initiative. \nTo know more about our international alliance Change the Game click here: https://www.smilefoundationindia.org/ctgi/

SUMMARY:Healthcare at the doorsteps of Bhalswa and Murga Farms
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation organized two health camps for the underprivileged community of Bhalswa re-settlement colony\, Delhi\, and Murga Farm\, DLF Phase III\, Gurgaon\, in association with BlackRock Gives (philanthropic arm of Black Rock Inc.)\, to provide preventive\, curative and promotive healthcare services to the slum dwellers\, especially women and children. \nThe re-settlement colony of Bhalswa was set up in year 2000 with families from Jehangirpuri\, Rohini and Nizamuddin. There are around 300 families with a population of 1000. Majority of people living here are illiterate and into unorganised labour. Men work as rag pickers and women are domestic maids. \nThrough these two camps\, curative services were rendered to 477 patients\, comprising 187 children\, by a panel of gynaecologist\, paediatrician and a general physician. Most of the cases pertained to respiratory and urinary infection\, ENT problems\, RTI\, anaemia\, stomach problems\, injuries\, allergy\, and gastric issues. \nAround 20 employees of BlackRock India rendered their services as volunteers towards the smooth functioning of the camp.

SUMMARY:Swabhiman workshop on Healthy Eating and Nutrition
DESCRIPTION:Under the Swabhiman programme\, a three day workshop was conducted on Healthy Eating and Nutrition for young girls and women\, at three Swabhiman centres – AADHAR\, Sahyogita Samaj Vikas Sansthan and Health & Care Society. The workshop held from June 27-29\, 2013\, was intended to make the beneficiaries aware about the right eating habits during puberty\, menstruation\, pregnancy and lactation. \nA woman has not only her own\, but also her family’s health to look after. In underprivileged households\, due to lack of means\, education and awareness\, nutrition and health often take a back seat. Most mothers are happy if their children can get two square meals a day\, without bothering about its nutrition content. Their own health comes last\, which is unfortunate as women are the bearers of a future generation. \nThe workshop was an initiative to promote a health-seeking behaviour in underprivileged women so that their families and communities can develop a conscious awareness about the importance of health and nutrition. It was conducted by three trained resource persons – Sangeeta Raj\, Neeta Arora and Anita Papreja and attended by 123 beneficiaries. \nDiscussions were held on several issues vital to a woman’s health like diabetes mellitus\, hypertension during pregnancy\, teen pregnancy\, benefits of vegetarian diets\, importance of nutrition for adolescent girls\, healthy diet for a lactating mother and proper iron and calcium intake. \nThe discussions were followed by curious questions from the beneficiaries\, who after initial hesitation\, participated actively in the workshop. To assess their understanding\, group presentations were organized during which the women confidently explained the issues discussed during the workshop.

SUMMARY:Enhancing the scalability and sustainability of grassroots NGOs
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation organised a three-day capacity building programme\, Empowering Grassroots\, to enable and equip genuine grassroots NGOs to participate in the process of social change at the local level effectively\, by enhancing their scalability and sustainability. The event was conducted from July 10-12\, 2013\, under the guidance of subject experts\, trainers and international observers. \nThe grassroots NGOs in India have been doing remarkable work in different areas of social development. By engaging directly with the community\, these NGOs are able to identify and address the specific concerns of the people. But unfortunately such initiatives are unable to sustain themselves due to lack of support\, adequate communication channels and proper governance. \nSmile Foundation has built the capacities of 500 grassroots NGOs in the last two years under its Empowering Grassroots programme. Addressing the programme\, Mr. Vikram Singh Verma\, Chief Operating Officer\, Smile Foundation\, said\, “Smile Foundation sees itself not as a funding agency\, but as a national development organisation\, that not only supports but helps build capacities at the grassroots so that they eventually become self sustainable.” \nThe event held interactive sessions on key aspects like building local support for sustainable fundraising\, project management\, better fund utilisation\, need of proper communication and brand building\, meeting the expectations of donors\, communicating with the stakeholders\, leadership and the practice of good governance. By bringing together NGOs from all over the country\, the programme also provided them a common platform to share their experiences and challenges. \nTalking about the thought behind Empowering Grassroots\, Mr. Santanu Mishra\, Co Founder & Executive Trustee\, Smile Foundation\, said\, “As an organisation\, Smile Foundation has always aimed to identify\, handhold and build capacities of genuine grassroots NGOs to achieve accountability\, sustainability\, scalability and leadership. Empowering Grassroots is an extension of this effort in order to maximise reach and optimise returns by approaching and strengthening a large number of like-minded individuals and organisations globally.”

SUMMARY:Swabhiman programme launched in Bangalore
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation has taken a step forward in restoring the rightful position of women in society by taking its programme for empowerment of women and girls\, Swabhiman\, to Karnataka. \nThe programme was launched on July 12\, 2013 in Hegganahalli and Ramanna Badavane settlements in Bangalore. It is being supported by Shankara Infrastructure Materials Limited\, in association with DANI Development and Social Action. \nThe focus of the project is on the reproductive and sexual health of adolescent girls and young women. Due to illiteracy and lack of awareness about health and hygiene\, most young girls and women neglect important nutritional and sanitary requirements of the body\, resulting in health problems. \nCovering a population of 10\,000\, Smile Foundation aims to bring pride and dignity in the lives of these girls and women by enabling them to discover and explore their full potential in every sphere – be it home\, work place or community. \nThe Swabhiman centre was inaugurated by chief guest Sukumar Srinivas\, Managing Director\, Shankara Infrastructure Materials Limited. He addressed the session by applauding Smile Foundation and DANI Development and Social Action\, for empowering the underprivileged women. \nSwabhiman works on the ‘4-S Model’\, which is an acronym for four novel approaches – Seeking Healthcare as a Behaviour\, Support for Education\, Supporters in Men through Male Involvement\, and Sustaining the Change in Communities. The programme is specifically aimed at realisation of both individual and collective self-esteem and inner strength\, for marginalised and socially excluded women and adolescent girls\, through innovative community practices. \nSpeaking about the association\, Smita Kalappa\, National Director\, Child for Child programme\, said\, “Smile Foundation\, through Swabhiman programme\, identifies adolescent girls and women from the community and develops them into Change Agents\, who in turn actively contribute to the community development process. We are happy to open our first Swabhiman centre in Karnataka and hope this project will be a huge success\, changing lives of many women. Since its inception in the year 2005\, the programme has benefitted over 150\,000 girls and young women to be suitably prepared and oriented for a dignified and empowered future.”
