SUMMARY:Barclays Bank imparts financial literacy to STeP students
DESCRIPTION:The employees of Barclays Bank spent a day to impart financial literacy among the under-privileged youth of Manesar\, a rural district in Haryana located beyond Gurgaon. \nSmile Foundation has been training youth in livelihood skills in Manesar village and imparting them knowledge in computer\, English\, personality development and health awareness. Till date more than 100 youth in the area have been empowered through such trainings. \nThere is a need to increase awareness and knowledge of rural population on banking\, how to utilise the various products offered by the banks and increase their savings and secure their future financially. There is a need to instil the habit of savings from the period one starts earning. The youth from STeP programme who start earning require training on how to open a bank account. \nBarclays Bank employees spent 4 hours with the youth and women from the surrounding area and briefed them on the basics of the financial sector. They told many useful things like how one can open account with banks\, the importance of a savings accounts\, the procedure for procuring different loans\, job opportunities with the bank\, effective money management etc. \nAmong other activities done on the day were group discussions on govt. sector jobs vs. pvt. sector jobs. The students were divided into 2 groups and the employees moderated the session. In the end some fun activities were conducted like word power\, damsheraz and singing competition.

An interaction with the target communities of different programmes under Smile Foundation helped the students in developing new perspectives in the area of socio economic sector. \nSharing the experience one of the students\, Tim Ramsche said ‘There is a contrast between the economic growth and need for a vast section of the society to develop in India. It is a thrilling experience to see the people who have the aspiration and determination to achieve a better life in spite of various odd circumstances.

Eminent personalities from various NGOs and corporate houses like Rakesh Malhotra (Project Director RMoL)\,Rajendra Joshi (Managaing Trustee\, Ssaath Charitable Trust)\,Vikas Goswami (Lead CSR-Microsoft) and KB Kothari(Trustee-Pratrham-Rajasthan) participated in the panel discussion on different perceptions regarding Information and communication technologies and its relevance in our society. \nMeghna Shah who is associated with American India Foundation conducted a session on resource mobilisation in the development sector. She also shared some useful tips on drafting a proposal to donor agencies.Challenges of enhancing IT skills among the unemployed underprivileged youth was also discussed during the event.

SUMMARY:Kendriya Vidyalaya students sensitised on plight of underprivileged children
DESCRIPTION:In order to further strengthen its objective of raising awareness among the privileged section of the society on the plight of the children of the underprivileged section\, Smile Foundation organised a skill building event to sensitise the school children of Kendriya Vidyalaya\, Arjungarh\, New Delhi. The painting completion conducted at the school for the students of the school comprising of the all three – the primary\, middle and senior classes was aimed at bringing the students to a platform where they develop their understandings on the plight of the underprivileged students in their own locality\, city and the country. \nThe total number of thirteen hundred students who participated in the painting completion drew sketches of how they see the underprivileged children in and around themselves. The thoughts ranged from child labour\, unhygienic conditions in the urban slums to social evils like female feticides and other environmental issues. \nSmile Foundation plans to organise further completions on creative aspects of the school students like poem writing and essay writing as part of the sensitisation activities under its “Be the Change” campaign with Kendriya Vidyalaya\, Arjungarh and various other schools across the country.

She appreciated the skit on the movie ‘Sholay’ performed by Smile kids and expressed her interest to learn the dramatic skills from the children. Saloni interacted with the parents of the children and distributed chocolates to the children at the camp. The event was covered by the national news channel Star News and was broadcasted the next day.

DESCRIPTION:Children from various projects of Smile Foundation at Mumbai were invited to be a part of the evening show at Meow Radio\, Mumbai on the occasion of Anti Child Labour Day (April 30\, 2010) The children discussed about their hobbies\, favorite food and ambitions for life with the Radio Jockey. Small eyes and big dreams these children want to become Police Inspector\, Prime Minister\, Miss India\, Doctor and IAS Officer etc. \nRadio Jockey Samipa played the songs of their choice during the show. Representatives from Smile Foundation sensitised the audience further on the plight of the children of the underprivileged section of the society in India. Kids too got an opportunity to go live on air and sing their favourite songs and prayers for the listeners. \nChildren from Smile Foundation’s project centres in Mumbai celebrated the Anti Child Labour Day (April 30\, 2010) at the studio of Radio Mirchi\, Mumbai. The children talked about themselves\, their life and other areas of interest. Representatives from Smile Foundation informed the audience about the various national level programmes being taken up at Smile Foundation towards the betterment of the life of underprivileged children in India. \nRadio Jockey Jeetu Raaj played many interesting songs during the show. Kids too joined Jeetu Raj by singing their favourite songs live on the air.

SUMMARY:Smile Foundation's Children celebrate Anti Child Labour Day on Meow Radio
DESCRIPTION:Children from various projects of Smile Foundation at Mumbai were invited to be a part of the evening show at Meow Radio\, Mumbai on the occasion of Anti Child Labour Day (April 30\, 2010) The children discussed about their hobbies\, favorite food and ambitions for life with the Radio Jockey. Small eyes and big dreams these children want to become Police Inspector\, Prime Minister\, Miss India\, Doctor and IAS Officer etc. \nRadio Jockey Samipa played the songs of their choice during the show. Representatives from Smile Foundation sensitised the audience further on the plight of the children of the underprivileged section of the society in India. Kids too got an opportunity to go live on air and sing their favourite songs and prayers for the listeners. \nChildren from Smile Foundation’s project centres in Mumbai celebrated the Anti Child Labour Day (April 30\, 2010) at the studio of Radio Mirchi\, Mumbai. The children talked about themselves\, their life and other areas of interest. Representatives from Smile Foundation informed the audience about the various national level programmes being taken up at Smile Foundation towards the betterment of the life of underprivileged children in India. \nRadio Jockey Jeetu Raaj played many interesting songs during the show. Kids too joined Jeetu Raj by singing their favourite songs live on the air.

