DESCRIPTION:Dedicated to the welfare of women and the girl child\, Swabhiman organized a special health camp for women\, adolescent girls and children at the Hegganahalli and Ramanna Badavane settlements in Bengaluru\, Karnataka. 10 expecting mothers could avail the facility of check-ups and one-on-one counseling sessions. The health camp\, facilitated by a team of medical professionals\, Swabhiman Health Volunteers (SHVs) and Community Health Educators (CHEs)\, provided preventive and curative health services as well as free medicines to the beneficiaries. The community women were also made aware of hygienic practices and healthy eating habits that they should adopt in their daily lives\, and subsequently in their families’ routine.

This positive development occurred when a marked increase was recorded in the hemoglobin levels of women who had availed of the ANC/PNC services at Smile on Wheels. The women are also encouraged to opt for institutional deliveries and imbibe a health seeking behavior in their children from the very beginning.

SUMMARY:Men Learn the importance of Women Empowerment
DESCRIPTION:Dedicated to the welfare of women and the girl child\, Smile Foundation’s Swabhiman programme a series of plays were organized across the slum clusters of Delhi to sensitize the communities on the role of men and boys in the empowerment of women and the girl child. Two plays were organized in Malviya Nagar and Dhaula Kuan\, with a focus on the vital issue of reproductive and child health. The people were not only made aware about the issue but also explained how a change in the behavioural attitude of the male members of family and community can help women and children have improved access to healthcare services. The audience was captivated and engaged throughout the play and they also got encouraging response to their questions. Volunteers from Sugandaya Natya Manch joined hands with the Swabhiman team in conducting the plays.

SUMMARY:Street play on HIV AIDS at Thigalarapalya in Bengaluru
DESCRIPTION:Over 150 people gathered at Thigalarapalya in Bengaluru attended an awareness session cum street play on HIV AIDS. Actors from the popular tele-serial Kalashibira — Ms. Udhayashree\, Mr. Ganesh\, Mr. Vishnu and Mr. Shivanna\, joined hands with the Swabhiman team in sensitizing the community. The session focused on dispelling misconceptions about HIV AIDS\, while also explaining the preventive measures\, through the medium of one act plays and songs. The session was informative and engaging\, and received appreciation and applause from the crowd at the end. Many in the audience raised important questions that were answered immediately by the team.

SUMMARY:Workshop on reproductive and maternal health conducted in Heganahalli slum
DESCRIPTION:A workshop on reproductive and maternal health in the Heganahalli slum cluster saw the active participation of women and girls alike. Ms. Udayshree\, from the Karnatak State Council for Child Welfare\, joined the Swabhiman team in Bengaluru to conduct the workshop. The workshop was started by a discussion on the changes that take place in a woman’s body from the age of 11 to 55 years. The participants were kept engaged by frequent question answer session. Sources of common infections and high risk areas according to various age groups\, the precautions needed to take for them and individual problems of the individuals were also discussed. Maternal health issues\, dietary needs of expecting and lactating mothers were also some of the topics discussed. A demo diet chart was prepared\, with active involvement of the participants\, who also volunteered to share the same with other women from the community.

SUMMARY:J.H. Tarapore School invites Smile Foundation to "Recognition Night"
DESCRIPTION:J.H.Tarapore School of Jamshedpur invited Smile Foundation to their annual programme ‘Recognition Night’ of the year 2015. J.H. Tarapore has been associated with Smile Foundation for a long time now. \nOn behalf of Smile Foundation\, Child for Child (CFC) representative Ms. Priyanka Garai attended the programme. The Chairperson Mr. Bailey Bodhanwala and his wife Mrs. Rubina Bodhanwala (Principal of Little Hearts School\, Jamshedpur) were also present on the occasion. \nThe programme started with the school anthem and a special speech by a student on “International Year of Light”. This was followed by musical performances of the students. The successful students of 2013-14 were all felicitated by the school\, along with the students who had done extra ordinarily well in co-curricular activities.

SUMMARY:A day out for the ladies
DESCRIPTION:34 Swabhiman Scholars\, accompanied by their mentors namely\, four Community Health Educators (CHEs)\, went for a day out to explore some major landmarks of Delhi\, including Raj Ghat and Nehru Memorial Museum\, Library and Nehru Planetarium. These girls have received a merit-based scholarship under the Swabhiman programme\, to complete their education. Many of them have also become health volunteers and health educators within their community and spread awareness among their peers\, spearheading the movement of change. The trip was both an educative and thrilling one.

SUMMARY:Value Education for school students in Delhi
DESCRIPTION:Students of Vinay Nagar Bengali School and Kendriya Vidyalaya Dwarka attended value education workshops conducted by Smile Foundation under its Child for Child (CFC) programme. \nBoth the sessions were very interactive with the students participating throughout the workshop and sharing their own experiences and suggestions\, even as CFC representatives taught them the significance of values and responsibility in their lives. \nSmile Foundation visits various privileged schools across India and conducts engaging sessions for the young minds\, under CFC programme. Children are sensitized in various causes\, value systems and are ushered to realize their importance in growing up as responsible citizens of the country.
