The Founders
A group of seven professionals from diverse backgrounds
joined hands in the year 1993 to work for the upliftment of underprivileged
communities both in rural and urban areas of Kolkata to create a healthy
society for the overall growth and development of individuals with equal
rights.

About the Organisation
Birmingham Vidyasagar Society for Social Service, a
registered non-governmental orgainisation was established in the year
1994 at Dumdum Cant, Kolkata. BVSS reaches out to the underprivileged
population including slum dwellers, pavement dwellers, rural & tribal
poor, destitute women and children to improve their socio- economic
condition through micro-finance, skill & vocational training and
facilitating basic education.
Association with Smile Foundation
Birmingham Vidyasagar Society for Social Service in
association with Smile Foundation is running Smile Twin e-Learning programme
that aims to provide professional educational skills to the underprivileged
communities thereby increasing the employability in the urban and rural
areas of Kolkata.
Other Activities at BVSS
Child Survival & Development
It includes welfare activities for some less fortunate children who
are living on streets and rural areas by providing education and healthcare
facilities.
Women Empowerment
This activity includes conducting training programmes for women on
issues related to legal rights and health concerns.
Health and environmental Sanitation
This activity includes educating the adolescents on their personal
health & hygiene and organising awareness camps on HIV/ AIDS.
Stories of Hope
1) Birpal Kaur
Birpal Kaur belongs to a socially and economically
backward family of Kolkata. Her father is a truck driver and is into
the habit of drinking alcohol. Birpal was in search of a job to support
her family financially. She was not able to find a good job due to lack
of computer knowledge .At this point of time, she joined the STeP Programme.
After completing the course, she got employment with Kochar BPO. Today
she is able to support her family financially and is looking forward
for a better tomorrow
2) Sk. Anowar Hossain
Being a polio patient, Sk.Anowar Hossain had to face
various challenges in his day to day life. But this did not stop him
from dreaming. The financial condition in his family is also very poor
.He got to know about the Smile Twin e-Learning programme through an
advertisement. He has joined the course. Inspite of all the odds, he
is trying to explore new employment opportunities to live financially
independent life.
