SUMMARY:I am Kalam at 40th Giffoini Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:40th Giffoini Film Festival\, Europe’s largest children’s film festival\, had invited ‘I am Kalam’\, the feature film produced by Smile Foundation\, to compete in the 10+ elements category – Gryphon Award. The film festival was held in the provincial town of Giffoni Valle Piana\, in South-west Italy\, between July 18 and 23\, 2010. \nGiffoni Film Festival was established in 1971 to promote and develop cinema for young people\, elevating it from the marginal position it had\, back in those days. What makes its concept unique is its jury comprising exclusively of young people. Over the years the number of jurors has out grown 3000 people coming from over 44 different countries embracing all the continents. The age of jurors ranges from 3 to 17 and they are placed into four official competitive sections according to their age group. The jurors view\, assess\, discuss about and vote for films in the sections. \n‘I am Kalam’ was included in the Elements + 10 category dedicated to jurors aged between 10 to 12 years. \n‘I am Kalam’ was world premiered at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival in May 2010. DESCRIPTION:HCL conducted a special interview training session for STeP students at the AROH centre in Noida. The session was conducted by HCL employees for 3 hours\, where they explained the young boys and girls of STeP about the pre-requisites of answering an interview well. \nThe employees explained that a candidate’s professionalism and performance in the interview are considered the most important in the hiring procedure. The students were also briefed about the change in job seeking trends in the current scenario and the ways to deal with them. \nThe session began with a round of formal introduction. This was followed by a detailed slide presentation of how to best attempt an interview. There were details training the students how to be dressed appropriately and have the correct body language for interviews\, how to develop an effective resume and other dos and don’ts of interviews. A group discussion was also conducted on gate-crashing\, first impressions and overcoming hesitations. \nSince these students would soon be facing interviews on the completion of their STeP course\, a mock interview session was also conducted. The 3 hour long session came to an end with an open discussion of all career related doubts and queries. The STeP students discussed their career concerns with the HCL employees and were very happy with the counseling they were given and appreciate their efforts and contribution.

DESCRIPTION:A health camp was organized by Smile Foundation\, at Sanjay Gandhi JJ cluster at Chanakyapuri\, New Delhi on August 13\, 2010. This was organized in support of US Aid and the Population Foundation of India and was attended by over 350 people from the slums in the vicinity. \nThe US Ambassador to India\, H.E. Timothy J. Romer\, was present for the occasion along with his wife. He also assured that constant support from the US Aid team will be given to Smile Foundation for the organization of more such camps. As a gesture of his appreciation for this initiative of Smile\, His Excellency\, also participated in the camp and availed the health care services provided there. \nKeeping in mind the scale of event Smile Foundation had convened two of its mobile health vans – Smile on Wheels\, for the implementation of the camp. The two mobile hospitals of Smile on Wheels facilitated three doctors\, two coordinators\, one gynaecologist and one paramedical staff\, especially for the camp. Among the numerous services provided\, some of the mostly availed ones were medicines\, ECG facility\, X-Ray facility\, blood tests and sugar level tests. \nThe health camp was also supported by the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Govt. of National Capital Territory of Delhi. To promote immunization and exclusive breastfeeding of children\, a contest for the most healthy baby was also conducted along with the camp and winning prizes were given away by the US Ambassador.

