Support to Physically Challenged Tsunami Victims

 

Context

Tsunami devastated the shorelines of different nations of South Asia during the month of December, 2004. India was one among those cursed nations. In India, the casualty has been in the coastal parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman Nicober Islands. The most immediate and urgent needs at the moment are those very basics for human survival, i.e., food and shelter. However other than these basic urgent needs of tragedy-stuck humanity, one that is no less crucial is to help physically disabled people having lost their aids and appliances to tsunami.

Smile Foundation, committed to improve the lot of the underprivileged sections of society, as an immediate intervention support had intended to provide physically handicapped people (Children & adult alike) with aids and appliances, which they lost due to tsunami.

The Project

The project is aiming to help physically handicapped people by means of providing aids and appliances, which they lost due to tsunami. For this purpose SMILE has tied up with Ajay Memorial Foundation (AMF), Chennai, which is a local NGO. The Aids and appliances will be distributed to the concerned persons as identified by the need assessment survey in the districts of Thiruvallur and Kanyakumari.

The Beneficiaries

The list of tsunami affected needy handicapped persons had been forwarded by the District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer to the AMF. 105 tsunami affected disabled people of Kanyakumari, Thiruvallur and Nagarkoil Districts are being benefited, as they would be provided the aids and appliances lost due to Tsunami. . Following aids and appliances will be provided as per necessity:

· Try cycles
· Wheel Chairs
· Bilateral PP Hip Knee Ankle foot orthosis with shoes, Child size
· Bilateral PP Knee Ankle foot orthosis with shoes, Adult size
· Bilateral PP Ankle foot orthosis with shoes, Adult size
· Crutches
· Above Elbow Prosthesis (Adult)
· Bilateral PTB Prosthesis (Adult)
· CTEV boots (Adult)
· Walker folding type adjustable
· Adjustable Trippad

Distribution of Aids and Appliances

The aids and appliances will be distributed to the needy people through local functions presided by the District Collectors at Kanyakumari and Thiruvallur.
