SUMMARY:Special Health Camps for casual and daily wage labour across India
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation conducted a series of specialized health camps exclusively for casual/daily wage labourers and workers from unorganized sectors across 26 locations in Andhra Pradesh\, Maharashtra\, Delhi\, Uttar Pradesh\, Haryana\, Punjab\, Jammu & Kashmir\, West Bengal\, Jharkhand\, Bihar and Rajasthan. \nA casual labourer must earn a day’s wage to feed his family. Similar workers and their children and families form a sizeable portion of the beneficiaries through both Smile Health Camp and Smile on Wheels models of Smile Foundation. However\, a series of specialized camps in various belts across India was conducted focusing specifically on this particular section of the beneficiaries. \nMultiple camps were conducted at Ahmednagar\, Mumbai\, Ratnagir and Solapur in Maharashtra; Titupati and Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh; Kolkata in West Bengal; Ghaziabad and Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh; Delhi; Gurgaon and Ambala in Haryana; Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh; Ludhiana and Jalandhar in Punjab; Muzaffarpur in Bihar; Jamshedpur and Ranchi in Jharkhand; Jaipur\, Jodhpur and Udaipur in Rajasthan; and Jammu (J&K) in the months of February\, March and April. \nBesides providing primary health care and promoting health seeking behaviour\, the beneficiaries were oriented on numerous health hazards and how to take precaution while taking up various hazardous jobs. In addition\, counselling and referral services\, health supplements such as fruits\, packed juice\, cakes\, biscuits and Chyawanprash etc. are being made available free of cost. \nKansai Nerolac Paints Ltd. supported Smile Foundation for this special series of health camps.

SUMMARY:Footballer Robin Singh takes up the cause of Women Empowerment
DESCRIPTION:Footballer Robin Singh celebrated the spirit of Indian women in Bangalore\, on the eve of International Women’s Day. He joined fifteen spirited girls of Smile Foundation who were striving to make an identity of their own although they had come from difficult backgrounds. \nRobin was enthralled to join the cause. “We must enable the women in our society to understand their real worth and equip them with the power of equality. I feel that male involvement is imperative in women empowerment. All these girls symbolize the spirit of ‘living your dream’ as they have got the right platform and support. I wish them the very best and I hope they become a force to reckon with\,” said Robin Singh\, the ace forward of Bengaluru FC. \nAll the girls were from Smile Twin e-Learning Programme (STeP) SAMA centre in Bangalore. 70 girls are living their dreams at this all-girls centre. \nCommenting on this occasion Mr. Vikram Singh Verma\, COO\, Smile Foundation said\, “Smile Foundation strongly believes that when you empower women\, a whole generation is empowered. We have a long way to go in this direction and we can only achieve it by involving all sections of the civil society.” He added\, “I would like to thank Mr. Robin Singh who came forward and supported the cause. I believe that we all can inspire changes in our own way this Women’s Day.”

SUMMARY:Celebrating the Spirit of Womanhood
DESCRIPTION:More than 100 women and girls from Sriram J.J. Camp\, near Dhaula Kuan in Delhi\, came together to celebrate International Women’s Day. These women\, coming from underprivileged families and living on the fringes of society\, have been gradually moving towards a silent but resolute change\, by becoming a part of Smile Foundation’s Swabhiman programme. \nThe celebration began with an interactive and informative session where the participants were made aware about significant issues pertaining to their reproductive and menstrual health. This was followed by a group activity where each group was given craft material and asked to create something innovative about women empowerment. Later\, all the works of art were discussed and appreciated openly. \nThe last session was motivational to the core in which stories of inspirational women figures from daily life were showcased. As recognition of womenhood\, the women and girls were asked to mark a canvas with their hands and pink bangles were distributed among them. The celebration ended with a roar that women should participate equally whether in home or at local and national platforms.

SUMMARY:Women and girls in Chhattarpur cultivate their Garden of Hope
DESCRIPTION:Not-so-easy living conditions\, scarcity of water and rented houses could not stop women of Chhattarpur village on the southern fringe of Delhi\, from sowing plants and nurturing gardens in their homes. The inspiration came from the initiative “The Garden of Hope and Sowing”\, organised by Navdanya Trust\, under Smile Foundation’s Swabhiman programme. \nThe workshop began with seeds being distributed among 40 adolescent girls and women. The participants were made aware about the importance of organic food\, followed by a group discussion in which ideas were invited for an ideal garden and interesting topics related to food and community. Thereafter\, a sowing session was held\, during which the women and girls learnt something new while having fun and strengthening their community bonding. \nThe women were very interested and curious about the sessions. They also ended the interactive session with another fun activity – by putting their thoughts on paper artistically through drawings and presenting them in groups.

By involving the privileged section of the society proactively in the process of child development\, we aim to bring real and permanent change in the lives of the most deserving children\,” said Mr. Vikram Singh Verma\, Chief Operating Officer\, Smile Foundation.
