Slum Children in Alwar Rajasthan

Tagore Shikshan Sansthan, Alwar (Rajasthan) has been a successful partner of Smile Foundation, having taken up the crusade of spreading quality education among the needy children of Rajasthan. The continuing ‘Remedial Education Project’ is being upgraded this year with renewed objectives.

The Project

The ‘Remedial Education Project’ is located in Jodia village in Alwar district of Rajasthan. The upgraded project will now cover 75 children, between the age group of 4 and 14, from the weaker section of the society. The children get education between class III and X.

Five dedicated teachers have been engaged in the education centre, who have undergone training under Smile Foundation’s ‘Quality Education Programme’. The special training programme include numerous modules and methodologies on how to make teaching as well as learning subjects like Mathematics, Science and English easier and effective.

The school, named ‘Tagore Model School’, run by the non-profit organization has been recognized by Department of Education, Government of Rajasthan since 1990. Regular examinations are conducted and the result sheets are forwarded to the Inspector of Schools.

The school campus had once an open (unmanned) post office where teachers as well as students can purchase postal items and deposit the amount in a packet on their own. Besides, it had got an unmanned stationery store where students could buy items at reasonable rates and again deposit the money on their own.

Mr. Bhagwat Prasad Sharma, former teacher with the state government and the crusader behind the organization, has been recognized several times for his contribution in value-based teachings. Mr. Sharma, won District Award for the Best Teacher twice in his teaching career. Subsequently he was conferred with the State Award from the Governor of Rajasthan and later on the National Award by the President of India.

Now the school has four salaried and trained teachers, besides Mr. Sharma, which not only provides value-added education but also moral science and life education.

Tagore Shikshan Sansthan

Tagore Shikshan Sansthan, is a registered non-governmental organization, coming in to being as a result of a retired but untiring teacher (Shri Bhagwat Prasad Sharma). He was been deeply anguished by all-round decline in values, level of commitment among teachers and students alike and also enabling environment, leading to distressing decline in quality of teaching, in general. However, he had successfully been teaching in a government middle school as a principal during his working days with the government. Then also he practiced innovative methods to inculcate good values among students and teachers alike, besides creating new academic facilities like setting up a library and a scientific laboratory.

Mr. Sharma, after retirement from his teaching job, remained untired. He opened a primary school in year 1989 in his village Jodia in Alwar District of Rajasthan and naming it “Tagore Model School” under the auspices of Tagore Shikshan Sansthan- the organization he subsequently got registered the same year as an NGO.

The school, initially starting with a few children, is run from his residence-cum-mandir complex in a covered Verandah (corridor). The school got recognition from Department of Education, Government of Rajasthan in the year 1990-1991.

Initially, with the help of a salaried teacher, besides Mr. Sharma himself, children are taught Hindi, English, Mathematics, Social Studies and General & Moral Science. Result sheets from each periodic examination used to be sent to the Inspector of Schools.

Tagore Shikshan Sansthan has been supported by Smile Foundation for running its Remedial Education Project providing special attention and education to needy children who are enrolled in government schools of Jodia village but are found weak in study or slow in learning.
