Puppet show to spread awareness on HIV/AIDS

Underprivileged adlosecent girls from urban slums of Delhi sensitised more than 1000 DMRC employees about HIV/AIDS

HIV AIDSSmile Foundation in association with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) organised a HIV/AIDS awareness programme in 4 DMRC construction sites on World AIDS Day December 1, 2009. Through a puppet show, underprivileged adolsecent girls sensitised metro workers about the mesaures to prevent spread of HIV/AIDS. 

More than 1000 labourers and contractual workers were sensitised about HIV/AIDS at 4 different construction sites of DMRC namely New Delhi, Talkatora, Shivaji Stadium and Shastri Park.

The Delhi Metro Railway Corporation invited Smile Foundation community leaders, all girls, to create awareness among the construction workers about HIV/AIDS. Through a puppet show, community leaders from “Swabhiman”, the girl child and women empowerment programme of Smile Foundation created awareness among the labourers. The play showed how the lifestyle of a migrant labourer is more prone to infections like HIV/AIDS.

The DMRC employees not only watched, but also appreciated the shows. They raised many queries on HIV/AIDS which was rightly addressed by Smile Foundation representatives. Pamphlets creating awareness on HIV/AIDS were distributed among the DMRC employees. “It was a very informative programme. I appreciate Swabhiman’s effort in spreading awareness amongst the working class. The puppet show was very innovative and good,” said a DMRC Safety Engineer.
