SUMMARY:Multi-disciplinary mega health camp in Bhilwada
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation organized the 9th annual multi-disciplinary free mega health camp was in Bhilwara district of rural Rajasthan. Smile has been organizing this mega health camp for the past seven years in association with the Jain Sabha Women’s Wing. This mega health camp provides free medical facilities to the poor people with a motive of bringing finest healthcare facilities to the underprivileged living in the vicinity of Shahpura in Bhilawada. There are 100 villages in the vicinity with a population of over 20\,000 who are catered to by this health camp every year. The area has only one government dispensary and in case of critical medical attention\, a patient has to be taken to Bhilwara for further treatment. Every year\, thousands of people visit this health camp and over 1000 people avail the services. The health camp is a boon for the villagers who do not have access to proper healthcare service. \nThis is a multi-specialty camp offering multi-disciplinary health care services including investigative and surgical interventions by a dedicated team of medical experts. More than 100 doctors and paramedical staff specialized in surgery\, ophthalmology\, gynaecology\, orthopaedics\, medicine\, E.N.T\, anaesthesia\, radiology\, paediatrics and pathology work together to provide voluntary service at the camp. Along with free diagnosis and medical treatmensts\, beneficiaries are also provided free food\, stay and transportation at the camp. \nThis year the camp saw a total number of 5534 beneficiaries. Utensils and blankets were also distributed to the patients this year.

SUMMARY:Visit to Apne Aap SteP centre
DESCRIPTION:A visit from Sooch Foundation representing Asset Foundation was faclilitated by Smile on 15th September 2011. The newly established STeP centre with the partner organisation Apne Aap focusses on special community to target beneficiaries from the vulnerable group and children of Commercial Sex Wrokers in the particular Community. \nCurrently\, 26 girls from vulnerable group are being trained at the STeP centre from last two months and the process to establish several such sub-centres in the nearby community is under process. During the visit a brief introductory session was done with the students followed by the future plans of the girls. Lot of girls specifically mentioned that the program has made them understand that learning computers is not difficult now a days. ” The fact that this center is located very close to our home\, we really feel that this 6 month program would bring about positive changes in our lives\,” added Poonam Kumari who has passed Class XII and wants to become a Computer Trainer. \nThe visitors from Texas\, US were overwhelmed to the response from all the girls who have completed Basic Word & Paint Skills on Computer. ” They are really working hard to prove themsleves in the outer world\,” Said Ms. Caroline \, one of the visitor from Sooch Foundation. The visit concluded after a discussion with the instructors and coordinators at the center to give the visitors a glimpse about the operational aspect of the program.

DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation organized a special screening of I am Kalam for HUDCO and its employees. This is one of the initial steps taken by Smile to sensitize the masses about the cause of Sending Every Child to School. 400 employees of HUDCO along with their CMD\, Mr. VP Balingar was present for the screening and appreciated the film\, its lead cast for their wonderful performances and Smile Foundation for its great initiative. \nAfter a very successful nationwide theatrical release\, Smile Foundation is now ready to launch I am Kalam for its primary objective – sensitization of the privileged masses about the plight of the needy\, and sensitization of the underprivileged masses about their own rights. As one of the first steps towards this objective\, Smile Foundation is trying to partner with organizations and alliances to try and reach out to maximum number of people. \nI am Kalam has come to be the most critically acclaimed film of the year so far\, and as intended has been successful in entertaining and simultaneously sensitizing the people. However the release being urban population centric\, the film has so far reached only metro\, tier 1 and 2 cities. As the next step Smile Foundation now\, through its association with a network of 2500 schools\, 100 colleges\, 50 apex management and technical institutes\, 75 corporates and 160 NGOs has already started taking the film to the rural interiors too\, in order to sensitize individuals\, authorities\, groups and communities at all levels.

Speaking on the special screening\, Sameer Ganapathy\, Business Head\, UTV Movies said\, “Havai Dada is a movie that revolves around a little girl and her struggles to fulfill a dream and we wanted to share this experience with the kids of Smile Foundation. It’s a story that encourages the kids to emerge stronger from their struggles and motivates them to pursue their dreams.” \n“It was a wonderful experience to watch the film with the kids of Smile Foundation. Their reactions to the film were overwhelming and we had a truly enjoyable time together.” said Anupam Kher.

