SUMMARY:Ajay and Kajol play Valentine for Smile Kids
DESCRIPTION:Love is universal and Smile is pervasive. Believing in the philosophy\, Bollywood icons Ajay Devgan and Kajol spend their Valentine’s Day 2009 with the kids of Smile Foundation in Mumbai. \nThe children of Smile Foundation were overjoyed when they came face to face with these celebrities on the sets of ‘Toonpur Ka Superhero’ the forthcoming movie featuring Ajay and Kajol. In an endeavour to make this day special Ajay Devgan and Kajol wished to celebrate ‘Valentine’s Day’ and spend some quality time with the kids of the Smile Foundation. \nThe kids were thrilled when Ajay and Kajol shook hands with them and wished them “Happy Valentine’s Day.” One of the kids Shanu delighted the couple by presenting a dance on their favourite number ‘dekho dekho jaanam hum’ from the movie Ishq. \nAjay obliged the kids by inviting them to go on the sets and watch the shooting. They were amazed to see the grandeur and the ambience of the set. Children loved talking with chirpy Kajol and asked a lot of questions such as what her favourite colour is and what she likes to eat. \nOne Smile girl complimented Kajol and said ‘Didi aap bahot sundar ho. Main bade hokar aap jaisi banana chanhti hoon” (Sister\, you are so pretty. I wish to be like you when I grow up). \nIt was an opportunity for the ever joyous Kajol to become a kid all over again. Kajol mingled with them and asked all the kids their names and got pictures clicked with them. \nKajol said\, “I wished I had some more time to spend with these kids. It’s been a great time being with them.” \nThe children presented red roses to their valentines and the couple gave autographs to the children. \nSmile Kids wish the Ajay and Kajol as blessed valentines and success in their endeavours!

SUMMARY:International Women's Day Let girls not be puppets
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation celebrated International Women’s Day\, with a campaign titled “Main Ek Katputli Hoon” – meaning ‘I am just a puppet’. The campaign started with a multi-theme puppet show at Dilli Haat conducted by girls who are community leaders from various underprivileged areas of Delhi. The puppet show titled “Main Ek Katputli Hoon” was aimed at communicating the life of girl child from ‘Womb to Tomb’ and also disseminating positive message on HIV / AIDS and against eve teasing\, and thus commemorating International Women’s Day 2009. \nSmile Foundation\, through this ancient art of storytelling\, attempted to portray life of the girl child in our society. The show was performed by community health workers and volunteers under the Swabhiman programme of Smile Foundation. Swabhiman programme stands for self respect and dignity of the girl child and woman across various sections of the society. \nChief Guest on the occasion\, Ms. Pamela Philipose\, Director\, Women’s Feature Service\, noted journalist and activist said\, “Smile Foundation has adopted a very new way of highlighting the declining sex ratio in our country\, the concern that is one of the most serious challenges facing India today”. \nThe audience was enthralled as the community health workers performed the puppet show with male counterparts’ together standing up for the rights of the girl child and women. Complemented with music and folklores the puppet show supplemented the theme of United Nations International Women’s Day 2009\, ‘Women and men united to end violence against women and girls’. Realising the need of girl child education and promote women empowerment\, Swabhiman programme of Smile Foundation enhances the skills and information relevant to make girls and women realise their self esteem. \nA woman is expected to care her family from her young age to death; with marriage she plays dual roles\, lives prejudiced life\, falls prey to man’s lust but dedicate herself to family and in-laws. A woman symbolises giving\, sacrifice\, tolerance and all feminine virtues still facing cradle to grave discrimination.” \nSpeaking at the event\, Mr. Naresh Chaudhary\, Chief Operating Officer\, Smile Foundation\, said “Smile Foundation stands by half of the Indian population (women) that still in 21st century is struggling to live with pride and dignity. Through International Women’s Day we reiterate our firm belief in women power and strongly feel that we shall strive hard to achieve the status of a developed community unless we respect them at par.” \nPuppets have been used for teaching everything from stories of medieval kings to HIV/AIDS and in the digital age too such art forms have not lost its relevance as an expression to mobilise the society. Smile Foundation through its Swabhiman programme enables girls and women to realise their inner potential in every sphere-be it home\, workplace or community. Swabhiman\, is successfully working in 10 urban slums in Delhi