32-year-old Shabnam is an inhabitant of Gheja slum of Gautam Budh Nagar district in Noida. Around 1500 people live in the area with the major occupation as daily wage labors. The health and hygiene situation of the village is very bad as there is no proper sanitation facility available.

Razia lives in Begumpur village of Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Noida. The total population of the village is 3000 and the major occupation of the village is Rickshaw pulling. Literacy rate of the community is very low and health and hygiene among the people are also very low.

Pinky – 25 years old; mother of a two year old boy & two months old girl; wife of a rag-picker who merely passes as the breadwinner. They live in Churiya Slum at Tuglakabad in South Delhi. The Smile on Wheels team took notice of Pinky’s little girl one day when they found her crying hysterically. One of the team member’s went and asked Pinky the reason and she replied saying, “She is hungry I don’t have milk for her because I give it to my son”.

Manni Devi lives in Jagatpura Kacchi Basti, Jaipur. She and her husband work as daily casual labour. They have three children who go to a govt. school. Around 18,000 people live in this community and most of them have casual labour as their means of income. People in this community suffer a lot from viral fever, malaria and dengue and this is caused by the bad hygiene conditions in the area.

Kalawati, 48 years old, lives in Sansarpur basti ka talab area of Lucknow. The area homes a population of 20,000 people and has terrible hygiene conditions. Viral fever, dengue and malaria are common diseases that the people living in the area suffer.

“Moti Ram Mahto, is a 15 year old boy and lives with his family in Jagra Paika, a small village in the Angara district of Jharkhand. The area has a total population of over 1lac. Majority of the people work here as casual labourers, rickshaw pullers, small shopkeepers, etc. Diseases like malaria, diarrhoea, tuberculosis and asthma are very common in this area.

Md. Rafique Yusuf Kundiva, is an inhabitant of Haji Sattarni Chali Idgah in Ahmedabad. 5000 people live in this community which consists of 1500 migrant labour workers. The area has very unhygienic living conditions; heaps of dirt is found everywhere and water accumulation can be seen everywhere, as a result of which the area has a lot of mosquitoes; there is no provision of clean drinking water and there are common toilets which are very dirty and unhygienic. Majority of the people living in this community suffer from dysentery, malaria, skin diseases and arthritis.

Mantosh Mahto lives in Baridih, a village in the outskirts of Ranchi, Jharkhand. He supports a family of 3 which includes his wife, child and younger brother. The livelihood of the family is entirely dependent on agriculture, but Mantosh does not possess enough land to do well out of farming. He thus works as a rural insurance agent as well, and needs to travel to his clients every day in order to collect premiums.
