A school health camp was organised for children of Navrattan Gyanpeeth School, situated on the outskirts of NOIDA. Over 60 children went through medical check-ups. Free of cost medicines were provided for each identified case, along with instructions of usage to teachers and parents. School Health Camps are a regular feature of the Smile on Wheels Mobile Hospital project in NOIDA, which takes preventive, curative and promotive healthcare services to 20 slums in and around the city.
Children from Smile Foundation's Mission Education centre BTS, at Baikunthapur village in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, were in for a surprise when their teachers organised a nature learning class for them. The visit was enthusiastically undertaken by all children where they got demonstrations on different trees, herbs and medicinal plants. After the class the children drew some art work on the theme of nature and collected more information on the subject to enhance their creativity.
A total of 12 career counselling sessions were conducted in STeP centres of Mumbai and Bengaluru during the quarter. Experts from reputed companies facilitated the sessions wherein they interacted with the youth on personality development, soft skills and their career. Sessions were also taken on confidence building, facing interviews, decision making and taking up jobs in their field of interest. The sessions helped in motivating these students to go forth with different livelihood choices.
Week-long awareness sessions were organised across India during the World Immunization Week under Smile on Wheels programme. Communities were sensitised on vaccine-preventable diseases, and how immunization can protect them against 25 different infectious agents or diseases, from infancy to old age, including diphtheria, measles, pertussis, polio and tetanus. The awareness sessions were successful as people turned out in majority and their queries were all answered well by the medical teams.
“Say No to Child Labour, Say Yes to School” campaign was held in Wardha, Maharashtra. Children from the slum clusters in Nalwadi participated enthusiastically in this campaign along with volunteers from Smile Foundation. The children held flash cards with various slogans related to Anti Child Labour. Mr Sandeep Singh Thakur from Pratham Education Foundation and Mr Sengare who is a Professor in Wardha Engineering College also joined in the campaign to support the cause.
A workshop on control of Tuberculosis was organized for volunteers and PRIs in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. The health department of Bilaspur, International Union against TB and Lung Disease and World Health Organization supported the workshop. During the event, the participants learned about TB, including its symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and difficulties in accessing care, as well as current challenges in fighting TB.
70 Swabhiman scholars were taken for an exposure visit to the office and working premises of IBN 7 Network 18. The girls were taken around and educated about the day to day functioning of the news room, shoots in studios etc. Managing Editor Prabal Pratap conducted a Q&A session with the girls answering various queries about the procedure to read the news, fluency of language etc. The girls were thrilled with the experience and participated enthusiastically throughout the session.
Hand-washing is one of the most basic ways to maintain hygiene. A team of Swabhiman volunteers reached St. Soldier Public School in New Delhi to conduct a hand-washing workshop and also to address other issues regarding health and hygiene. The children were informed about the importance of proper hand washing and were taught steps to do the same. Visual media was used to aid the process of information exchange.
A total of 18 industry exposure visits were conducted for STeP trainees in Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad. The visits were focused on making the youth familiar with the everyday work processes of the companies. They were also introduced to the various career opportunities they can explore in the respective sectors. Offices and outlets of McDonald's, Star Bazaar, Reliance Trendz and Westside were few of the workplaces visited by the youth.
A special health camp was organised for women in the slums of Bengaluru under Swabhiman programme. The benefits provided in the camps consisted of full medical care which included OPD, supply of drugs, dressings, pathological and radiological investigations (diabetic, hemoglobin, ECG, Nebulization, urine and blood check up), antenatal and postnatal services. Special care and emergency treatment was provided for the critical cases.
Children from Mission Education centres across India celebrated Earth Day. Various events, including plantation drives, drawing competition, dance and rallies, were held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. In some centres, special plays were organised to sensitise the children on the subject. In Delhi, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai, volunteers and supporters also joined the children in the celebrations.
Smile Foundation joined hands with Deutshe Bank to launch five Smile on Wheels mobile hospital projects in Ludhiana, Ahmedabad, Kalyan, Surat and Kolkata. The projects will make healthcare services accessible at the doorsteps of families living in 15-20 slum clusters in the cities. Powered with a team of qualified doctor, nurse, lab technician, pharmacist, driver and a group of volunteers, each project aims to benefit an average of 20,000 people directly every year.
A five-day residential capacity building programme, focused on mobilising support and reaising funds from local communities, was conducted for grassroots NGOs in Delhi. 27 representatives of 18 grassroots NGOs from nine states participated in the training. The training was part of “Change the Game”, a multinational e-learning initiative for CBOs and grassroots NGOs by the Dutch development agency Wilde Ganzen, which is being implemented by Smile Foundation in India.
A series of health camps, supported by TCPL, were conducted at Goa, Haridwar, Guwahati and Silvassa for daily wage labourers and their families. Free of cost services including health check-ups by medical officers, distribution of medicines and pathological tests were provided during the camps. Cold & cough, weakness, joint pain, fever, gastritis and constipation were the most common ailments. More than 1500 children and their families benefitted from these camps.
A workshop was held in Kurvey's New Model Public School, Nagpur on "Successful Parenting". The President, Vice President, Secretary of the Institute, Dr. Utpala Kane, Mr. Kane, Mr. Subhash Kubde graced the occasion apart from the Principal, Mrs. Devyani Palit. Around 100 parents participated in the workshop. It was an interactive and participatory workshop wherein the parents were involved in reflecting on the ways and means of successful parenting.
