For instance, in nearly 75% of countries, girls can still be legally forced into marriage, and 44% of countries have no equal-pay requirement<a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/governance\/women-globally-hold-just-64-of-the-legal-rights-of-men-un#:~:text=The%20report%20highlights%20significant%20legal,for%20work%20of%20equal%20value\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">[2]<\/a>. These legal shortfalls translate into lost opportunities: girls drop out of school and women stay out of the formal workforce. In India alone, 12.3% of secondary-school girls drop out, often due to early marriage or household pressures<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smilefoundationindia.org\/blog\/scholarships-for-girls\/#:~:text=The%20latest%20Unified%20District%20Information,many%20never%20reach%20college%20gates\">[3]<\/a>. Smile Foundation combats this through scholarships and mentorship. For example, its <strong>Scholarships@Smile<\/strong> programme has supported over 100,000 students (mainly girls) nationwide with financial aid, life-skills workshops and mentoring<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smilefoundationindia.org\/blog\/scholarships-for-girls\/#:~:text=Beyond%20tuition%3A%20A%20new%20grammar,of%20opportunity\">[4]<\/a>. By covering fees and school supplies, Smile keeps girls learning instead of dropping out. These efforts ensure that girls can finish school, and even pursue STEM studies, despite the legal and cultural barriers around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-entrepreneurship-and-skills-training\"><strong>Entrepreneurship and Skills Training<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When formal laws leave gaps (for example, <strong>no guaranteed equal pay<\/strong> in many countries<a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/governance\/women-globally-hold-just-64-of-the-legal-rights-of-men-un#:~:text=law%20may%20not%20recognise%20certain,for%20work%20of%20equal%20value\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">[10]<\/a>), many women end up in informal, low-paid work. In India over 90% of women-owned enterprises are informal<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smilefoundationindia.org\/blog\/female-entrepreneurs-in-india\/#:~:text=Informality%20and%20Its%20Consequences\">[11]<\/a>, meaning no formal contracts or protections. Smile Foundation\u2019s Women\u2019s Economic Empowerment programmes step in here. Through structured training, women learn business planning, financial literacy, marketing and digital skills<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smilefoundationindia.org\/csr\/partner-for-economic-empowerment#:~:text=Our%20programme%20is%20designed%20to,up%20and%20market%20scaling\">[12]<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smilefoundationindia.org\/csr\/partner-for-economic-empowerment#:~:text=Seed%20Capital%20and%20Market%20Linkages\">[13]<\/a>.