Sharma – Principal Secretary of Health\, Govt. of Rajasthan. This is the 10th mobile hospital in the Smile on Wheels programme. With this new unit the programme will be covering a population of 8\,98\,667 in 126 slums and villages across India. \nSmile on Wheels is a community based self-sustainable heath delivery model. It will operate in Jaipur in association with Shikshit Rojgar Kendra Prabandhak Samiti (SRKPS).The project will be implemented in 22 slum areas of Jaipur district. The mobile hospital unit will visit 6 locations – Kalakar\, Bhatta\, Jagatpura\, Jhalana\, Bagrana and Idgah\, twice every week. \nThe unit will be covering 22\,400 households and a total population of over 1\,12\,000 in these 6 locations. For the remaining 16 slum areas\, a special health camp will be organised every Sunday. \nTalking on the role of public private partnerships to cater to the needs of the society\, Mr. Pabitra Banerjee\, General Manager – Programmes\, Smile Foundation said\, “The concept of public private partnership has really helped in facilitating health care services to the door steps of underprivileged communities. With the support of our partners\, our mission of making health care facilities accessible and affordable for the target communities across the country\, will turn into success. With more and more partners in this programme\, we can look forward to better health seeking behaviour in the country.” \nStating about their objective and partnership with Smile\, Mr. Ranjan Choudhary – Director\, SRKPS said “We have always focused on programmes and activities that deal with rural development\, educational upliftment\, social awareness\, welfare of women and children and better health facilities. Providing basic amenities of quality education and health services to the community is the prime objective of SRKPS and to meet this objective the organization is providing quality health services to the deprived community in many districts of Rajasthan. SUMMARY:IMI New Delhi associates with Smile Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation and International Management Institute (IMI)\, New Delhi came together\, for IMI’s annual marketing summit Srijan 2010. This summit is organised by Jagriti\, the social cell of IMI\, every year. a student driven body that provides a platform to the students of the college who have the desire to commit themselves for the welfare of the society and wants to add some value to it. Ever since its inception in 2008\, Jagriti has been involved in the handling of various NGO projects and organizing of events like b-school driven initiatives\, blood donation camps\, energy saving campaigns\, social awareness week\, NGO summits etc. \nThis year the summit was organized with a case study competition and was named Swashrit. The goal of Swashrit\, meaning self dependent or self-sustained\, was to understand and highlight the real issues faced by Smile Foundation in their mission of sensitizing the citizens and instilling in them a sense of responsibility and accountability towards the society so that they actively take part in the development process. \nThe response was overwhelming with Jagriti receiving 62 entries from the various major b-schools of the country including IIMs\, XLRI\, FMS\, MDI\, IIFT etc apart from the students of IMI themselves. Out of all the entries received\, 5 teams were shortlisted for the final round where they were invited to present the solutions they had come up with. The shortlisted teams were from XLRI Jamshedpur\, IIFT Kolkata\, JBIMS\, IIFT Delhi and IMI. The competition was evaluated by an eminent panel of judges from Smile. \nTeam ‘Avahaan’ from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS)\, Mumbai walked away with the first prize and a prize money of Rs. 8000\, while team ‘Anukalp’ from IMI came a close second\, winning a prize money of Rs. 5000. The team from JBIMS Mumbai’s team came up with the plan of capitalizing on social media\, introduction of ‘Be Human Points’\, introduction of Social Mobilizer Groups\, launching of campus ambassador programs etc to mobilize and motivate the citizens. The team from IMI shared their views about investing in civil society and civic engagement\, promoting citizen action for participatory democracy and development\, innovative local governance approaches for better developmental plans and strengthening civic engagement for multilateralism. \nTo bring the summit to a close\, Ms. Manju Singh from Smile Foundation addressed all the people on behalf of Smile Foundation. She shared her views on the presentations made\, the strategies proposed\, how b-school students can effectively contribute and about the various other issues faced by social organisations. Prizes were then given out. The event bears testimony to the fact that the application of business solutions to various social causes can be highly rewarding\, and the involvement of b-school students can result in the generation of highly innovative ideas and plans which can provide a new dimension to the work of the NGOs and social work in general.

