CASE STUDY

Shashibala says, 'People don’t like me. They also don't let their children come near me. They all either laugh at me or give me hateful looks. If I try to go near them, they chase me away like a street dog. I don’t know why. Maybe I look horrible. Or maybe I am poor. But I have never done anything wrong to them. I don’t fight with anyone. My only fight is to arrange for food. I leave home early in the morning to collect trash from the nearby garbage dump. There are days when I am lucky and earn around Rs 30, which is sufficient to buy one time food. But sometimes destiny doesn’t favor me and I barely make around Rs 5. On those days, I prefer to sleep hungry than beg on the streets. Even if I have to beg – I will beg for love, not money.'
Smile on Wheels supported by SBI Card feels privileged to have met Shashibala during the free doorstep healthcare visit in one of the slum clusters of Chennai. The SoW doctor is at present treating her for chronic knee-pain and low blood pressure.