SUMMARY:Butterfly Raining for Smile
DESCRIPTION:Andpersand magazine\, renowned artist Seema Kohli and Le Meridian hotel came together in order to present a unique event “Butterfly Rain”. This was an innovative fundraising event by the children\, for the children and of the children. Smile Foundation was honoured as the charity partner for this unique event and has received part of the funds raised from the event. \nUnder the tutelage of artists Seema Kohli\, ten children from across the country painted their dream butterflies. These butterflies were added to the artist’s collection of 100 exquisite hand-painted butterflies embellished with 1500 carat of precious gems. The whole collection was further auctioned for raising funds for the education of underprivileged children. \nAmong the ten children also were the lead cast of Smile Foundation’s I am Kalam\, Harsh Mayar and Husaan Saad\, who got the opportunity to work closely with Seema Kolhi in making the butterflies. \nSpeaking about the selection of the theme for the event artist Seema Kohli says “Butterflies always surrounded our home \, and as a child I spent my days chasing after them. I thought of them constantly\, dreamt of them\, studied them and even tried to take them up as a profession. And then one day they disappeared. I have been searching ever since. The great tragedy of our planet is played out in the little tragedy of the butterflies.”

The children beneficiaries of Smile Foundation equally participated in this programme. \nAt the end of the event the students and faculty expressed their pleasure of being able to do something worthwhile for the needy and committed to associate with Smile Foundation for more such initiatives.

DESCRIPTION:The French Embassy and Alliance Francaise have partnered with Smile Foundation to support the cause of Sending Every Child to School. SUMMARY:Inauguration of new STeP in jaipur
DESCRIPTION:October 17\, 2011\, proved to be a historic day for the under privileged youth living in urban\, sub-urban and rural areas of Jaipur. The occasion was the inauguration of the Smile Twin E-learning Programme in the city under joint auspices of Smile Foundation\, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Prayatn Sanstha. The event was joined by Mr. H. N. Sahay \, Director operations from Smile Foundation\, New Delhi along with several senior officials from HPCL travelling from different part of the country. \nThe STeP programme in Jaipur is being supported by the Corporate Social Responsibility wing of the HPCL which is an enterprise of Government of India and is one of Fortune 500 companies of the world. Participation of 4 Deputy General Managers and several other officials in the brief ceremony reflects the interest which is being taken by the wing in the programme. The event was attended by at least 70 youth and community representatives. \nDuring the entire event\, valuable addresses on the need and effectiveness of STeP program were delivered by Mr. H.N. Sahay along with the officials from HPCL which was hosted by Executive director of Prayatn Sanstha\, Mr. Manish. The conclusion of the event was followed by the ribbon cutting at the new STeP center by the chief guest from HPCL Mr. K. Srinivas and vote of thanks to the participants by Mr. Malay \, the Chief Executive from Prayatn Sanstha.

DESCRIPTION:On its way to benefit more and more unreached and deprived population with healthcare services Smile Foundation launched its 12th Smile on Wheels – a national level mobile hospital programme\, on November 11\, 2011. This project will cover a population of 48\,000 in the slums of Faridabad in Delhi NCR. The project is being implemented by Able Charities. \nMaximum inhabitants of this slum are daily wage earners\, and neglect visiting doctors despite being ill\, just because that would cost them a day’s wage. This mobile hospital will give all the preventive\, curative\, promotive and referral medical services at the doorstep of the slum dwellers of Faridabad. It will provide finest medical services to those that either cannot afford medical treatment or ignore it because of various reasons. \nFor the inauguration\, Member of the Legislative Assembly of Faridabad Shri Anand Koushik was invited as the chief guest. Shri Ashok Arora\, the Mayor of Faridabad\, Dr.Vimal Mehta\, President of K.L Mehta Dayanad College for Women and renowned social activist Shri B.R Ojha were the guests of honour. \nAcknowledging this initiative Shri Anand Koushik\, said\, “It is appreciable that\, Smile Foundation is doing such a noble job. This is for the first time in Faridabad that a mobile hospital is reaching the doorstep of the people for providing the much needed healthcare services” He thanked Smile Foundation for choosing to serving the people of Faridabad. This film festival was organised by The Goethe-Institute and Max Mueller Bhavan-Bangalore\, under the motto of: ‘Two nations – a single screen’. The Festival is being held in collaboration with The Bavarian State Government\, the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern\, Germany and Suchitra Film Society\, Bangalore. And\, showcased 10 German and 10 Indian feature films under the banner of Germany & India 2011–12 Infinite Opportunities. \nThe objective of the screenings was to showcase the nature of art in German and Indian cinema. The screening of the films included Kannada & children films. This festival provided a platform to cineastes and members of the film industries to interact and network. Many German and Indian high- profile film delegates\, including directors\, producers and casts\, attended the Film Festival. \nThe critically acclaimed film “I am Kalam” produced by Smile Foundation\, was selected as one of the best 10 films from India. The actor commenced his ambassadorship by supporting the education of 50 beneficiaries of Smile Foundation as his individual social responsibility. A day before the main event Rajeev personally visited the educational projects of Smile Foundation\, to spend time and interact with the kids. The children were thrilled with Rajiv’s presence. The actor interacted and motivated the kids to continue their studies and achieve what they aspire to be. Rajeev was very happy to see the confidence of the children\, and congratulated Co-Founder and Executive Trustee of Smile Foundation – Mr. Santanu Mishra for doing this great job. \nAlong with Rajeev Khandelwal\, corporate like Air France\, Fasttrax Restaurant\, Mirch Media\, and colleges like IIT Delhi\, Delhi School of Professional Studies and Research (DSPSR) and SRM University also supported Smile Foundation in the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon. This was the second time when Smile Foundation participated in the marathon with an aim to sensitize maximum number of people for the cause of education. Reebok India also associated with Smile Foundation for Airtel Delhi Half Marathon and provided fitness gear for the event. \nRajeev Khandelwal supported Smile Foundation to influence more and more people to bring the needed change in the lives of underprivileged children. The team had come to know about the unique delivery model of Smile on Wheels and wanted to find out the impact that Smile on Wheels programme is making. \nThe team was taken to Rangpuri kacchi basti\, New Delhi – one of the project centres of the programme. The ECU team spent some time in the mobile hospital to see the work process. They also interacted with the patients. The team made a tour of the whole community and interacted with the slum dwellers there. The ECU students also distributed chocolates among the children beneficiaries of Rangpuri Basti. \nThe visit turned out to be very successful. The ECU team appreciated and congratulated SOW team for their work towards the community.

