Dear readers and supporters,
As extensive studies on the 2011 Census Data have started coming out, one fact predominantly stands out with all its grave consequences. It is the continuing decline in Child Sex Ratio, which has touched the lowest since Independence – 914 girl children per thousand boys. Child Sex Ratio not only determines the gender balance of a society, but also predicts trends in various verticals of development – education, awareness, health and livelihood.
India not only ranks poorly when compared to developed countries in terms of Child Sex Ratio, but is also much below the mark among the developing countries. The Cover Story addresses this critical issue and tries to explore the reasons behind this consistent decline in Child Sex Ratio.
Smile Foundation follows a lifecycle approach of development, beginning with the education of children, including their families and the larger community by intervening through intensive programmes based on healthcare, livelihood and empowerment. Taking a very successful case study of an Integrated Education and Health Programme being implemented in Guna, Madhya Pradesh, ‘In Focus’ highlights this approach.
The festive season brought with it many new colours, and we have had an eventful period of various activities and initiatives. We received immense support and encouragement from all segments of society including eminent personalities, change makers, corporate, mass media and government, for which we are grateful.
We hope you’ll find these stories of change at the grassroots inspiring and we welcome you to join us in this journey which continues to unfold, even as you read these pages.
Warm Regards
