Smile’s Sixth Annual Multi-specialty Mega Health Camp in Rural Rajasthan

 

The annual free Mega Health Camp was organized by Smile Foundation in Bhilwara district of Rajasthan between 21 to 27 of September 2007. The venue was at Badnaur of Bilwara district.

The Women’s Wing of Jain Samaj, Bhilwara, was co-organiser of the free medical camp continued for 10 days. This camp is sixth the in the series. During the previously occasions the total beneficiaries are around 18, 000.

Local MLA Mr. Vijendra Singh inaugurated the initiative this year.

A 500 bedded temporary hospital was set up at the venue during the camp. More than 100 women volunteers from the Women’s Wing of Jain Samaj of Bilwara, mostly homemakers or house wives, were actively participated and played important role in organizing the same.

Dr. Katara, Director of Mobile Surgical Medical Unit, Govt. of Rajasthan and Dr. Sadasukhi, Nerologist conducted the surgical operations on the patients. Twenty doctors were from the Rajshthan Mobile Surgical Medical Unit out of total 28 doctors who attended the health camp. In Rajkiya Kanaya Uchh Madhyamic Vidyalaya, critical operations were performed.

Specialists and doctors in Surgery, Ophthalmology, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Medicine, E.N.T., Anesthesia, Radiology, Pediatrics, and Pathology attended to patents. Similar to each year health camp 2007 was attended by rural poor people who were either cut off from health care or it was beyond their affordability.

For the initial two days (21st Sept. and 22nd Sept. 2007), patients were examined in OPD followed by operations (23rd Sept. and 24th Sept.) and post-operative care during the last three days. Most of the patients had come from far off villages for receiving free treatment from experts.

More than 5000 villagers from over 50 villages benefited from the 2007 camp.

The Government of Rajasthan has also been a crucial partner in the camp which provided specialized medical expertise through a Mobile Surgical Unit, which is also the largest mobile surgical unit in Asia. A staff of 120 doctors and paramedical staff were pressed into the service during the ten day long camp.

Smile Foundation donated a Sonography machine of Rs. 450000 to the Mobile Surgical Medical Unit of Rajasthan Government which is also being utilized for poor outreach patients across the state of Rajasthan outside this camp.

The health camp brings free and specialized health care especially for the underprivileged population to their doorstep every year. Women, who cannot leave their houses for many reasons, avail the medical facilities in their neighborhood for free and without any hassle.

Smile Foundation has been organizing this health camp in Bhilwara since year 2002.