SUMMARY:HIV/AIDS Eradication chain initiative from Smile Foundation
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of World Aids Day\, December 1\, 2011 Smile Foundation’s Girl Child and Women Empowerment initiative\, Swabhiman\, organised an HIV/ Aids eradication campaign in the Shri Ram J.J. Camp in Delhi. This campaign was conducted with the support from Population Foundation of India (PFI) and Lotus Herbal. The aim of the camp was to sensitize the community dwellers about the cause and cure of HIV/AIDS. Community women & adolescent girls and boys joined Swabhiman health volunteers in sensitizing the community dwellers. \nProf. Mohini Bhattacharya\, Director\, National Institute of Health and Family Welfare graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Ms. Parul from PFI and Dr. Ira\, Project Director of Health & Care were also present as special guests. Various sensitizing activities like poster making\, slogan writing and street plays designed to sensitize whole community including women\, men\, adolescent girls and boys towards the causes and prevention of HIV/ AIDS. \nThe guests of honors also had some healthy discussion with the community women and adolescent girls about Aids Eradication. The sensitized women and girl child also gave their opinions in the formation of eradication process. \nThe whole event turned out to be very successful in terms of the sensitizing the community dwellers and also building an invaluable relationship with the corporate partners. \nCounselors having a counselling session with the Swabhiman beneficiaries \nPopulation Foundation of India (PFI) is a national non-government organization at the forefront of policy advocacy and research on population issues in the country. SUMMARY:Sensitizing health camp by Smile Foundation for the truck drivers on the occasion of World AIDS Day
DESCRIPTION:“We are blessed with kind people like you\, who provide everything free of cost to us and who take care of our health.” – stated one of the beneficiaries benefitted from the health care camp \,Smile Foundation conducted for the truck drivers and their helpers at Transport Nagar- GT Karnal Road\, Delhi under their Smile on Wheels programme. \nDecember 1\, 2011\, On the occasion of World AIDS Day\, Smile Foundation sensitized several truck drivers about the HIV/ AIDS problems. The main objective of the camp was to educate “Uneducated and Underprivileged Truck Drivers and Their Helpers about HIV/AIDS Problems”. \nThe event was conducted at the highway where there is a big footfall of truck drivers. The event started with a screening of a sensitizing A/V about the prevention and advocacy on AIDS. The doctors also counseled the beneficiaries about the AIDS preventive measures. And also distributed male contraceptives with informative leaflets and pamphlets. \nBesides a sensitizing event an eye check-up camp was also conducted for the participating beneficiaries. About 192 participants participated in the event. 110 patients were examined in the general health check up camp and were given free medicines and contraceptives; 80 patients were attended in the eye check up camp and were given free spectacles who were detected with weak eye sides. \nThe event was a big success. Each and every beneficiary benefited\, acknowledged Smile Foundation’s efforts to sensitize the urban and rural group that travels across the country.
