About the Partner

Institute of Psychological & Educational Research (IPER) is a non-profit voluntary organisation working since 1971 for the development of deprived children, their families and the community at large. It is situated in the South Kolkata region



About the Project: . Institute of Psychological & Educational Research (IPER) aims at ensuring equality in our society through development of the underprivileged. The aim is to work for wholesome upliftment and development of the children & women who are denied of the basic needs of education, sanitation and nutrition. The main focus is on girl child and also taking care of the basics of education and building self esteem.

Major components of The Programme

Child Education

IPER runs Primary and Upper Primary schools in the slums of South Kolkata.
Direct education to 1445 kids
There are 30 centres in total
There are 682 boys and 763 girls
There are 39 dedicated teachers, out of them 36 are graduates and 3 are higher secondary pass.
The drop out ratio observed in last few years is seen at approximately10% per year

Other Ongoing interventions:

Integrated programme for street children

This programme aims at Prevention of Destitution of the Children. It also aims to put them into the social mainstream. The major component of project includes education, nutrition, sanitation and hygiene, safe-drinking water, recreational facilities and protection against abuse and exploitation of these kids.

The project is meant for children within the age group of 4-14 years who are on streets with or without anybody to take care of them. Over the past one year IPER has reached out to 500 children through 16 centres spread over Kolkata.

Support services of street children

The project aims to provide basic support to children who have been deprived of educational assistance and nutritional needs. It also provides provision for clean drinking water and other basic amenities. The project also conducts special coaching classes, pre-vocational training to school drop outs and slow learners along with creative classes of art, craft, music, dance, drama etc. to tap the hidden talent of the children.

It is a scheme under the integrated programme for street children

The National Child Labour

This is an anti- child labour project, which is run by IPER in conformity with CRC and ILO objectives. The project at present operates in the 24 Pargana District administration and Kolkata district. It includes around 350 children under this project.

Prevention of Alcoholism and substance (Drug) abuse

This aims to provide service mainly in the form of counselling and self awareness. The services of the centre are run by IPER from two out-patient centres, one at Mahamaytala, Garia, under Kolkata and also Sonarpur, Baruipur, Bhangur and Bishnupur.

The project on psychological, somatic and social interventions
It is designed for the high-risk children of Kolkata. The main objective is to develop a replicable strategy to address the physical, social and psychological health problems of the underprivileged children. It also takes special care are to analysis the physical and psychological problems.