and has created a line of leaders to spread the message of women self respect and empowerment. \n‘Kathputli or Puppet’\, is what the girl child lands up being as she plays different roles in life. From womb to tomb\, the girl child is nothing more than a puppet in the hands of one or the other. The first expression that a child learns is\, ‘Maa’ but as she grows up with self identity\, the respect for the gender gets in oblivion. Smile Foundation aims to sensitise privileged citizens to educate\, heal\, empower and honour the so called ‘fairer sex’ through a puppet show\, as the most beautiful and entertaining expression of art to symbolise the varied facets of women. \nMain Ek Katputli Hoon\nShe lives or dies in womb\, is something that society decides.\nShe gives up education because her family needs to live.\nShe marries early because her family wants to rid off the burden.\nShe serves herself the last because her family needs to eat.\nShe bears child because she is supposed to grow the family tree.\nShe nurtures family because she is an inspiration for sacrifice. \nAbout Swabhiman: \nSwabhiman\, meaning self-respect in Hindi\, is a programme from Smile Foundation which endeavours to empower adolescent girls and women\, with focus on the underprivileged sections\, by generating awareness\, imparting self defence techniques\, inculcating a health seeking behaviour and providing specialized mobile healthcare for girls and women. At present\, this programme is covering more than 80\,000 population across various communities in Delhi. www.swabhimanindia.net

SUMMARY:Dance Dance - Dhamaka
DESCRIPTION:A non-descript village in a backward and obscure district of Orissa State with majority of people barely managing to make their ends meet . . . Sounds ‘Harsh’ and ‘Exaggerated’? \nBUT\, this is the real story of village ‘Sirish’ in Dist. Balangir of Orissa where Jan Sevak Sangha\, a non-profit providing non-formal education to underprivileged children is located. Raising funds in an area like this appears unbelievable. \nHowever\, despite odds\, Jan Sevak Sangha organized a ‘Dance Dance’ – DHAMAKA (Explosive entertainer) that brought together not only the people of village Sirish but also people from neighbouring villages to mobilize funds for Jan Sevak Sangha by buying tickets for the show. \n500 villagers attended the charity show. Senior district level government officials and local politicians also joined in to express their solidarity with the cause. Going a step further\, Smile Foundation pitched in to match up the total funds raised to enhance the impact.

SUMMARY:Teachers Training Programme
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation is organizing a Teachers Training Programme to hone the skills of the teachers working in various grassroots level organizations being supported by it. The two-day-long training programme being held on May 26 & 27\, 2009 at the Smile Foundation head office aims at enlightening the teachers on various aspects of child psychology\, effective usage of innovative teaching & learning materials\, and avoidance of teaching methods that disinterests the students. \nSmile Foundation strongly believes that all problems related to societal development be it poverty\, unemployment or poor health care services can be addressed at the corridors of education. Since its inception in 2002\, Smile Foundation has been focusing on universal education through its Mission Education programme. \nThe education scenario in India is quite complex. And so despite the efforts of many grassroots organisations\, the poor and needy are still deprived of basic education. Firstly\, due to low salaries\, there is lack of rightly qualified and trained teachers employed by the development organizations. Secondly\, the parents of children coming to these organizations are unaware and ignorant about the importance of education. As a result\, the school drop out rate is very high. This also impacts the overall annual performance of a development organization adversely\, defeating the very purpose for which it is functioning. \nPoor Schools TeachersThe Mission Education programme of Smile Foundation aims at strengthening the grassroots level development organizations working in the field of education by providing them the right impetus. Smile Foundation aims at enhancing the quality of education being imparted by the development organisations. It should hold the interest of the children as well as their parents. The teachers need to be rightly trained and have sufficient skill to make the teaching content and process interesting. \nSmile Foundation has decided to organise teachers’ training programmes on regular intervals and thus improve the quality of education imparted under its Mission Education projects across the country. The on-going training programme is the first step in this direction.

