Empowering the poorest of the poor with Education
This Mission Education project caters to the basic education and healthcare needs of children at Peenya in Karnataka. The industrial belt of Peenya, situated on the Bangalore-Mangalore highway, houses the factories of many well-known companies apart from small scale industries and workshops.
The issue of child labour and school drop outs is largely rampant in the nearby settlement colonies due to the poor financial condition of the families. Most of the men and women work as wage labourers and would either leave their children at home to take care of household chores or take them along to their workplace for doing odd jobs and earning some extra money. Education and healthcare was never a priority.
Realizing the vulnerability and specific needs of the children in the community, the centre nurtures them, providing these children with a shelter where they get educational as well as nutritional support.
Regular classes and counseling sessions are held for the drop-outs and children forced into child labour, with the objective of bringing them to the mainstream education system. Awareness meetings are also conducted with the parents to sensitize them to the importance of education.
Smile Foundation has partnered with Dani Development and Social Action for this project.
