Smile’s
Sixth Annual Multi-specialty Mega
Health Camp in Rural Rajasthan
The annual free Mega Health Camp
was organized by Smile Foundation in Bhilwara
district of Rajasthan between 21 to 27 of September
2007. The venue was at Badnaur of Bilwara district.
The Women’s Wing of Jain
Samaj, Bhilwara, was co-organiser of the free
medical camp continued for 10 days. This camp
is sixth the in the series. During the previously
occasions the total beneficiaries are around 18,
000.
Local MLA Mr. Vijendra Singh
inaugurated the initiative this year.
A 500 bedded temporary hospital
was set up at the venue during the camp. More
than 100 women volunteers from the Women’s
Wing of Jain Samaj of Bilwara, mostly homemakers
or house wives, were actively participated and
played important role in organizing the same.
Dr. Katara, Director of Mobile
Surgical Medical Unit, Govt. of Rajasthan and
Dr. Sadasukhi, Nerologist conducted the surgical
operations on the patients. Twenty doctors were
from the Rajshthan Mobile Surgical Medical Unit
out of total 28 doctors who attended the health
camp. In Rajkiya Kanaya Uchh Madhyamic Vidyalaya,
critical operations were performed.
Specialists and doctors in Surgery,
Ophthalmology, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Medicine,
E.N.T., Anesthesia, Radiology, Pediatrics, and
Pathology attended to patents. Similar to each
year health camp 2007 was attended by rural poor
people who were either cut off from health care
or it was beyond their affordability.
For the initial two days (21st
Sept. and 22nd Sept. 2007), patients were examined
in OPD followed by operations (23rd Sept. and
24th Sept.) and post-operative care during the
last three days. Most of the patients had come
from far off villages for receiving free treatment
from experts.
More than 5000 villagers from
over 50 villages benefited from the 2007 camp.
The Government of Rajasthan has
also been a crucial partner in the camp which
provided specialized medical expertise through
a Mobile Surgical Unit, which is also the largest
mobile surgical unit in Asia. A staff of 120 doctors
and paramedical staff were pressed into the service
during the ten day long camp.
Smile Foundation donated a Sonography
machine of Rs. 450000 to the Mobile Surgical Medical
Unit of Rajasthan Government which is also being
utilized for poor outreach patients across the
state of Rajasthan outside this camp.
The health camp brings free and
specialized health care especially for the underprivileged
population to their doorstep every year. Women,
who cannot leave their houses for many reasons,
avail the medical facilities in their neighborhood
for free and without any hassle.
Smile Foundation has been organizing
this health camp in Bhilwara since year 2002.
