DESCRIPTION:A workshop in association with Kapowow fashion studio was organized for young girl beneficiaries of Smile. These girls were trained in preparing fashionable necklines for various outfits designed and tailored in the fashion studio. These workshops continued for 2 months continuously. DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation’s girl child and women empowerment programme\, Swabhiman\, recently conducted a poster-making competition at the College of Arts\, New Delhi. The event saw participation from numerous undergraduate students of the college. \nPoster making is one of the main subjects that is taught at the College of Arts and the students were very thrilled at the idea of the Given the fact that the so many creative heads had come together for the event\, there was a lot of creativity in the form of visual images that came forward. In addition\, it was wonderful to see such varied and colourful imagery coming from different individuals regarding a single concept. It was wonderful to see that all the students beautifully portrayed the connection between the importance of education and development of the girl child. \n21 posters were selected among many entries as the best ones that could capture and communicate the core concept of the Beti Bhi Apni Hai campaign.

SUMMARY:Health Awareness Camp with Barclays
DESCRIPTION:A health awareness camp was organized in Tughlaqabad\, New Delhi by Smile Foundation in association with Barclays Bank. This camp was organized for the underprivileged children and people living in the slums in the area. 22 employees from Barclays Bank participated in this initiative. This camp has benefitted over 1000 households in the entire community. \nMobilization\, general health check up\, eye checkup\, session on health and hygiene\, fumigation and a street play addressing the issues related to water borne diseases were among the activities which were conducted in the health camp. \nMobilization work was done in the community with the help of local community members and the information was spread among the people of the community through posters\, banners and pamphlets. On the day of the event\, employees from Barclays along with Smile representatives took part in the initiative and reached around 150 families thus directly benefitting approximately 370 people. \n297 patients were examined in the general health check up and were given free medicines; 108 patients were attended in the eye check up camp and 58 among them were detected with weak eye sight and were give free spectacles. \nA session on personal health and hygiene was conducted by Barclays employees in two community based schools. Over 340 children participated in this session and were free hygiene kits too. They were also shown movies and given pamphlets to explain the significance of hygiene and sanitation. \nThe street play was conducted at 4 spots of the community and saw a gathering of over 800 people. This play was based on issues relating the hazards of water borne diseases. The event was brought to a close with a fumigation activity\, where government personnel\, volunteers and local people came together and fumigated the entire area which has more than 1000 households.

SUMMARY:Exposure Visit To D.B. City\, M.P. Nagar\, Bhopal
DESCRIPTION:STeP centre in Bhopal took the Smile Twin E-learning students to D.B. City for exposure visit on 11th November 2010. Total 7 students (Boys – 3\, Girls – 4) were taken by STeP centre coordinator and faculties. STeP students were surprised to see such a big mall in Bhopal. There were six floors in the DB City. All the floors were seen by the students and they were seeing the first time such a big mall and they were enjoyed the visit. They were asking many questions to the seller of each department and they were given them explanation. The students were saying that first time they are seeing the electric lift and they were frightened to get in first time\, after that they were used to and happy to get in. We have also showed them how the staff work and make the bills etc. and how to talk with the customers friendly. The students were learned many things from the staff. They showed all mall and given the explanation of the mall. There were many students\, families; children all were come to see the mall again. \nAll the students were excited to see a huge organization and their working style. After seeing the working condition the children have understood to how to work\, how team workers are working and their responsibilities in the department. They have understood many things after seeing the mall. At present they have learned many things after the visit different items\, their selling procedure\, how to talk to customers\, how to make the bills\, how to behave to customers. Then after seeing the security department they were asking why there is so many checking and we were explained for the security reason. All this were new to all of them. \nExposure visit to DB Mall helped the students to understand the basics of organized retailing and opportunities for youth to get employment. They also had an opportunity to learn how products are advertised and exhibited by various vendors and the theory behind each display formats.

