"There
is a night-and-day difference women having training and exposure
as in Swabhiman and those not having this. In crisis, they
are the best people to come out as winners. Low skilled, family
pressure and not having financial authority at home often
results in low self-esteem for women."
Dr. Kiran Bedi, Social
activist and a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer

"It
feels great to be associated with such an initiative. Women
have always been placed highly in our society. We just need
to revive it again, involving all members of society."

"I
am very happy with the act of awareness and empowerment showed
by the community girls and appreciated their acts and Swabhiman's
efforts in making them confident and aware of their rights.
I am disheartened that at one hand girls are carving a niche
for themselves and on the other hand they are fighting against
molestation, humiliation and deprivation in their lives every
day in the society. We all have to come forward to make a
well-cultured and civilized society."
Mr. Farooque
Sheikh, Social activist and Bollywood actor

"Women
have to first respect themselves and then only the world will
respect them. Whatever she faces she need make a revolt but
should confidently face the challenges and come out a winner
in life. Never surrender in front of the problems and always
fight back."
Ms. Nadira
Babbar, Social activist and theater artist

“Coming
to Smile was a marvelous experience especially, while addressing
a bunch of young girl child beneficiaries from slums and the
benefit for same was very enthusiastically seen in them. The
queries and knowledge provided to the less privileged girls
on “Fitness as a career option” brought smile
on my face too.”

Population
Foundation of India (PFI) has an association of two years
with Smile Foundation as the implementing partner for the
project ‘Swabhiman’. The project is being implemented
in four slum pockets of East and South Delhi. Swabhiman is
an Urban Reproductive and Child Health and Development Project
with an empowerment approach. The project aims at empowering
adolescent girls from low socio-economic strata in the slum
pockets against the evil practices in the society. After two
years of its inception, a positive change is evident from
the fact that the empowered Swabhiman volunteers, all adolescent
girls, now publicly speak out against wrong practices in the
society. The family planning methods are now being accepted
well and the health seeking behavior has improved in the community.
I appreciate the efforts put in by Smile Foundation in the
project and highly value our partnership.
Mr. A R NANDA,
Executive Director, PFI
