About Shikhar Yuva Manch

Shikhar Yuva Manch (SYM) was started by a team of young and devoted volunteers in 1997 having varied experiences in social work. SYM works for the development and empowerment of the underprivileged and tribal people in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh.

SYM believes in people’s power and their sustainable development. SYM’s vision is to create an equal, equitable, self-reliant, progressive and non-violent society.

And their mission is to work for the most disadvantaged, victimised and marginalised poor. They also work for the promotion of human rights, conservation of natural resources and protection of our glorious heritage and culture.

Smile Foundation’s association with Shikhar Yuva Manch

Smile Foundation partnered with Shikhar Yuva Manch in the year 2009 to promote the education of children in the age group of 6 to 14. The children are Baiga primitive tribes, Scheduled Tribes and other economically weaker communities of Kabirdham district.

The Project

The project seeks to enhance the holistic development o rural tribal children in difficult circumstances and at risk. The children are provided education, life skills, art, craft and cultural development, health and nutritional care, awareness building on adolescent health care, hygienic behaviour, knowledge on preventive measures of diseases, recreational facilities, games etc.

SYM in collaboration with Smile Foundation has opened 3 centres providing non- formal education to around 100 children of nearby tribal areas. One centre is exclusively dedicated for the girl children.

Smile Foundation will be supporting SYM with the critical cost of the project such as salaries of the teachers, study materials, nutrition and healthcare etc. To drive more and more children to the school and stop drop our rates, the children towards are provided mid-day meal.

The objective

To provide rural tribal children primary education, study materials, healthcare, hygienic and nutritional support, life skill education, art, craft, games, recreational facilities etc. The children are mainstreamed into public schools for further education.
