Promoting healthy development for victims of child labour
This project aims to improve the condition of the children living in hazardous conditions in Howrah district in West Bengal, a highly flood prone area. Most people from the community are involved in agriculture and small industrial works.
The children too get involved in small-time jobs in the jari and cracker industries which can be hazardous to their lives. Drop-outs are common as having the maximum possible earning hands is a priority for families which are struggling for daily survival. As a result, the children had been getting deprived of their basic rights.
The primary objectives of the project are to provide educational support to the children who are mainstreamed into proper schools and retain them from their engagement in jobs (hazardous/non-hazardous). Through this the centre aims at strengthening and empowering the children and further training them as change agents to work towards development of the whole community.
Smile Foundation has partnered with Bagnan Human Rural Development Society for this project.
