SUMMARY:Workshop on Protecting Children and Adolescents from Sexual Predators
DESCRIPTION:Sexual abuse of children and adolescents is increasingly becoming a matter of great concern. According to a 2007 nationwide study by the government\, 53 per cent of children reported one or more forms of sexual abuse and 50 per cent of abusers were known to the child or were in a position of trust and responsibility. \nIn an effort to sensitize the school authorities on the growing incidences of sexual abuse of children and adolescents and ways to protect them\, Smile Foundation recently held a sensitisation workshop for principals and heads of 14 schools in the region through its Child for Child programme. \nThe workshop\, ‘Protecting Our Children and Adolescents from Sexual Predators’\, was conducted by Dr. Ali Khwaja\, Founder and Head of Banjara Academy. It focused on ways schools can safeguard their children from people who could turn out to be sexual predators. \nCrucial points touched upon by Dr. Khwaja included the importance of sex education and role of parents in providing early sex education in the family; improvement in interpersonal relationships by developing an understanding of children and adolescents; parenting issues; and ways of handling children of all age groups by teachers. \nDr. Khwaja said\, “Children are abused not only by cruel people\, but also by people who pretend to love them. The best weapon that a child can use to protect himself is to raise his voice and be heard. If we empower the child to speak out and express\, any child will be able to protect him/herself far better.” \nPrincipals and heads of schools who attended the workshop\, voiced their appreciation for the informative session\, which they felt would help them connect better with their students and understand their issues. \nThe Child for Child programme of Smile Foundation has actively been involved in the sensitisation of the privileged masses to engage them in the process of change. Last year\, the programme reached out to 900 reputed schools in 410 districts of India\, sensitising the children\, their parents and teachers. \nSmile Foundation is a non-profit development organisation working for the welfare of underprivileged women\, youth and children in 25 states across India. It directly reaches out to 200\,000 underprivileged people through 185 projects on education\, health\, livelihood and empowerment of women and girl children.

SUMMARY:Smile on Wheels launched in Bangalore in partnership with BAE Systems
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation launched its mobile medical unit Smile on Wheels in partnership with BAE Systems to provide primary healthcare services to underserved communities in Bengaluru. \nApart from affording doorstep access to state-of-the-art medical equipments and facilities to urban poor communities in the city\, the programme also envisages setting up referral linkages with local hospitals as well as a establishing a community health fund to become self-sustaining over the long-term. \nFlagging off the mobile unit\, BAE Systems Chairman Richard Olver said\, “The India community investment programme in India is a fine demonstration of our shared global value of investing actively in the communities in which we work\, including supporting social development. This healthcare programme is dedicated to the city of Bengaluru\, the home of the India Hawk and the country’s aerospace sector which is spearheaded by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited\, with whom we have the privilege of a strong\, trusted relationship borne of our longstanding collaboration on the Hawk programme.” \nThe Smile on Wheels is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility programme in India through which it supports development programmes in the areas of primary education and healthcare in rural and urban communities across seven states of the country. \nThe ceremony\, held at BAeHAL Limited\, saw BAE Systems CEO Ian King hand over the keys of the mobile medical unit to Chief Operating Officer\, Smile Foundation\, Vikram Singh Verma and Bangalore Baptist Hospital CEO Dr. Alexander Thomas. Bangalore Baptist Hospital will be the implementing partner for the programme. \nMr. Verma said\, “This new Smile on Wheels is an excellent addition to our existing fleet of 23 mobile health units and enables a further expansion of our programme in Karnataka. The success of the Smile on Wheels model lies in its accessibility\, availability and affordability for target populations with a special focus on children and women. With this\, we are happy to deepen our partnership with BAE Systems as well as join hands with Bangalore Baptist Hospital who have an excellent track record of delivering community health services. I am confident that over time\, the benefits of this programme will extend far beyond health services and lead to a measurable all-round improvement in the health-seeking behaviour of the communities it serves.” \nDr. Thomas further said\, “Bangalore Baptist Hospital has been serving the poor and underprivileged with quality\, ethical medical care for the past 40 years. We have been able to overcome the barriers of financial and physical inaccessibility to healthcare through our outreach services. We are indeed very happy to partner with Smile Foundation in their Smile of Wheels project that would further strengthen our efforts. We also thank BAE Systems for their support.”