SUMMARY:Smile Foundation voices 'Beti bhi apni hai' on World Population Day
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation in collaboration with Population Foundation of India\, organised a ‘Walkathon’ to accelerate the efforts to bring pride and dignity to girl child and women. Chief Guest Magsaysay Awardee Dr. Kiran Bedi (IPS)\, flagged off the walkathon. Akshat Chopra\, child artist and winner of National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement in Performing Arts was the special guest. \nAbout 150 adolescent girls and boys of Smile Foundation walked from Tolstoy Marg to Jantar Mantar lane with flags and banners saying\, ‘Beti bhi apni hai’. \nThe ‘Walkathon’ was followed by a street play and poster making by children at Jantar Mantar. \nThe Walkathon was organised to celebrate World Population Day 2009\, under the banner of Swabhiman\, the programme by Smile Foundation for health and empowerment of girl child and women. \nAppreciating Smile Foundation’s effort in organising the Walkathon\, Dr. Kiran Bedi said\, “Such endeavours help bridge the gender gap by spreading awareness about the rights and importance of girl child and women.” \n“It is sad that a daughter is considered a liability by the parents. But the reality is that even sons are often forced to leave far off from their parents because of professional or personal reasons. A daughter’s emotional bonding with her parents remains for ever. Daughters are equally capable and so we should not differentiate between a girl child and a boy\,” she added. \nSince 1989 when World Population Day was instituted\, UN has authorised the event as a vehicle to build awareness about population issues and the impact they have on development. The walkathon was an initiative to sensitise people about gender equality and give equal opportunity to girls and women. Reproductive health and gender issues are both critical determinants of population dynamics. A woman ignorant of her reproductive rights hardly has any say in making decisions to plan a family. Hence she is forced to sacrifice her daughters before birth. \nSpeaking on the occasion\, Child artist Akshat Chopra said\, “Beti bhi apni hai. It is high time people realise the importance of a girl child or else they would be in severe loss\, and I don’t think anyone would like to be at loss.” \n‘Sun lo Pukar’\, a street play presented by the volunteers of Swabhiman programme pulled a large audience. The group reiterated the saying\, ‘Beti ko pyar do aur do adhikar’. \nThe event also saw the creative imagination and sensitivity of adolescent underprivileged children during the poster making. The children made marvellous paintings on issues related to girl child\, thus supporting the theme of the Walkathon ‘Beti bhi apni hai’ through varied colours and ideas.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Girl Child week
DESCRIPTION:Workshops to build the livelihood skills of the underprivileged girl children and women\, and street play performances are the highlights this year. \nCapacity building of victimised and underprivileged girls marked the Girl Child week celebrations by Smile Foundation this year too. A series of street plays and skill building workshops were organised throughout the city sensitizing people about the plight of girl child and motivating them to be a part of the development process. \nLast year\, Smile Foundation for the first time organised a street play workshop under Swabhiman\, a health and empowerment programme for girl child and women. The workshop was held at Neb Sarai\, a Swabhiman Intervention area. \nToday\, Smile Foundation has a full-fledged street play group\, with at least 45 performances held at Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)\, Delhi Haat\, DAV College and 10 urban slums (Nut Colony and Ambedkar Colony in Chhatarpur\, Kumhar Basti and Harijan Basti and Gali number 1 to 4 in Neb Sarai\, New Ashok Nagar\, Shashi Garden (Mayur Vihar)\, Indira Camp and Valmiki Camp in Begumpur and Sriram J. J. camp) of Delhi to its credit. \nThrough the street play performances\, a total of 100\,000 privileged and underprivileged mass including about 80\,000 women were sensitized about the significance of family planning and various reproductive health issues including immunization\, early registration\, condom promotion\, HIVAIDS\, safe motherhood\, female foeticide etc. \nWatch these community girls perform and it would be difficult for you to distinguish between a professional street play group and these adolescent slum dwellers. \nContinuing with the legacy\, this year too Smile Foundation organised a series of street plays at different locations of the city. Along with this\, are several skill building workshops organised to provide livelihood skills to victimised and underprivileged girls. The workshop which started on September 19 ended on September 25. \nThe week long workshop included making of various artifacts like paper bags\, decorated pots\, anklets\, necklaces\, etc. The girls exhibited their artifacts at Lady Sriram College on September 19 and Gargi College on September 23 where the articles sell like hot cakes. “Ab hum apna khud ka kaam shuru kar sakte hain (Now we can start our own work)\,” says Snehalata\, a resident of New Ashok Nagar.
