For 16 year old Yogita, her mother Kiran is her biggest inspiration. Illiterate herself, Kiran has worked hard with her husband to make sure that all her three daughters get an education.

“I work as a maid – wash dishes, do cleaning and mopping in 5-6 houses every day. In the evening I pack these plastic balls, which my husband sells at traffic signals. Whether it is the burning sun, heavy rains or biting cold, we never take a single day off. Why? Just so that our daughters can have an easier life and do not have to struggle daily like us”, says Kiran.

It is as much a fruit of Kiran’s efforts, as her eldest daughter Yogita’s determination, that the latter has always excelled in school. Last year, Yogita was identified and recognized under Smile Foundation’s Swabhiman programme, and awarded with a merit-based scholarship to complete her education. It was a proud moment for Kiran, who hopes her younger daughters too follow in Yogita’s footsteps.

63.5% girls in India drop out of school after Class 5 – they are either confined to homes, forced into child marriage, put to work as maids, or worse. With education, they can discover their true potential just like Yogita.

Our women and girl child empowerment Swabhiman provides educational support to exceptionally talented girls through full scholarships to complete their schooling and higher education. In addition to this, the girls are provided exposure and opportunities for holistic development to help them succeed in all spheres of life.

Join in our efforts to help fulfill the young dreams of many deserving girl children.
