SUMMARY:Dr. Tarita Shankar becomes Goodwill Ambassador for Smile Foundation in Pune
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation announced Dr. Tarita Shankar\, Chairperson\, Indira Group of Institutes\, as its Goodwill Ambassador in Pune\, to support the cause of education for girl children. Continuing with her ongoing contribution for the education of underprivileged children\, she has extended support towards the education of 75 girl children this year. \nSpeaking about this association on her birthday\, she said\, “When so many children are born unequal and are languishing silently\, it becomes our moral duty to put a smile on their face. It’s my endeavor in life that if I want a peaceful sleep at night\, I have to help others sleep peacefully without worry too. Giving is the essence of a good life. \nOn my birthday if I can motivate more people to come forward and support the worthy cause of sending every girl child to school through Smile Foundation\, I would consider this as the best gift ever in my life.” \nSmile foundation believes that education is the most effective tool to help the less privileged children\, particularly girls\, come out of the vicious cycle of poverty and suffering\, and transform them into an empowered next generation. By involving the privileged section of the society proactively in the process of child development\, it aims to bring sustainable change in the lives of underprivileged children.

SUMMARY:Riding to pave the road for children’s education
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation in association with Seven Islands HOG (Harley Owners Group) organized a Harley ride to support the cause of children’s education. Termed ‘Miles for Smiles’\, the initiative sought to highlight the plight of millions of children forced into child labour and to spread awareness about importance of education amongst the most deserving children. \nThe event was flagged off from Bandra\, Mumbai around 6:00 am. Around 50 Harley owners from the Seven Islands H.O.G. extended their support by riding 100 kms to Lonavala during this event. Proceeds from the ride will benefit the children under Smile Foundation’s Mission Education programme. \nAmeya Kapnadak\, Assistant Director\, Seven Islands H.O.G. Chapter\, said\, “It is quite ironic\, actually. A couple of days from now\, the world celebrates the International Labor Day as a turning point in worker rights. And here in India\, we see rampant child labor – right from maids in our homes to farm and factory workers. So we said let’s do our bit to put these kids where they belong – in schools.” \n“Education is the most effective tool that can help the less privileged children come out of the vicious cycle of poverty and suffering\, and transform into an empowered next generation. By involving the privileged section of the society proactively in the process of child development\, we aim to bring real and permanent change in the lives of the most deserving children\,” said Mr. Vikram Singh Verma\, Chief Operating Officer\, Smile Foundation.

SUMMARY:Say NO to Child Labour\, Say YES to school
DESCRIPTION:A Sensitization Campaign against Child Labour by Smile Foundation \nMumbai: On the eve of World Labour Day\, Smile Foundation\, a national level development organisation organised a sensitizing campaign at major locations like bus stations and public utility spaces to sensitize the privileged people and send an appeal to empower underprivileged children through education. Children and volunteers in Nagpur\, Mumbai\, Bhavnagar and Goa took out rallies\, recited slogans\, hoisted placards and banners to make people aware of the cause. \nAlthough June 12th is celebrated as Anti-child Labour Day\, Smile Foundation feels that when the attention of the whole world is focused on May 1st which is celebrated as Labour Day\, there could be no occasion to raise the issue of childhood\, and future\, being wasted in the form of child labour. \nStatistics reveal that India has 17 million child workers\, the highest in the world owing to poverty\, lack of equipped schools and growth of informal economy. Over half of the working children (54%) are in agriculture\, and most others are employed either in construction (15.5%) or in household work (18%). About 5% are in manufacturing jobs\, and the remaining (about 8%) are scattered across other forms of employment. Lack of awareness about the basic rights of a child leads to easy violation of laws meant to protect and empower children. Today Smile Foundation children and volunteers campaigned to fight against the practice of child labour and advocated for sending children to school. \n“Smile Foundation feels that there is no better tool\, but education to end child labour in the country and work towards providing basic school education to the less privileged children in the country. Through this sensitization effort\, Smile Foundation wants to create awareness on the vulnerability of the underprivileged children in our society. Smile Foundation would like to appeal to the privileged individuals – Say NO to Child Labour\, Say YES to School\,” said Mr. Suryakant Narvekar\, Smile Foundation’s Regional Head – West (CFC). \nOther Press Releases \nMission Education\nKashmir Floor Relief\nIITians Run For Mission Education\nPankaj Advani Celebration\nCook for a Smile – with Chef Vikas Khanna\nProtecting Children\nHospital on Wheels\nBengaluru FC teams up with smile\nCook for Smile 2014\nHogs Riding\nChild Labour Day\nRamp for Champs – mumbai\nChild Education Begins\nEnabling & Empowering