SUMMARY:First look at I am Kalam
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation showcased the first look of I am Kalam in a press conference held at the Press Club of India in New Delhi. This film addresses the important issue of child education and Smile is the first ever development organization to produce a feature film. \nSpeaking to media\, Veteran actor Gulshan Grover\, who plays an important character in this film said\, “This film holds a very special place for me because it is an effort from my end to voice the issue that I have always believed in. This film will definitely help to sensitize the privileged mass to do there bit towards the society.” \nWinner of 3 awards\, the film has already been selected for 16 film festivals. ‘I Am Kalam’ was premiered in the Marche Du section at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie has already won the Best Feature Film award at the Lucas Film Festival\, Don Quijote Prize of the Federation Internationale des Cine –Clubs in Germany and Audience Choice Film Award at the London Film Festival 2010. \nHarsh Mayyar\, the child artist who debuts with this film said\, “I Am Kalam for me was like living my dream in reality. I feel proud to be a part of this great film which depicts the aspirations of so many children like me. I am happy to see the film doing so well around the world. It’s great to hear that the audience globally has appreciated the work.” \nSpeaking on the occasion Nila Madhab Panda\, Director of I am Kalam expressed\, “I wanted to send out a message that effort is more powerful then fate and that the privileged mass must join the effort to educate underprivileged children and help them to dream and turn their dreams into breathing reality. The film celebrates the survival of the human spirit against overwhelming odds. It is an inspirational film aimed at both children and adult viewers.” \nThe Film also received a special mention at the Cine Kids awards held in Amsterdam during the last week of October\, 2010.The film is also participating in the International Film Festival of India\, Goa and the Mumbai International Film Festival. The movie has also been nominated for the “Politiken Audience Award” at Buster film festival\, Denmark; The Lion Award for best feature film; and The Audience Award at the Cinekid Film festival\, Amsterdam.

A game was also organized for the people visiting the exhibition\, with the purpose of educating them on various social problems that women and girls face such as Eve-Teasing\, Dowry\, Early Marriage\, Rape\, HIV/AIDS\, Domestic Violence\, Prostitution\, etc. This game successfully engaged many people who appreciated it highly when they finished playing it. All the visitors also signed pledges for Smile Foundation in the exhibition.

The students were very excited to meet the bollywood superstar and were overwhelmed with his gesture of personally coming to motivate them for their challenge. \nThe event was an enjoyable one for everybody. During the lecture Ms. Shaila Gokhale shares her experience & views with the student. \nShe guides the student about healthy food habits\, hygenic conditions and Safe Living. \nThe session was very interactive\, she also asks students to do mock plays. STeP students promised to utilised this training and apply the same in their day to day life.

SUMMARY:I am Kalam wins hearts and accolades at IFFI Goa
DESCRIPTION:‘I am Kalam’\, the feature film produced by Smile Foundation\, was recently screened at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI)\, Goa. The film has received great response from the audience and the media present at the film festival. The leading cast and crew including veteran actor Gulshan Grover\, protagonist and debutante child artist Harsh Mayyar\, French theatre actress Beatrice Ordeix and director Nila Madhab Panda along with the Smile Foundation team were present at the film festival. \nThe film has already won the Best Feature Film award at the Lucas Film Festival and the Don Quijote Prize of the Fédération Internationale des Ciné-Clubs. The film was also screened at the Cinekid International Film Festival in Amsterdam\, where it earned a “Special Mention”. As many as 50 organizations from 15 states of India participated in the consultation and the entire proceedings took place in the presence of the Planning Commission’s representatives. \nMr. Pabitra Banerjee\, General Manager Programmes\, of Smile Foundation chaired the entire session of the consultation\, while representatives from Planning Commission\, Population Foundation of India\, ICRW\, CEDPA\, Solution Exchange\, Mc Arthur Foundation and Ford Foundation were few of the other panelists. \nThe Planning Commission has initiated the process towards the preparation of 12th Five Year Plan through such consultations\, the Commission has opened up the process for consultancy and inputs from the civil society. This is also the first step of the Commission to include the civil society in developing an approach paper for the planning of the 12th Five Year Plan \nThis is a huge opportunity for Smile Foundation to work closely with the Government of India ensuring the inclusion of the voices of the socially excluded groups.

DESCRIPTION:The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) recently associated with Smile Foundation to make a documentary film on girl child related issues in India. This documentary is based on the life of an underprivileged girl living in very difficult circumstances and how education changes her life for good. \nSwabhiman\, the girl child and women empowerment programme of Smile Foundation intervenes in numerous slum areas of Delhi. \nOne of the Swabhiman beneficiaries and health volunteers was selected to play the protagonist of the documentary. The film was shot by a professional team from Washington\, in Shri Ram J.J. Camp of New Delhi\, one of the intervention areas of the Swabhiman programme. \nThe Swabhiman Health Volunteer\, Usha\, could play the protagonist only because she was trained and groomed in Mime and other skills in the skill building workshops organized by Smile Foundation. This documentary film will be screened at the prestigious 2020 Conference to be held in February 2011. This conference will see participation from national and international delegates from across the globe.

DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Westside\, Channai Smile Foundation organized Employer Engagement Program fro the Arunodya STeP center in Chennai. The program was held on 9th December 2010. Mr. Ramakrishnan\, Deputy General Manager of Westside Chennai interacted with the STeP students. \nThe program started with a mutual introduction\, the employer explained about company’s profile\, nature of requirement\, job nature\, salary package\, and other benefits and if candidates are selected how their career will be developed and also the placement availability in Westside\, Chennai outlet. After the orientation session\, students asked many questioned as well doubts and all their questions were answered as well as doubts were cleared by Mr.Ramakrishnan. \nNearly 47 students participated in the program and the program motivated 27 students to participate in the interview so as to make use of the golden opportunity.

DESCRIPTION:Smile foundation in association with Vihaan – the Social Service Cell of Faculty of Management Studies\, New Delhi\, organized “Uththaan” 2010. \nUththaan is the flagship event of FMS’s annual fest which aims to contribute to the society in a meaningful manner by addressing various societal issues. \nFor this initiative\, the erudite management students leveraged their knowledge\, skills and creative methodologies to inculcate learning modules to the deprived sections of the society. This unique philanthropic activity will go a long way to bridge the gap by means of access to basic-education-for-all. \nThis year\, under the initiative\, I am Kalam the feature film produced by Smile Foundation was floated amongst the participants of the leading MBA institutions like IIM’s\, FMS\, XLRI\, SP Jain\, SIBM\, JBIMS\, etc. The teams had to state the differently\, the social problems depicted in the movie and also providing innovative cost-effective measures to address the issues that loom large in the contemporary period. \nWhile 45 entries from top 15 management colleges of India submitted their entries\, 5 of them got shortlisted for the second round. The top two presentations among them were conferred with cash prizes of Rs 20\,000 and Rs 10\,000 respectively. Present at the occasion\, Mr. M. L. Singla of Faculty of Management Studies said “We partnered with Smile Foundation to catalyze social change in the country through innovative strategies. I am Kalam is truly an inspiring movie for every child to create a zeal for education.”

The beginning of this day was marked by the ladies playing Santa to the kids and showering them with goodies. The girls made the day even more special by singing and dancing for the kids. The ambience was filled with joie de vivre and the children loved every moment of it. \nThe girls inspired the underprivileged community to dream high\, be successful in their lives and make the nation proud. Present at the occasion Ms. Shweta Dolli\, one of the finalists said “It always feels great to celebrate the spirit and joy of festivities with kids. This is the time to spread joy and smiles across faces and it has been a wonderful experience as I am reliving my childhood days with these kids. I see the spark to excel amongst all the kids and I will be more than happy to be associated with them in whatever way I can.” \nAdding to this Ms. Akansha Patil\, another finalist said “The kind of work and effort that Smile Foundation is putting in to bring joy and happiness in the lives of these underprivileged children is commendable. Followed by\, there was a session about internet and the use of internet in future career\, How to prepare resume\, how to find a matching job for ourselves. \nMotivation and Goal setting in Life: \nThe third session was dealt by two volunteers from FIS. Main purpose of the session was to motivate the children to take necessary steps to enrich their life as well as future career. It provided valuable inputs like\, How to set goals in life\, How to motivate yourself\, How to boost your skills and abilities\, Stress management and problem solving \nThe volunteers also provided different techniques and tips to do relaxation exercises and it has been practiced by each and every student by the end of the session. \nThe FIS\, volunteers come prepared to handle the session in a very simple and student friendly manner.

The station along with the support of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd\, Mid Day and Vijay Sales put together a memorable Christmas for the kids. \nThe surprise of the evening kick-started when Ajay Devgan arrived at 94.3 Radio One’s studio along with the Toon cast from the movie ‘Toonpur Ka Superr Hero’. The Toonpur Ka Superr Hero indeed brought a smile on the faces of the kids. He also\, made their Christmas very special by distributing the gifts that were collected from all the listeners across the city. There was a tattoo artist present there who made artificial tattoos for all the children. \n“It was so heart-warming to see Ajay Devgan extend his support towards this cause. The Toonpur Ke Superr Hero sure knows how to bring excitement amongst the kids. It made the kids feel special as Ajay along with the toons distributed gifts to the kids.
