'Education – Our Path to Progress

Smile Foundation and AARAMBH have come together for a child education intervention in Navi Mumbai, Maharahtra. The project named ‘Education - Our Path to Progress’ aims to improve the quality of life of vulnerable children of socially exploited and economically deprived children.

 

About the Project

Underprivileged children, focusing on many girl children, from the slums near Belarpur Road and Turbhe Stores in Navi Mumbai are the target beneficiaries of ‘Education - Our Path to Progress’ initiative.

 

 

The following programmes are part of the initiative:

(a) Motivating parents to send their children to the learning centres

(b) To enroll out of school children into formal schools

(c) To provide educational sponsorships for children in need to enable them to study up to class X

(d) To promote healthy living among families through health awareness and health             camps

(e) To set up pre-school learning centres for toddlers and support classes for children with learning problems

About the Partner

AARAMBH, meaning ‘the beginning,’ was established in 1997 as a non-profit, voluntary organisation. AARAMBH has since been working to transform the lives of underprivileged population, particularly children, living in slums in and around Navi Mumbai. Today the organization caters to 1000 children, 400 women and 300 youth in the areas.

Some of the programmes being implemented by Aarambh are:

  • ·                     Balwadis (day care centre) for toddlers
  • ·                     Remedial Education for children who find difficulty in coping with studies
  • ·                     Health education classes and medical camps in the communities
  • ·                     Tailoring classes for women
  • ·                     Computer classes for youth

The organization strives to reach out to a sizeable population of children and women in its project area. AARAMBH has started ‘Education - Our Path to Progress’ in association with Smile Foundation, to target this uncovered population.

The initiative has well planned activities to accomplish its various objectives:

  • (1)   Enrolling the children aged 3 to 5 years in Balwadis (Nursery cum daycare) after convincing their parents to send them to school.
  • (2)   Conducting special support classes for children with learning problems who are also potential drop-outs.
  • (3)   Mainstreaming of children under non formal education to formal schools.
  • (4)   Conduction of minimum 2 health camps every year for children to keep a check on the condition of their health and also provide treatment for common ailments
  • (5)   Special health camps (minimum 2 every year) for women in the slums community on issues pertaining to family planning, reproductive health and general hygiene
  • (6)   Monthly health education sessions for women to cover health issues concerning their families and communities
