Smile Foundation
The eventful Seven Years; and Ahead . .

SMILE is seven.

Smile Foundation was born quite accidentally at a reunion meeting of a team of young and successful corporate professionals in 2001. Many of them hailing from modest economic background, living proof of what quality education can help achieve and transform life in a single generation.

On February 21, the next year, Smile Foundation began its journey.

Education became SMILE’s main mission. Because, whether you are addressing healthcare, poverty, population control, unemployment or human rights, there's no better place to start than in the corridors of Education.

Educated youth is the cornerstone of any working democracy; more so if it is a young and vibrant country like India. Education is again the main tool that empowers individuals to help make informed choice, resist oppression and fight for their rights.

SMILE has therefore been committed to providing deprived children with basic education so that their future is built on a strong foundation; enabling them to free themselves from the vicious cycle of ignorance, poverty and disease.

In order to achieve the above-mentioned aspiration, SMILE needed a matching working model.

SMILE introduced an innovative working model probably for the first time in the development sector and named it ‘Social Venture Philanthropy’ (SVP). The model is inspired from a successful business concept widely known as ‘Venture Capitalism.’

Since then, SMILE has been concentrating on nurturing genuine grassroots initiatives across India with an objective of achieving accountability, scalability, sustainability and leadership. Clichéd, nevertheless, since the existence of the development sector, but rarely seen actually on the ground, till then.

In course of its journey so far, SMILE has come across numerous genuine grassroots NGOs, futuristic corporate, forward looking bureaucrats, no-fuss celebrities, encouraging journos, determined social entrepreneurs and aspiring children who have always believed in the aspiration named Smile Foundation.

SMILE thanks them all for their trust.

SMILE also salutes those unsung heroes who sincerely believe that they are keys for making the difference that India badly needs. In fact, we at SMILE draw inspiration from them.

Keep Smiling!