DESCRIPTION:‘I am Kalam’ the feature film produced by Smile Foundation\, has won the Best Feature Film at the Lucas Film Festival. The award was announced by the Lucas jury in the award ceremony held on 10th September 2010 in Germany. Lucas is a 35 year old International Children’s Film Festival that presents sophisticated and promising productions aimed at children 4 to 12 years of age. This is an independently selected competition programme that consists of artistically and thematically valuable films to make foreign cultures understandable for children. \nThe film has also won the Don Quijote Prize of the Fédération Internationale des Ciné-Clubs (FICC). This international association was set up in 1947 in Cannes (France) among groups of film societies in countries throughout the world. Since 2004\, FICC gives out awards every year to one exemplary film competing in the Lucas Film Festival. \n‘I am Kalam’ has also been selected as a nomination at the prestigious National School Film Week and BFI London Film Festival and in 5 other honorable festivals for global cinema for the year – in the Children’s Feature Film category at the Asia-Pacific Screen Awards\, Oulu International Children’s and Youth Film Festival (Finland)\, Cinekid International Film Festival (Amsterdam)\, New York Children’s Film Festival and London Children’s Film Festival. \nThe plot of ‘I am Kalam’ revolves around the trials and tribulations that a small boy faces yearning for education. It summarizes a fairy tale treatment to the dreams of the protagonist\, Chhotu\, and how he dares to achieve them in spite of all the odds. The central plot of the film is in sync with the recently enforced RTE Act and stands for thousands of such aspiring children of the country. The film is a directorial debut of Nila Madhab Panda.

SUMMARY:8th Multidisciplinary Mega Health Camp at Bhilwada
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation in association with Jain Sabha Women’s Wing organised the 8th multidisciplinary free health camp at Shahpura in Bhilwara district of Rajasthan. The camp was inaugurated on September 17\, 2010. This camp is organized ever year to cater to the rural poor living in the vicinity of Shahpura and focuses on the health issues related primarily to children and women. \nThe health camp had a 500 make-shift bed hospital\, and provided free diagnosis\, medicines\, food\, accommodation and surgical care. More than 100 doctors and paramedical staff specialized in Surgery\, Ophthalmology\, Gynaecology\, Orthopaedics\, Medicine\, E.N.T.\, Anaesthesia\, Radiology\, Paediatrics\, and Pathology provided voluntary service at the camp. \nIncluding men\, women and children\, there were 406 people\, who availed surgical services; 215 for orthopedic care; 245 for ENT; 168 for gynecological treatment; 1078 for eye check ups; 493 for general health check up; 135 for dental care; and 52 for tuberculosis treatment. \nThe purpose of this health camp is to take healthcare services to the doorsteps of the most underprivileged population living in remote rural areas who are either out of reach from healthcare facilities or too poor to afford it. The health camp caters to the healthcare needs of about 20\,000 people living in about 100 villages in the vicinity of Shahpura. The area has only 1 government dispensary and in case of critical medical attention\, a patient is taken to Bhilwara for further treatment. Every year\, thousands people visit this health camp and over 1000 people avail the services. The health camp is a boon for the villagers who do not have access to proper healthcare service. \nThe entire Jain Samaj Women’s Wing\, Rajasthan in collaboration with Smile Foundation works months ahead of the programme making arrangements for the smooth execution of the camp. Besides the relentless service by the Women’s Wing\, the Government of Rajasthan also lends out its mobile surgical unit for the service of the people.

SUMMARY:Tata Teleservices employees train STeP students
DESCRIPTION:An Employee Engagement programme was organized at a STeP centre in New Delhi. The session was conducted by the CSR Manager of Tata Teleservices Ltd\, Mr. Jitendra where he explained the students about the benefits of using the internet in their day to day life. It was an interactive session in which the students cleared their queries regarding the usage of internet as well as accessing the web. \nOne of the best features of the session was that the students were explained ways of devising instrumental and attractive resumes. They were also explained the importance of having mailing ids and the way to create and access them. This whole session was planned to explain the use of internet in day to day life. \nTata Teleservices Limited has provided internet connection to 33 STeP centers across India. \nThis interactive session was both very enjoyable and informative and Mr. Jitendra concluded the session with an assurance that he along with his colleagues would come more regularly and guide the students that would help them get a better exposure to the professional world.

The children had a lot of fun interacting with the special guests of the show – Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra and the judges – Anu Malik and Farah Khan. \nThe kids also enjoyed watching the contestants performing their unique talented acts and cheered them with great enthusiasm. The participants also had a great time performing with such an encouraging audience. It was overall a fun filled day for everyone.
