Long back, the Father of the Nation had envisioned of a nation where education for all children up to the age of 14 is free and compulsory. Six decades later, Mahatma Gandhi's vision is going to be a reality. The Education Bill has been cleared by the Lower House.

Nonetheless, this momentous legislation will serve as a much needed boost to Indian government's effort to universalise education. But mere legislation cannot ensure the success of the initiative.

Mobilising children to come to school and mainstreaming the less privileged children to be a part of the formal setup cannot be achieved by the government alone. Civil Society Organisations have a crucial and complementary role to play, for making this endeavour a reality.

Many corporate houses, NGOs, educational institutions, national and international organisations are already a part of the development initiatives devised for the holistic development of children, which includes their education and healthcare. The legislation has all the more increased their responsibility towards the disadvantaged mass.

Smile Foundation believes that every drop makes an ocean and every individual can 'be the change'. In order to sensitise more and more privileged mass about the plight of the underprivileged children, the Foundation is making a film Main Kalam Hoon, based on the aspiration of an underprivileged child.

Similarly, a campaign Chhone Do Aasmaan is being telecast on NDTV to motivate children to stand up, act and bring a change in the lives of the less privileged.
