Empowering the underprivileged of East Delhi through Education

The Mission Education project focuses on providing education to the underprivileged children of Hathi Basti in East Delhi on the banks of the river Yamuna. Besides providing education, the project intends to curb malnutrition, provide medical facilities and also make the children aware about personal hygiene.

Education has taken a backseat since daily survival is of utmost priority here. With little access to public transport, going to school is a far-fetched idea for these kids. Most of the inhabitants of Hathi Basti are farmers or labourers with very little income to spare, making sending their kids even to a government school a difficult affair.

Today, there are more than 240 children at the centre who haven’t ever been to a school before. From giving a foundation course of LKG to toddlers to providing remedial classes to seniors, the centre offers an all-inclusive educational curriculum. On a daily basis, classes of four hours are held in two shifts – morning and afternoon are held at the centre.

Smile Foundation has partnered with Samarpan Foundation for this Mission Education project.