The community educators and volunteers of the Swabhiman Programmes – girl child and women empowerment programme of Smile Foundation – who presented the play used this medium to generate awareness and provide necessary tips on making motherhood safe and secure for the women in our society. \nThe play also talked about the participation of the community to bring in safety and security to motherhood as the characters and story of the play were linked to real life people in family and society and also the day to day happenings during the pregnancy and post delivery of a woman. \nThe street play was broadcast live on Salam Namaste\, a Noida based community radio station. The Swabhiman team also spread the message on the need for safe motherhood through an exclusive interview on a Salam Namaste after the play.

SUMMARY:Health camp at Punjab focuses on eye and dental care
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation organised a health camp on eye and dental care at Fagwara in Punjab on May 19\, 2010 in association with Dr. S Rajan (MBBS\, MS)\, the eye specialist and the Dental specialists – Dr. Harjinder Singh (BDS) and Dr. Sukhbir Kaur from the city. \nThe camp stationed at the Saffron Public School in the city was instrumental in inspecting the eyes and teeth of around eleven hundred (1100) students of the school and the staff members. Doctors and other medical experts present at the camp provided useful tips to the children on oral hygiene and eye care. \nThe students of the school were also shown some short films on the dreams and aspirations of the children from the underprivileged section of the society in India. The students from various age groups in the school got sensitised on the plight of the less privileged children and were eager to know more about the children from the underprivileged section. \nApart from the team of the health camp\, executives from Smile Foundation\, the staff members of the school also actively participated in conducting the health camp smoothly. The Principal of the Saffron Public School Ms Sandeepa Sood attended the camp as chief guest. Various Hindi and Punjabi newspapers and local electronic media covered the event and reports were published on the subsequent day.

SUMMARY:Certificate Distribution ceremony at STeP centre supported by Samsung
DESCRIPTION:A certificate distribution ceremony was arranged on June 10\, 2010 for the first batch of the STeP centre at Khora Colony\, New Delhi. Training at this STeP centre was started in December and is supported by Samsung. The Director Operations of Smile Foundation\, Mr. H. N. Sahay along with the STeP team attended the ceremony. They interacted with the students\, shared their experiences and discussed their feedback. \nA career counseling session was also arranged by HCL for preparing the students and helping them choose the right career path. \nOut of the 15 students of the first batch\, 13 have already found good placements at the NSB BPO\, Aroh Foundation and United Dignovation BPO.

DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation has been awarded the Barclays Bank Chairman’s Award for putting its best efforts along with the bank’s Indian employees in helping disadvantaged communities. \nThe 14th annual Chairman’s Awards was held in Madrid. This global award ceremony is organised by Barclays to recognise and celebrate colleagues’ achievements in their local communities. The award is given to the employees and the NGO for working together in devising innovative strategies to bring a positive change in the lives of the marginalised. \nSmile Foundation was chosen from among 376 nominations from 27 countries covering every area of business. The Foundation along with the bank’s representative Awanish Gupta\, Manager – Retail Banking\, was recognised for their outstanding commitment to bring a change. \nSmile Foundation and Barclays have worked together to help 200 underprivileged young boys and girls in taking up the career of their choice at Smile Twin e-Learning Programme (STeP) centres. Apart from this\, the Foundation and Barclays devised a holistic programme to spread awareness on health related issues of women and HIV in some specific locales of New Delhi\, which have a considerably large population of immigrants and young girls engaged in adultery.

And this time they had specially invited children from Smile Foundation to be a part of the book’s release. \nThe event began with an introduction of how the Limca Book of Records celebrates the unheard heroes of the country. Notable quizmaster Barry ‘O Brien\, engaged the children in stepping forward with any talent they had\, be it singing\, dancing\, mimicking\, reading out poems or even performing acrobatics. Goodies were given to all these children and extraordinary performances were awarded with a copy of the newest edition of the book. \nThis interactive session was followed by an enthralling dance performance by the famous Prince Dance Troupe. The entire audience\, children and grownups alike\, was gripped by the exhibit of this unmatched talent on stage and applauded enormously. \nThe event then moved forward to the felicitation of the seven dignitaries\, Rahul Dravid being one of them. Rahul Dravid interacted with the children and answered all their innocent questions with great enthusiasm. He also made the kids understand that every single person is born with certain talent; all we need to do is identify it and then nurture the talent with great passion. \nThe children also enjoyed themselves getting close to their cricket idol and shared with him their ambition of being able to play international cricket when they grow up.

DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation associated with Cotton Council International as partner for a pan India t-shirt designing competition\, TeeZing. DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation associated with Cotton Council International as partner for a pan India t-shirt designing competition\, TeeZing. The competition was held in 6 cities across India – Delhi\, Kolkata\, Chandigarh\, Ahmedabad\, Pune and Hyderabad. \nThis month long competition offered every participant – young and old\, a chance to showcase their creativity and sketching skills.
