SUMMARY:Awareness & Safety Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Genesis \nWomen have landed on the Moon\, walked in space\, been elected as Heads of States\, they have proved themselves equal to men in every way\, Yet they are not safe in their own immediate surroundings. \nAggression and assault is a women’s reality\, crime against women is a daily occurrence\, age\, class\, qualification hold no significance. These attacks are all abuses of power\, where the attacker (mostly males) uses the act of violence to dominate and demonstrate power over the attackees. \nThe sad reality is that we live in an increasingly violent society in which the fear of crime is ever present. Personal safety has become an issue of importance for everyone\, especially women. To survive woman need to fight back. \nThe first step towards effective self-defense is to realise no matter what\, all of us are susceptible to various forms of crime . And it is well documented that women of all ages have successfully defended themselves against male attackers. \nEve teasing\, sexual harassment\, molestation\, domestic\, violence etc. no matter what the statistics are\, if you are being harassed or assaulted it will be 100%. \nPROJECT \nThe situation needs to be addressed and taking a step forward Smile foundation is organising a series of workshop on “Basics of self defense” for adolescent girls and women as part of its Safety & Awareness Campaign. \nIn the first phase 5 workshops were organised in communities of Safdarjung Enclave\, Okhla\, Nangloi\, Mahipalpur and Lado Sarai with a total participation of over 500. \nThese sessions were conducted by experts from the Women cell of Delhi Police. And were in the form of lectures coupled with discussion and demonstration of a few basic self-defense techniques. \nThe objective of the workshops were be to make the participants aware of different situations and how to deal with them. Also covered were the topics of “Myths about women\, violence and self-defense”\, body language”\, “how to use everyday items as weapons and basics about the redressal procedures and how to approach the police. \nIn essence the workshops were a wake up call to the participants that: \n‘Never\, never think that it couldn’t happen to you!’ Have a plan! Act Hard! Be prepared! \nWomen have a right to their space. \nWomen have a right to their freedom and autonomy… and must defend these rights. \nThe workshops highlighted the fact that it was absolutely essential that women/girls raise their voice against any misconduct and get the perpetrators to justice as it will not only teach the perpetrators a lesson but also act as a deterrent against them repeating the offense. The idea that one will be able to pick out a potential attacker by their appearance\, age\, class\, relation\, gender\, and what they do for a living is a mistake. The message loud and clear was Gone are the days when girls were required to lower their gaze\, walk straight and speak softly\, the mantra for today is look up\, be alert about what’s happening around you and speak up against injustice. \nThe response to the workshops has been overwhelming and repeat/new workshops will be held in the old and new communities. The target is to cover at least 1200 girls/women through the basic workshops and 200 girls/women through the 15 day Self Defense Training by December 2003. The 15 day Self Defense Training for above 5 communities will be held in the months of August to October.

SUMMARY:Workshop For teachers of Non Formal Education Centers
DESCRIPTION:SMILE Foundation\, organised a one day workshop on 30th August 2003 for 35 school teachers of 12 NGOs (Prayatn\, Vidya\, Sankalp\, Nai Disha\, NDS\, Nav Sristhi\, SMK trust\, Anurag Society\, Adhaar\, Ambedkar School\, Sai Kripa\, Sahyogita) The workshop was the third of a series of workshops organised by Smile as part of Quality Education Program. \nThe workshop specifically focused on improving the class room interaction between students and teachers. The atmosphere a teacher creates in his/her classroom has a drastic effect on whether or not students will be receptive. When students know that teachers care for them and believe in them\, the response is much better than when they do not receive positive affirmations. Teachers need to understand the impact and influence they have on their student’s lives\, especially if the influence at home is not as positive. \nMajority of the children coming to Non Formal Educational centers are first generation school goers who have little or no support from their parents\, whose comprehension of the significant changes education can bring to their wards life is limited. Thus in the absence of any motivation from their parents side\, the onus is entirely on the teachers shoulders to educate the children and retain them in the school system. This presents a daunting task to the teachers to enlighten\, educate and inspire these children. Making it of critical importance that they be provided with adequate skills to fulfill their roles adequately. It has been observed that a positive nurturing environment in school results in regular attendance\, discipline and reduced drop out rate. \nDuring the workshop the teachers were put through multiple exercises including one on self esteem and Self Image. Exploring these concepts at a personal level enabled the teachers not only to understand about themselves\, but also how to transfer their learning and experiences to improve their class room interactions with the children. \nThe workshop was anchored by Mrs. Jaya Mishra an HRD professional with over 10 yrs of experience from the Corporate Sector along with Ms. Priyanka Jain. \nSays Mrs. Jaya “Teachers are not aware of the impact their actions and words have on the children’s psyche.” During the workshop many participants admitted using words with negative connotations while interacting with the children. Most of the participants also complained of an inability to control their tempers while teaching and often felt frustrated. Very often individuals shift their locus of control from internal to external\, where they start holding others responsible for their thoughts\, attitude and actions”. This was observed during the session as several participants began talking about their families\, the constraints of society and so on for not being able to be as ‘positive’ or as ‘effective’ as they could and should have been\, in their jobs. Initially\, they voiced concerns about themselves and the environment that they lived in. But as the workshop progressed “the participants were able to identify the links between their perceptions about themselves\, their environment and their role as ‘teachers’. \nAll participants came out feeling significantly more positive\, confident and enlightened about their roles as teachers and as individuals. They charted out their action plans with a promise to improve their environment and all their interactions. A revived sense of responsibility towards the children they were teaching also surfaced post session.
