SUMMARY:Fitness training to underprivileged adolescents
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation organised a career counselling session for young underprivileged girls from 10 urban slums of Delhi. Reebok’s Master Trainer Nisha Verma\, a well known name in the Fitness Industry gave a detailed presentation on ‘how to stay fit’\, and ‘fitness training’ as a career option. \nThe training programme was organised for 22 underprivileged girls covered under the Shinnyo-en scholarship programme. These girls hail from Swabhiman intervention areas of Smile Foundation. The girls aspire to become a dietician\, nutritionist or a fitness trainer. But due to lack of exposure they are unable to achieve their dreams. The programme was organised to give them a platform to understand the details of the job as a ‘fitness trainer’. \nNisha said\, “Shaping up and having a slimmer look is becoming a trend and more and more celebrities are flaunting their abs and muscles. Fitness is an emerging industry. Proper training and dedication is all that is required to avail the opportunity in the sector.” \nShe guided the students on their personal health and nutrition too. “Greasy and over-cooked food should be avoided and for a longer life\, one should have a regular exercising routine\,” she said. \nThe students thoroughly enjoyed the session and raised many queries regarding injuries and physical fitness. The event ended with prizes being given away to the winners of the painting competition ‘Beti Bhi Apni Hai’.

SUMMARY:Barclays Bank Employee Engagement Programme with STeP students'
DESCRIPTION:Smile Foundation is glad and privileged to conduct the Third Employee Engagement Programme with Barclays Bank. \nThe programme was conducted on 11 Dec.2009 at the Smile Twin e-Learning (STeP) centre in Noida. \nThe day focussed on diverse activities planned in a concrete manner with the objective of helping students learn to speak out confidently and come out their initial shyness which is very common when youngsters face the outside world or when they start working. All the activities combined fun with learning. \nThe programme began with a round of introduction between the beneficiaries and Barclays Bank Employees. Smile representative shared the reason for coming together. \nThe Extempore and Debate Competition was conducted with the goal of enabling students transform their ideas and creativity into words and present them in front of huge audience. The activities were held in groups to ensure participatory action by each candidate. Barclays Bank employees facilitated the groups and helped the students in understanding their topics and formulate them in English. \nThe next round Damsheraz focussed on helping students learn and recollect some daily advertisements they watch on T.V. The goal was to make them more aware on the market scenario and learn some of the big brand names. Barclays Bank employees enacted some of famous acts of T.V. and the students were able to smartly answer the same. \nThe pronunciation competition helped the students learn how to correctly pronounce some difficult words. The Employees from the Bank decided whether the student has correctly pronounced the word or not and helped the students in correcting them. \nThe programme ended with awarding the teams with different prizes. The prizes to be given were declared before the beginning of the programme to infuse encouragement among the beneficiaries and keep up their morale. Titles for Best Presentable Girl and Best Presentable Boy were also given. The employees happily presented the awards and the room filled with cheering sounds from different teams. \nUndoubtedly\, the students walked out refreshed and more confident at the end of the session. The counselling session certainly helped in coming out of their dilemmas related wit their careers. \nWe extend our sincere thanks to Barclays Bank for taking out time from their busy schedules and contribute towards the societal causes. We appreciate their sensitivity towards our cause and being able to out rightly counsel our students and able to show them the right path.

SUMMARY:'Smile on Wheels' drives to Ranchi: Underprevileged communities to benefit from the mobile health care services
DESCRIPTION:March 12\, 2010\, Ranchi: Smile Foundation\, a national level development organisation launched its mobile hospital ‘‘Smile on Wheels’’ on 12th March\, 2010 at Gymkhana Club in Ranchi\, Jharkhand. ‘Smile on Wheels’ will operate in collaboration with Krishi Gram Vikas Kendra(KGVK)\, a non-governmental voluntary organisation engaged in promoting socio-economic development in the state of Jharkhand. \nMarch 12\, 2010\, Ranchi: Smile Foundation\, a national level development organisation launched its mobile hospital ‘‘Smile on Wheels’’ on 12th March\, 2010 at Gymkhana Club in Ranchi\, Jharkhand. ‘Smile on Wheels’ will operate in collaboration with Krishi Gram Vikas Kendra(KGVK)\, a non-governmental voluntary organisation engaged in promoting socio-economic development in the state of Jharkhand. \nIn its initial phase of operations in Ranchi\, the mobile health care unit by Smile Foundation aims to target approximately one lakh (1 lakh) population in urban and rural slums. ‘Smile on Wheels’ comes to Ranchi after a successful and continued operation in six other states in India. ‘‘Smile on Wheels’’ is currently operational in Delhi\, Uttar Pradesh\, Tamil Nadu\, Andhra Pradesh\, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The programme has successfully covered five lakh eighty two thousand six hundred and sixty seven (582\,667) underprivileged people across the country and has benefited two lakh fifty thousand (250\,000) needy people in 108 slums and villages. \nTalking on the occasion\, Mr. Harish Nandan Sahay\, Director Operations at Smile Foundation said ‘Smile on Wheels’ is a national level mobile hospital programme of Smile Foundation which aims to provide primary health care services to reach the underprivileged population at rural areas and urban slums of Ranchi. There is a special effort to provide need based health care facilities to children and women.” \nThe survey and area research done by Smile Foundation suggests that there is a lack of basic healthcare services in the rural areas of Ranchi. The major communicable diseases prevalent in the target areas of Ranchi are Malaria\, Respiratory tract diseases\, Diarrhea. Leprosy\, Tuberculosis\, Skin infections\, Worm infestations\, Malnutrition and Anaemia. Inadequate ante natal and post natal care has also lead to high infant mortality rate in the city. \nExplaining the areas of concerns further\, Pabitra Banerjee\, General Manager\, Programme\, Smile Foundation said ”In many of the rural and urban slums of Ranchi\, a major chunk of the population is deprived of the basic health care services due to non accessibility and affordability of good and need based health care in and around their homes. ‘‘Smile on Wheels’’ is a concerted effort to walk to the doorsteps of the underprivileged people and provide them basic preventive and curative services.” Smile Foundationa and KGVK has initially identified areas like Jargapaka\, Piska\, Chandav\, Sikitiri\, Anandpur where there is an immediate need of quality health care services to improve the standard of life in these places.” \nAnalysing the need of mobile hospital services\, Dr. Jayanta Mitra\, Secretary\, KGVK said \n” This unique model of mobile hospital is meant for people living in the margins of the society. There is an effort to reach out to the economically and socially excluded population and provide accessible and affordable health care services at their doorsteps”. \nSmile on Wheels’ is well equipped with all the basic facilities which are necessary for a mobile health care unit to be operational .The vehicle is equipped with all the modern health care related machines required in a hospital for diagnosis of diseases\, testing and treatment. The mobile hospital will have a competent team of doctors and \npara-medical staff to look into the specific health care needs of each patient.‘Smile on Wheels’ in Ranchi will provide OPD-curative services for common ailments\, ante and postnatal services\, \nSmile Foundation has been awarded ‘NGO of the Year’ by GE Healthcare – Modern Medicare Excellence Award for innovative contribution that ‘Smile on Wheels’ has made towards healthcare services for the poor and needy.
