"A beggar, runaway, motherless and son of a drug addict father"
–this is what Romeo Mendonca was before he was brought to Smile Foundation's rehabilitation cum recreational centre in Mumbai.
He was found begging at a traffic signal. Fed up of being beaten up by his drug addicted father, motherless Romeo had run away from home when he was thirteen. He started begging at different Mumbai signals to avoid the beggar's mafia and would buy food with whatever he earned.
But today, he is an ambitious boy. He is a football and badminton champ, studies in class ten and is no less than a hero among his friends. Romeo has put his past life behind. He misses his father but knows he is better off here in the home. He wants to be pilot when he grows up and wishes to make his father clean of drug addiction so they can live together.
8 million children in India are still out of school. With your support, they can get a fresh start like Romeo.
Smile Foundation has initiated Mission: Happy Childhood, in association with SRCC Business Conclave and Flatle, to send underprivileged children to school.
